100 years ago our soldiers fought in trenches every day, now they cant figure out how to climb out of what looked to be a shallow banked canal? There is something wrong with this picture, and I don't think it has to do with the chances of getting stuck in a canal in the middle of the desert.

There was a soldier I went threw infantry school with,can't remeber is name though.Died because he steped right off into a canal full of water on a night patrol and drowned be for is platoon notticed he was missing.With full battle rattle he went straight to the bottom.

Try climbing out of a 6 ft deep dirt trench with crumbling walls while carrying a full armor loadout, a SAW, water, chow and 800 rounds without any help in the middle of an Iraqi summer day while its 120 degrees F. ...look it up. Modern infantrymen carry nearly 1.5 times as much. Then stop and think about it - medieval knights spent there time riding horses, running, engaged in hand to hand combat. If they carried as much as modern troops they'd collapse from exhaustion 5 minutes into the battle.
