wrong the first KOTR winner was NOT Bret Hart. The first KOTR winner was Don Muraco in 1985. Then Harley Race in 1986. Randy "Macho Man" Savage in 1987. Million Dollar Man in 1988. El Matador in 1989. Bret Hart won in 1991 & 1993. The Rocket won in 1994. Mabel in 1995. Stone Cold in 1996. The Game in 1997. Ken Shamrock beat the Rock in 1998. Billy Gunn in 1999. Kurt Angle in 2000. Edge in 2001. Brock Lesnar in 2002. Booker T in 2006. Regal in 2008. Shameus 2010. The best to win it: Macho King!

The tournament would've been more of a success....if they granted the King of the Ring winner, a shot at that WWF title, that very night. The concept here would've put more emphasis on the tournament and more established stars would enter in the tournament; while giving the champion the challenge of preparing to face any one of 16 potential challengers.

Coincidently mabel who won the tourny in 95 got a title shot at that yr's SS, not cos he won the KOTR, but because he was just on top at that time

@MephProduction Hahaha your right about mable. He was given a massive push in summer of 95, he actually beat the undertaker on his way to winning the KOTR. Two legends won it in the 2 yrs before. Bret in 93 then owen in 94, and then they gave it Mable. Even though legends like austin and triple h went on to win it, for me the credibility of the tournament was lost when they gave this guy the honor.

Really, KOTR should return as a PPV for all brands, with the winner getting a title shot at Summerslam. Unlike now that they do it between shows and once in a while (like every2 years, as Booker was in 06 and Regal in08).
