you were talking about the jazz chords, I think you should use 4 notes to give it a more jazzy feel to it. Really nice stuff though! The tip about sidechaining the reverb was very usefull never heard of someone doing it.
in my humble opinion you are better than mount kimbie... :P could you please make an ep or something? :D and try out to bitcrush these sine wave chords. just put the resolution to max and lower the downsampling rate. i think it sound awesome! :) but im quite sure it isnt what mount kimbie did. ^^
are you sure about your definition of creative commons? don't you remember crystal castles getting into trouble for sampling another artist who was releasing stuff on creative commons, in like 2007? (I could be mistaken, it may have been the case that they just didn't accredit the original artist)
Something I've been really trying to create are the repitched vocal sounds found in a lot of the post-dubstep music. My favorite particular use of this is in the last part of "Blind Night Errand". Have you figured out any of that stuff out? I'm personally using Ableton, but a lot of this stuff seems to carry over fairly well since you're mostly just explaining ideas. Also, know where I can find the clicky percussion/ really dry/layered clap sounds?
Thanks for all the great advice and resources! I also have a question...
I play in a band and have been experimenting with using logic 9 pro on my laptop in conjunction with a midi controller to get synth and electric piano sounds in a live environment. Do you have any recommendations for optimizing channel strip settings for use through a public address system or other external speaker source?
Great Tutorial! Maybe you should advise, that you have to mark “save Project with ultrabeatsamples” when saving the track? If not Ultrabeat will search for the samples next time. Well at least in Logic 8. Don´t know if they changed it in 9…
important question. i have this whole song at 170 bpm that i have been working on and it has a lot of audio samples. is there a way that i can change the tempo to 172 with out destroying all of the work i have done. i don't want all of the audio to stretch out. it would be a HUGE pain to fix all of that work.
hey sounds logical, I was wondering if you could do a video or tutorial about the style of remixing or other terms that Mt. Eden does, with the ambient background sounds and the fast drum beats over a slow sampling. Thanks
I've been playing around with the tuning preferences in Logic here and there lately, in there is a setting called hermode tuning, it's slightly different to equal temperament and makes those jazzy sorta chords sound real nice, I reckon those sinewave chords might sound interesting with it enabled...
@JustaMinuteJack Sorry, should have explained. FM8 is a synth plugin made by Native Instruments. It uses a type of synthesis called "Frequency Modulation" - it's by far and away the best synth for that technique. Google is your friend :()
@NotoriousMLC Hmm, well... The way I make tracks sound good isn't by mastering them. It's in the making of the sounds (synthesis, samples etc), the mixing, and the arrangement. In fact, I rarely do more than a bit of compression as far as mastering goes. But since this is such a popular question, I will make a video on my thoughts about this. Prob next weekend.
I am really happy you posted this video! I really learn a lot from all your videos because I am a logic user myself and you go over a lot of things that I have never seen. Thank you man, I know me and the community appreciate it.
wow that was gorgeous. maybe during the intro if you use a fast delay on that bell synth with some feedback to create a fluttery sound that might sound cool.
even though this wasn't strictly a tutorial it was still inspiring for me; i'd love to hear more of your work in vids like these
Hey mate, that song is great! I was wondering if you tried to add some delay or reverb to some of the mechanical sounds to give your song an other dimension or to add a lil deepness. But if you are aiming for minimalism, you sir are spot on.
@geekotron Definitely! Kimbie do that well. I think I'll set up a bunch of different reverbs and delays on sends, then automate the sends to keep the sounds moving through different spaces.
@soundsLogical Sweet! Do you already have a video showing how to automate the sends (or even to make sends)? It sounds pretty useful. Setting up those effects one by one on every track (especially with space designer) can be a lot of work sometimes. I'd love to see that!
Whats the name of the first Mount kimbie track you played?
