That could never happen. If you go up then you would need to do work which would increase your potential energy. In this thing your potential energy would remain the same but you would continue to do work. Physically impossible...

No you are the one missing the point! This was originally from a piece of art work that depicted an puzzling and yet physically impossible situation. This is not meant to be a physics problem! You are missing the point because you start analysing it using physics. Even an idiot knows that it is not possible in real life.

@XboXFTW1 In Mario they actually warped your position, I noticed since my Nintendo 64 would lag after doing it for so long. That's why the backwards long jump glitch works cause it makes you go so fast you skip the warping point and climb the stairs. In this mans case since the camera was acting as his Third Person view he could see the stairs in it's paradoxial way, but once he broke it he was free and the illusional stairs had to break because illusions like that can't exist in a 1stpersn view

this stairs are possible in 3D. I have build such one as model linking the end of a helix stair to its beginnig. In reality their was no gradient more. the "stair" was flat, in reality a platform with steps tilted about 45°.
Reminds me of portal when he was doing the rappelling.
