Amazing Modern Orchestral Music , indeed it should be put out in AT LEAST 7.1 , so much stuff is going on ...... almost to much for 2 speakers ..........
@Roadtoconsciousness Maybe a little bit too much sometimes. I hate to say it but, on this track I think the backing melody vocals @ 0:53 might be unnecessary imo. Or maybe it's just because I heard the pasty mcbalderton version first, where they are missing.... but I think that might have sounded better.
I love checking out these early "in studio" works, and then listening to the kickass final version. It's made me appreciate the work put into this so much more.
This shit's inspiring me to actually... y'know... put effort into making a good sounding recording(even if my shit's just demos)Holy shit is it going to be difficult... but worth it.
What keyboards do you use Dev? At 3:25 the "bell-kind-a" sound with arpeggio sounds like slightly edited version of sound from my Korg TR. Very lovely sound (if its even the same I don't know), I'm also using it on a very crushing ending of one dramatic song. Thanks for this video, I watched this after long time and remembered how greatly you produce! Please answer to the keyboard question ! :)
I can't understand shit, but MAN, the amount of STUFF in every song. I never even realized all this stuff was here, I just heard drums, vocals and guitar.
Wow this is absolutely great! I always try to make real ambient tunes (but fail misserably). This video has given me shitloads of inspiration! thanks!
Dev, you could make any song in the world sound absolutely insane! definitely one of the greatest producers in the world, as well as one of the greatest all-around musicians
This was already my favourite song on the album, but I just gained such an increased appreciation for the sheer depth of the production. This is amazing and enlightening.
Hey Dev I have made my chorus that way as well and I liked it but I think having 1 effect track underneath would have made it better for me like youve done.
My favorite song - and such a complicated thing. I heared by myself that it is full of sounds, but there's more than meets the... ear - I noticed many of samples just after this video. Thank you, Devin, good luck and more great music!
God what I would give to have a version of Supercrush! without the main guitar, and with the main vocals turned down a bit. There's so much gold in here that I've never even noticed, despite how much I adore this song. I <3 you Dev!
Coming from a long time fan of SYL, Ocean Machine, DTB, Phycisist, Ziltoid, Punky Bruster, your work with Vai, and now DTP; I love all your work. I always knew there was much behind your signature, but HOLY CRAP. I think I just pooped a little. I have a home studio and this really draws a helping picture for admirers such as myself! Thank you Dev for your genius music!! Not only is it aurally orgasmic but the lyrics really hit hard. The show in Atlanta was fantastic by the way, best yet!
If only the internet existed at the time of 'Infinity'. I'd just about lose a limb to see an examination of the layers of music Devin created on THAT record.
Because to me 'Infinity' is, without question, the greatest album of all time.
infinity is definately a brilliant album. i think addicted [sorta] picks up where infinity left off in terms of being slightly poppy, yet still heavy and very interesting. each of his albums are very special in their own way. love it. inspiring, influential, meditative, and very deep all around.
I want to see a video like this for Voices In The Fan! :D or Bastard, or Funeral :)
Devin, talking about going way above the call of duty, thank you SO FUCKING MUCH for putting up this video. for someone who obsesses about your mixes and the sheer complexity that sets your music apart, this is like the greatest thing to watch ever! no one understands why i go crazy about your music, so i end up making all my own music alone, im 18 and god dammit im frustrated. thx for existing Mr Townsend!
Hey Devin! I think that it would be great idea if you re-relase this album in 5.1 format! In a DVD audio perhaps! I think, too much stuff and tracks would sound great in surround sound!!
Don't know how you'd feel about this, but what about releasing multi-tracks for the remix community to play with, a la what NIN has been doing for a while?
Hi Devin. We are White Arms of Athena. We'd like to be in contact with you soon, not tomorrow or anything. But for the future, let's see if this works....
I'd love to hear the whole ADDICTED album with just 8 tracks per song. Just to see the difference between a clean 8 track album version and a 100+ track devin madness album! lol - If you're reading this dev (unlikely) wouldnt be too hard to make a quick 8 track version with just the main instruments/vocals.
Seriously Dev I never even noticed most of this stuff in the song but I have this feeling if they were taken out I'd probably be killing myself trying to figure out what is wrong.
is the recording process these days becoming too technological? how much of this song was actually recorded in the studio...dont get me wrong i love the album and this song but theres alot going on......id be lost
The technique is changing and it´s easier to record easy stuff. But lots of this stuff could´ve been made in an analogue studio as well since he uses mostly real recorded tracks with effects and while it´s made easier with computers, it was never impossible. We get alot more trash these days because of the availability of recording but the geniouses like Devin will always have an advantage over us normal folks... ;)
That was amazing!! Thanks so much for that Dev!! I always wondered how you created that "signature" sound of yours... I never would have guessed there were that many freakin tracks buried in the mix, lol!
I went into my local HMV (UK) today and ordered/bought Ziltoid (bonus DVD). I'll own the next album by next week. I can't wait to drive around town, blasting "Ziltoidia Attaxx" and singing along.
I learned so much watching this. If you read this Mr. Townsend, know that this kind of upload is greatly appreciated from us in the home studio world. GREATLY appreciated from a looooonnng time fan. What percussive delivery Annika has. A great vocal package.
Production wise it sounds like Wintersun with a butt load of different tracks that all come together and overwhelm the listener in a flurry of epicness.
Devin, thanks so much for posting this. Its really great to get an inside view of your recording process. I'm a huge fan of all your work, from SYL to your new project. I can't wait for Deconstruction!
Dev, This is such a gift to us who really appreciate your process. Thank you so much! The new Disc is incredible and so moving. See you when you get out on the road here!
hey thanks for posting this devin, did you record the keys in ableton then mix em down and import them in pt because all the keys seems like wave files instead of midi notes or did you just not use any vst keys?
I'd like to someday be able to use protools with this level of proficiency. I don't know where to start, or where this whole process starts but one day... one day...
This was really interesting Devin. I've always known you were a great producer, but this just totally blows my mind. All the background stuff really gives it more "color," so to speak.
Your work is truly inspirational. You're actually one of the main reasons I'm going into production. Thanks for posting this man, it was very insightful.
the part at 2:20 where you mention that 'a lot of the stuff you don't end up hearing' you do subliminally I think, all those different freq's and things, that's what I've always admired about your music, the knowledge you put out on the Hummer was immense, really opened my eyes.
as well as DevLab not just hummer..the first time i listened to devlab i was in ah but at the same almost freaked out ..... track five was a trip but was yet very powerful and greatly made
That's what I admire most about your music Dev, is your ability to layer a song to make it sound like God farting. I bet if you could make a damn good cake (layers always welcome). I can't wait to see you on the 12th of Jan and I also can't wait for Deconstruction. Keep up the good work man.
dev...what the fuck...how can one man possess so much genius? this album is insane and all the shit you've put in supercrush is just insane.... I CAN NOT FUCKING WAIT UNTIL BLOODSTOCK!!!
Thanks for this, Dev! I know absolutely nothing about Protools or Production, but I love this kind of "making of", "behind the scenes" stuff. Seeing how you bring these songs together is quite amazing. Now when I listen to that song, I can hear more hints of things you demonstrate here, so that just makes it all the more awesome to listen to.
yeah, but a lot of it is a sum of its parts. It's worth it from a production point of view I think. Some of these effects and layers are more of a subconscious/subliminal whole that really adds to that "what the fuck" feeling. If you could actually pick out every little thing you'd kinda ruin the experience I'd think.
Thank you so so SO much for this video, Dev. Being a Pro-Tools producer myself, I've always been curious as to how you achieve your distinctive sound in your incredible music. As both a fan an' fellow producer, it's a true joy to get a peak into your mind (an' into that bitchin' Pro-Tools rig. Fucking Christ, dude!).
Thats awesome. So inspiring. Makes me realize that in the studio, the song itself means nothing without the little things you add to it here and there. Its stuff that you don't necessarily notice when you're listening unless you're listening for it.
Makes a perfect wall of sound, which is something that makes Devin's music unique. Incredible stuff and a great album.
i just wonder how much time you spent to create each song... its nice to see your point of view in the song wrinting the, complexity of it and the attention to the small details that completely transforms your music. Keep making amazing music and keep making this kind of videos Dev :)
How the hell do you find the time to create ALL these individual tracks just layer everything?! absolutely insane!

