If ya win KOTR you were guaranteed to become Champ? I wonder what Owen's thinking as he looks down from the rafters of heaven? Mabel, Ken Shamrock, Billy Gunn, William Regal, El Matador, Don Muraco, are still waiting for that Championship run.
The most puzzling winner had to be Mable in 1994. Men on a Mission never really struck it big and this did nothing to enhance Mable or the tournament.
wrong the first KOTR winner was NOT Bret Hart. The first KOTR winner was Don Muraco in 1985. Then Harley Race in 1986. Randy "Macho Man" Savage in 1987. Million Dollar Man in 1988. El Matador in 1989. Bret Hart won in 1991 & 1993. The Rocket won in 1994. Mabel in 1995. Stone Cold in 1996. The Game in 1997. Ken Shamrock beat the Rock in 1998. Billy Gunn in 1999. Kurt Angle in 2000. Edge in 2001. Brock Lesnar in 2002. Booker T in 2006. Regal in 2008. Shameus 2010. The best to win it: Macho King!

The tournament would've been more of a success....if they granted the King of the Ring winner, a shot at that WWF title, that very night. The concept here would've put more emphasis on the tournament and more established stars would enter in the tournament; while giving the champion the challenge of preparing to face any one of 16 potential challengers.
@MephProduction that only ever happened one year, the very last KOTR in 02' the winner was guaranteed a title shot at summerslam- (Lesnar beating rock). Coincidently mabel who won the tourny in 95 got a title shot at that yr's SS, not cos he won the KOTR, but because he was just on top at that time
@mathraua ah i haven't watched wwf/wwe for ten years. lol the last KOTR i remember was Shamrock, i would watch it again but it's not on any of the uk tv stations i get, but i keep an eye on on some of the content on youtube and anything regarding old favorites.. :P But Mable wining his event was just awful, at least he did it in the worse possible way. lol
@MephProduction Hahaha your right about mable. He was given a massive push in summer of 95, he actually beat the undertaker on his way to winning the KOTR. Two legends won it in the 2 yrs before. Bret in 93 then owen in 94, and then they gave it Mable. Even though legends like austin and triple h went on to win it, for me the credibility of the tournament was lost when they gave this guy the honor.
Aww shit, man, that's classic! Hearing this again takes me right back to watching "Superstars" on Saturday & Sunday mornings on Channel 5 back in the early-90's. FUCK, I MISS those days!!! :)
I always liked this instrumental...but, the actual "THE KING OF THE RING!" lyric isn't in this version for some reason. (Whatever happened to the cat who sung it? I'd like to meet that dude--PAUSE! Lol!) I'd like to hear that lyric again. As corny as that sounds. Lol...
Really, KOTR should return as a PPV for all brands, with the winner getting a title shot at Summerslam. Unlike now that they do it between shows and once in a while (like every2 years, as Booker was in 06 and Regal in08).
KOTR should be brought back as an eight-man tournament on one night with the winner getting a world title shot at SummerSlam. Coronation, crown...etc...everything.
Do an 8-man tournament for Raw, SD and ECW on their shows, with a triple-threat tournament at KOTR: 1st Round cage, 2nd: TLC, 3rd: Elimination match... perhaps a scoring method; most victories win? No wait...the final match should be an iron-man triple threat match
@seanadam i agree, i feel like this ppv launched careers and made stars out of people. if you won king of the ring you were almost guaranteed to become wwf champion or have a huge buzz.
ya tell me about it. but if you think about it, it was good that HHH was being punished because Austin kicked so much ass since then and it was freaking awesome to see vince get his ass kicked by the toughest SOB today lmao
@KamHtown It's possible that the WWF might have ceased to exist because they were close to that point as it was. Then again, that King Of The Ring was just 2 weeks before Hulk Hogan shocked the world by aligning with the NWO at Bash At The Beach '96.
i was watching a show on cnbc the other night and they were showing a video with this as the background music...so I dont think it was created by WWF themselves...still think its an AWESOME theme song though
yeah, i notice that too. I hear the Hardy Boys & Hardcore Holly themes in commercials. I think WWE license out their music, because Jim Johnson is credited with making the songs.
Actually the vid I saw that had this as its background music was made in the 80s, not sure if the WWF used this theme for the original KOTR shows or not...but like I said, either way, still awesome theme
Mabel at least did something with the crown. Going for the World title against Diesel, feuding with Undertaker. I think after HHH won, KOTR went down. it really meant nothing after that. Shamrock, Billy Gunn, Brock or RVD i think. Can't remember who won, but that's kinda my point
Brock won KOTR and became the then youngest World champion in history. Which isn't nothing in my book. WWE just didn't know how to push those who won any further than the World title.
This event actually meant something back in the day, this year (although I like Regal) they threw this event down the toilet and treated it like garbage, cheap matches, cheap finishes
I know, they should have played this theme when Regal won the crown earlier this year, Regal is one of the few wrestlers left that can actually give some meaning to the KOTR crown
Thank you for posting this man! I've been looking for this for years. Any clue what the other song was it cued to during the opening of the first few KOTRS for the last half of it?

Stone Cold Steve Austin.
It was the most important win of them all. Afterall it gave birth to 'Austin 3:16'.

Austin wasn't even suppose to win. Triple H was going to win the KOTR but at the time was being punished. History may have been so different.
