It is conceivable that far into the future even with the intense heat of the Earth's interior that the Earth will be almost enveloped in cities. The inside will become so thoroughly colonised that most of the itnerior volume will consist of underground cities. The core it's self will be a giant dimentional tunnel that is not a flat portal but a portal you could enter in all directions and maybe end up in the center of another planet of another colony or something.
