Critiquing the Critics: "Bad Movie Beatdown" (Film Brain) review.

But, all-in-all, Mathew Buck (the person behind Film Brain) seems like a genuinely amicable and lovely young bloke (for proof, I suggest watching his commentary on Kickassia). Which is probably why his anger or sarcasm comes off a bit forced: he's too sweet a lad to believe that he's really that volatile ;)

Film Brain is still very young and has alot to learn when it comes to acting, but he's clearly developing. I prefer his written reviews in which he displays his full intelligence. Acting wise, he's better under directorship, like in Doug's yearly specials; and I think he lacks confindence in his own acting, which shows up in the "plaster an expression on your face that never reaches your eyes" mask-like quality to his performances.

Hey Mr. Horror.  First let me say you did a great job breaking down the the highs and lows of Film Brain. For the most part, I agree with you.

However, the main reason I'm posting is because your description asked about your Mic. I don't know if anyone has said this yet, but, for some reason your voice over audio sounds far more distant than your on camera audio. Usually you'd expect it to be the other way around, with the voice over being more "intimate."

Go figure. I only just started watching Film Brain last weekend. I'm liking what I see so far, but yes he is a big nostalgia critic ripoff, but I seem to like ripoffs better than others. I don't mind his mugging either. Good review.

I agree with you 100 on this one Blake. FilmBrain can be funny, and he can also be dreadfully dull. He's only as good as the material he has to work with, and that's not really to his detriment.

My personal thoughts and going off his post-Kickassia work only, his weak reviews are funnier than NC's weak reviews, his average ones are better than NC's average ones (also going off of post-Kickassia work mainly because it's freshest in my mind) and his best reviews are not as good as NC's best reviews. I agree about him being an NC ripoff, but I've noticed myself judging reviewers in my mind as "a cross between NC and Film Brain", meaning their styles are different enough.

Oh, and good review of him BTW, but I'm surprised you didn't mention his nitpicking, something that annoys the hell out of me with his reviews and something he has copped before.

@poonoo87 I had something like that in my notes, but I never found it to be a dominating issue (it seems some reviews have a lot of that, but I guess that ties in with the material). I also intended to say something along the lines of how his reviews of comedies often have too many "That's not funny" lines.

Downloading Blip videos is easy once you know how, you need Internet Explorer (or at least Chrome doesn;t work for me, Firefox might) and go to their blip channel. Go to the URL and add (/rss) to it (no brackets of course) and their are download links next to the comments button. That is how I got my Film Brain "Review" footage that you referenced at 5:58 (I know it's mine because the sound is shit)

I was panicking too until someone on a forum pointed that out.

I think Film Brain's more into actually criticizing the movies more than relying on jokes throughout the whole review which I like. Yes, he does do jokes but he does bring up a lot of good points about the movies he talks about. NC always seemed to go into the movies a bit blind and only merely riffed on the movies for comedic effect, which is good but sometimes it isn't good when you're not familiar with the material ala Good Burger.

Speaking of Film Brain, I like him. His first videos were meh, but I saw potential in him. I was freaked out by his early backlash. I felt bad for Snob fans wanting his head for the McBain vid with the Snob. I looked at it like this: at that time he was in the middle of college testing (super stressful) and comes home to wanting his head on a stick. Amazing that he could endure, I'd probably snap.

@sneezewhistle Yeah, I made a mistake in lowering the volume too much, thinking before it was much louder than the video. and yeah, FB took some time to get used too but he's not bad. Tbf, the Snob is VERY hard to do crossovers with as his style is unique. Plus, his fans can be brutal.
