  • had this on 8 track... remember them? good music and good times... thanks for making and sharing.....

  • Emmit Rhodes was the biggest new thing in music in late 1970, then disappeared as fast as he appeared...

  • Thanks for posting. I bought a box set of his about a year or so ago, was very reasonable. It's good to know he's back in the studio again after all these years.

  • My favorite 4: Mother Earth, Fresh as a Daisy, My face on the floor and Textile Factory.. too many.

  • LOVE THIS SONG, JUST LOVE HIS SONGS,i GO BACK TO MY TEEN YEARS, HEALING SONGS, GAVE ME STRENGTH JUST TO WAKE UP IN THE MORNING, AND GO TO SCHOOL, FACE THE DAY OR HELPED ME UNWIND WHEN i CAME HOME, HIS MUSIC SAVED ME THROUGH THE HARD AND SAD AND DIFFICULT TIMES AND HAPPY ONES WHEN THEY CAME ALONG, LIFTED MY SPIRITS WHEN I WAS SO DOWN, HE'S AMONG MANY ARTIST THAT KEPT ME GOING, MIXED WITH MY FAITH THAT KEPT ME ALIVE, THE BLEND OF FAITH AND MUSIC, IS WHY I AM HERE TODAY.

  • I love them all; my personal favorite is "You Must Have" Only just discovered Emiit about a couple weeks ago, so I'm still kinda new to him. :P

  • I just bought it through Amazon... it's wonderful

  • At 1:21, Emitt hits the rhythm guitar a little late. If he had protools back then, he would have probably moved it up in time a pinch.

  • Emmit gets nothing for his work !

  • its sounds like paul

  • Every track on the album 'Emitt Rhodes' is a gem. In time it will eventually establish its true place near the top of the pile, just like Nick Drake did.

Is this the right place to be amazed at what a hugely influential band the Beatles were. So many artists built their sound (and careers) around just one of the hundreds of great ideas that the Beatles had.

  • This was my first album. I still have it. It is well played

  • This was my first album. I still have it. It is well played.

  • oh man I would've had to go with "long time no see"

  • I posted my comment before looking on Amazon. They have a 2 CD set that even has "Tame the Lion," plus Emmetts' recordings with The Merry-Go-Round. GOOOOD stuff!

  • I actually have a copy of this OUTSTANDING LP on CD. It came out in the early 90s on the One Way label. The hard LP to find on CD is Mirror. This stuff is great!

  • Check out "kittibutt" channel to hear some catchy original pop rock songs -

try it, you might like it!

  • Puts Paul to shame for the times . . . yeah, I bought this album when it appeared in the racks. Strong song that doesn't reek. Very solid album for any time debuted. Dee dee dee dee dee dumb four lettered word that begins with the sixth position of the alphabet.

  • Thank god for amazon's reccomendations! I just saw this on amazon and thought i'd check it out. Awesome! Thanks for posting :D

  • how in gods name did he not make it huge /fantastic songs .if u have to pay 40 dollars for it then pay it you wont be dissapointed

  • I'm not sure why you say this is not available on CD...it is...and for much less than 40 dollars

  • Yeah, I guess I need to update that info since the Hip-O CD has been released. Then again, maybe I need to delete this video entirely since the "point" of it no longer really exists. Hmmm. I'll think about what I want to do.

  • @myrecordcollection Never delete it ! This is great !!! We need more Emitt anywhere, everywhere !!!!...thanks for posting -)

  • The warm sound of Emitt Rhodes on vinyl. Remind me of buying this for next to nothing at a used record store in 86. love it.

  • I live in Scotland and have been looking for Emmit discs for ages where are they availlable

  • Always was one of my faviorites of Emitt's. Like his idol, Brian Wilson, Emitt made great use of modulation, harmony, and chord changes. Live! on, Emitt. Looking forward to hearing from you.

  • Wow! discovered the man by accident only a couple of months ago, wonderful stuff, now my son likes him too!

  • Emitt was my favorite artist from the early 70's. I hope and pray he is willing to come back from his hiatus to continue sharing his music with his fans.

  • The whole record is great, but "Lullaby" is a gem.

  • i have this album on CD...it is a masterpiece

  • my fave song is Long Time No See.

