"there's really one rule for hitting: JUST HIT THE D... BALL DONT F... OVER THINKING IT".
yeah, for labor-day slowpitch tournaments it's probably the best advice.
pro hitting requires a bit more of brains.
I agree on the kid's lower body faults, but the purpose of the video is not "how to make Joe here a better hitter", it is "how to get your good hitters control the right-field hit".
"...baseball coaching is so out of wack" is top comment? okay.
heres my opinion.
basically, the purpose of the drill was to hit into the net, when you dont do that, its considered a failure. there is a purpose to the drill, when the purpose is not met, you are critisized. sorry, baseball just a tough sport.
@BURNINGxPANDA28 So drills can and should exist in a vacuum without having to relate to game situation? I'm glad you were never my coach. So, what exactly is the purpose of this drill beyond the game of hitting it into a net? How does this translate to real baseball? Isn't that what drills are for, to make you a better player? So, please, explain to us how the skills acquired in this drill would make one a better hitter in baseball games?
@BURNINGxPANDA28 he also hit the ball where it was pitched, that ball was thrown pretty much down the plate, and the general rule is hit it where its pitched
they stress this so much but don't even understand the purpose of it. What would be even more productive for this kid is fixing his bad lower body mechanics
Here is another opposite field hitting strategy I would use. Facing a dominate hitter and were in late innings and the score is tied. We have a runner on 2nd no outs. Next hitter I want a grounder to the right side. Either at 2nd or first baseman or the gap. The runner on two is aggressive and takes 3rd base.
Now that I have the runner at 3rd base I can do a squeeze or have a passed ball, sacrifice fly and many, many more options than with a runner on two. It’s called manufacturing runs. Championship teams know how to win! Either with hitting strategy, aggressive base running or a combination of the two. I also agree with not hitting into a double play! But don’t limit your poor kids.
basebull is totally right some of my old coaches used 2 b the sameway and if this kid hits the screen and there is a good right side of the infield he is out i would prefer a double/triple
Yeah, basebull is right on. These kinds of drills are good when done properly, but this one is not. A double down the line is not a good hit? WTF? Opposite-field drills are great for kids who try to pull everything, but getting "on top of" the ball is crap. Hitting OF is all about your hips and driving through the inner (not upper) half of the ball. Plus, the tosser needs to give him outside pitches!
@ThePapayaKing Your right. I remember my coach telling me to hit the top of the ball, and I kept that in my mind and struggled a lot. My father who dosent know shit about baseball told me to hit the inside of the ball and I found more success.
Well I don't disagree with the drill and what the idea was, you want to make sure you can hit to a certain part of the field. But you hit the ball where it is placed in the zone. I can't tell exactly but if the guy tossed it down the middle and he hit a line drive up the middle then he hit the ball correctly and in the right place! Also the last hit on here he thought was good... Because he hit the screen but the batter was off balance and almost fell into it... I'm sorry but that's not good!!!
You people are idiots!! The purpose of the drill is to hit opposite field. (the screen) It's not that they were bad hits it was just the purpose of the drill.
I agree with "Basebull". You are happy with an opposite field grounder but not with a line drive to the opposite field? Stop listening to this person NOW!
now the way he explains it its like he wants a ground ball...tes we want to get on top of the ball but he never says why...the purpose of that is to create back spin which helps the ball carry...without back spin its nearly impossible to hit a home run...exceptions may be barry bonds pujols and so on
@basebull He fell off balance because the pitch was an inch or so off the plate. In BP you practice as if you have 2 strikes, so sometimes you have to fall off balance to poke the ball into play. Especially if it is opposite field like this drill.
@sh4rpsh0t33 - I get what your saying but you don't practice to fall over and lose balance. Believe me you can train to hit an outside pitch 3" outside and still be balanced! It would have been fine if the coach picked it up but he didn't. And the first hit looked like it was over the middle of the plate I paused it on contact, so it wasn't his mistake. It was the guy tossing it! I can think of far better drills to work on hitting outside pitches than this one. To many variables 4 this drill
@BluePaisley Like I said he fell off balance because the last pitch was probably a ball. It's really not that easy to stay balanced and be able to get a base hit. 90% of the time you won't swing at that anyhow. In batting practice though it is important to be able to fight that off if you were to have two strikes. The drill is not that great in my opinion unless someone really is incapable of going the other way.
@basebull The drill is to work on hitting to the opposite field. And the coach pitching is throwing outside pitches, so even though that was a really good hit, the coach is telling him he needs to go to opposite filed with an outside pitch. The coach is somewhat right.
@basebull Why is he saying this...cause nothing more frustrating then when you have a runner on 1st, less than two outs and the batter should be trying to hit behind the runner on first. But he lines it to center field so no extra bases for the runner! 20 plus ways to score from 3rd as a base runner, how many from second?
@Hittingcoach1 - Telling players to take it the other way is just a coaching strategy to make sure the hitters don't pull an outside pitch and hit into an easy double play. If I am coaching GOOD hitters, I just want them to hit the ball hard wherever it is pitched. You really get upset when a player singles and you have runners on first and second with 1 out? Poor kids...
@IronPancake The goal of any drill should be to prepare for the game of baseball. You hit the ball in that net –especially if you're "hitting down on the ball" as the coach is saying – you're just practicing to ground out/line out to the first baseman.
U teaching a kid that hits shots to line drive himself out at 2nd or 1st base wtf

Why not sac bunt the runner from second over to third. know you have opts for getting the runner home. Highest % of scoring comes from thirdbase....

Take a step back form your computer and look at this drill.
The kid hits line drives to the outfield and the coach says "no that's not good, hit it at the screen".
Then the kid takes one of his worst swings of the round, falls off balance, hits the screen, and the coach is happy.
Just shows you how basball coaching is so out of wack.
