(Case in point--"Leviathan" is a name that's been used in many things. If I remember correctly, it's Hebrew in origin. But you are right, there is a creature in the FF games named Leviathan, although I don't think it's the same as the one in Mario Fusion. I might be wrong, though.)

leviathan is the name of a sea monster, its not from a video game originally and that guy probubly name his book after it.

In this case, I believe the Leviathan is in fact from the sequel to Konami SHMUP Salamander(Lost Winds in North America), Salamander 2. Or, at least, the sprite is ripped from it.