The many layers of sound that make your anthems come to life... this is a great clip Sir Devy, thanks for uploading it
(ps this is my fave track off Addicted too...Bonus!!)

5:54 = Dance!? You could work with that Dev, remix into a devine dance track. Would kill all techno competition.

5:44 = holy interlude.
9:00 = holy ending. Glad you twisted that Dev compared to original, sounds like the ending to an epic cinematic.

Awesome stuff!

Is it possible to actually hear all the layers?

This has been flagged as spam show
yeah only if you do lsd and then listen
Passitivity 2 years ago
yeah, but a lot of it is a sum of its parts. It's worth it from a production point of view I think. Some of these effects and layers are more of a subconscious/subliminal whole that really adds to that "what the fuck" feeling. If you could actually pick out every little thing you'd kinda ruin the experience I'd think.

Amen to that

Yeah, i suppose you have a point

Thank you so so SO much for this video, Dev. Being a Pro-Tools producer myself, I've always been curious as to how you achieve your distinctive sound in your incredible music. As both a fan an' fellow producer, it's a true joy to get a peak into your mind (an' into that bitchin' Pro-Tools rig. Fucking Christ, dude!).
Thank you for this video!

Like everyone has said, it is quite a gift to be able to hear these layers exposed.
I can imagine some amazing electronic remixes coming out of this song.

Hope springs eternal.
