One should b careful. I pulled something out of place on my 1st finger just messing around with a cello on a store that had a high bridge. I was playing around like I was doing violin vibrato on it, and days later I noticed I did something to my finger. Moving it around I noticed I something out of place. Since it doesn't hurt, I don't want surgery. It doesn't bother me to play violin, but I regret doing that; is the stupidest thing I've done and I do feel it when I move my finger by itself.
Don't play in pain. If it is more serious treat it through a Doctor/Sports injury specialist, then a Violin teacher who is very familiar with common Violin injury problems. There are also a number of Violinists who also specialise in Alexander.
Why a good teacher is very important in playing any instrument. If they can't cure you they should be able to highlight faults in technique/posture.Pain through faulty technique leads to frustration and poor progress, everything becomes much less efficient much more difficult to execute. It can also be a vicious circle, related muscles being overworked, trying to compensate for others that are strained.
I love you my dear and you should try your voice in talking directly. I enjoyed listening to you talk like than much of the last few playing. Keep video stuff...and just about stuff.
took a lot of money, ripped me and that is all. i was lucky to call back in Europe and get right diagnose through phone, after that i started recovery, why i payed usa money hungry doctors thousands, i still do not know.
i guess she is well protected, first of all she is american in america, then, guess there is a lot of protection behind her. i found america very dangerous place for the foreign talented musicians, usa can be like jungle for them
she suggests to see therapist in the usa. american doctors are extremely dangerous with misdiagnoses as it was my experience, many times one gets contrary opinions by those doctors who also charge fortune and rip you off, if no insurance, and some other terrible american companies, one has to sell house, in order to go through those disgusting american health treatment experiences, finally to find out what is going on. I saw 4 renowned american doctors, they all had contrary diagnoses...
the problem with her is her music is too perfect for humans. She just gives life to the music part. Indeed it's not a big issue, but maybe a little disturbing for her contemporaries. In 50 or 60 years of time, they will more focus on her music and she'll be appreciated in a easier way. Good thing is she doesn't seem to hear with stupid kind of discussions and keep living her life.
Let's say that she's just a pretty girl playing very good music, that may be the only things she want to hear. :-)
There is a book called "Violin Playing: A Physiological Approach" written by Isaak A. Vigorchik which you can get for very little money if not free. This book helps violinists to revise technique in order to be comfortable and avoid strain. I found it extremely helpful and I recommend looking at it if you have any issues with recurring pain.
@ineschoupa Oh, that was just in response to some idiot whose comment has since been flagged as spam. I'd like to see Hilary Hahn play live sometime, as her youtube videos knock me out.
Hilary Hahn and Valentina Lisitsa are fantastic people. Which consecrated musicians today make a video like this, with that kind of tip? I included Valentina here because sometimes she does something similar in her channel too.
Now the mouse is back next to the keyboard. And my shoulder isn't overstretched. There's always an emotional something going on I think as well, even when you're not aware that you are doing something whether with the instrument or in another part of life that's causing stress.
The soreness could come from something else besides violin playing.
I had a problem with my right shoulder since I have used a computer stand where there's not an incredible amount of space for the mouse besides the keyboard. I put it next to the monitor, but that's quite a bit higher and farther to stretch. I thought it (the soreness) was from piano playing but it wasn't. I just found this out yesterday or the day before.
Suggestion box, it would be intresting to see what you like for drills and exercises. Even more interesting, what is your pattern of layoffs. Thanks for taking us along for the ride.
Well, one also should make sure that he/she is playing the right-size violin--being 4'11'' I should not have been playing a full-size but I did and ended up with a lot of pain. Playing on my 3/4 has made all the difference.
I love when you give out these advices! I love your youtube acount! You're a very nice person! Keep on your beautiful playing! I wish you could come to Portugal soon!
Thank you for talking about these issues Hilary. As someone who did play through pain during my undergrad years, resulting in more serious, permanent nerve damage and pain I feel that it is incredibly important to get the message out that you should never play through pain! I would also add that Alexander technique or Feldenkrais can also help to prevent or relieve pain or injury.

She seriously gives enough material here, in 3:27, to teach an entire college course. Easily. This is awesome.

Hilary, I'm 17 and I've been playing since I was 3. I just had carpal tunnel surgery a few weeks ago. Have you ever had any such injuries?