  • i only heard lullaby before this video.

emitt is amazing. thanks for putting these 4 tunes together!

although they are sad songs, they make me smile :)

  • I love this record! He would have been right up there with Jackson Browne and James Taylor if he had continued writing and recording. But, I understand he was crushed by a bad contract.

  • He was way too naive, hence, trusting, of his first record company. He was thinking of them as family, they were thinking of him as money maker.

  • Slight faint similarity to Crosby, Still and Nash's 'Our House'', hunh? No dis intended...

  • @Khultan only if you are my mother--she thinks all this music sounds alike. I love CSNY, but other than the fact that ER and CSNY were contemporaries, they are nothing alike.

  • Emitt STILL HAS the beautiful old keyboard seen in the gatefold sleeve pic from the first solo album! It sits in a corner of his home studio and still looks the same as it does in that photo! I discussed buying it from him several years ago, but we couldn't agree on a price(SIGH). I was gonna offer it to the RRHOF Museum in Cleveland if we had struck a deal, oh well :/

  • Yes, I bought The Emitt Rhodes recordings and for mr it's abSOULutely worth it AS I'm also teaching myself to learn the art of guitar playing.

  • MRC, thanks, man. I'm hearing this for the first time and I definitely love the first song and can identify with it instantly. So, let me listen to the second song and so on and enjoy....thank you! : )

  • Emmit has his own MySpace page and is recording a new album with The Emmit Rhodes Band. Check it out.

  • I have 2 lp's and a CD called Listen, Listen...Best of Emmitt Rhodes. I got the 2 records in a "cut out" bin at a Woolco store in Florida in the 70's. Great stuff, but I don't have a turn table anymore. Thanks for the memories!

  • thanks to uploader

  • I don't think the initials were GM for those songs, There managers name was LSD. pot and heroin.

  • goldsmice, you have named some fine ER songs and I'm happy you appreciate Paul's bass-playing, but I still suspect that you haven't been exposed to whole McCartney records because you have named only 'greatest hits' you dislike.

I can't help but think that you'll kick yourself one day after you find yourself moved by Little Lamb Dragonfly, Tomorrow, Arrow Through Me and dozens of other fantastic melodies...

  • I think you just need to realize that you have a totally different taste in songs than golsmice here. I love PmC's solo work, and i love Emitt Rhodes' solo work as well. However, i think ER's songs beat the heck out of the ones you just mentioned. Whoever is 'better' of the two, i'm not even gonna start to talk about.

  • Look, McCartney was an incredible bassist - I think he might be the best in rock history. Especially on Abbey Road his bass playing is as much of the song's melody as the guitar or the vocals. In some cases, more. But as a solo act I think Emitt is superior and I'm sticking to that. These aren't his four best songs: Really Wanted You, Mirror, Bubblegum the Blues, Birthday Lady, My Love is Strong, and Live, Gonna Fight the War and Low Down with Merry GO Round are even better. They ROCK.

  • by the way, those McCartney songs I mention above can all be heard on youtube

  • I bought this when it first came out and always thought that other than WNEW FM in NYC, and me even knew how great this guy was! It remaines a favorite! I can't wait for MORE!

  • ptowngm: I also bought this when it came out, and also his 2 later albums. He seems to have disappeared after that. Add Philly's WMMR FM to list of stations where he got airplay, but he was unknown then and forgotten now. It's great to hear this again!

  • Didn't know anone else knew about him. I played this album till to death.Besides WNEW there was also a really good a.m station out of Allentown,pa that played emmitt rhodes. VERY occasionally WXPN plays a cut. I think I still have the album in my attic. Is he still alive?

  • His first good solo albums have just been re-released in a box set. Get it from Amazon. And yes he is still alive. So I hear!

  • ...

  • Not to mention fine records like Flaming Pie, Driving Rain and his most recent masterpiece, the completely forgettable on first listen but after the fifth an incredible accomplishment known as

CHAOS AND CREATION IN THE BACKYARD

kind of like Emitt's Farewell to Paradise, but less flawed.

    Yours in pop-snobbery,

    fabgal aka violetsmom

  • goldsmice - see Staltek's comment

An effort to dig deeper into McCartney's output will probably make you feel silly for your solo mccartney = mediocre pronouncement

Those who accept this ridiculous statement will lose out on discovering the deeper tracks by paul & wings - and lose out on discovering the best 'power pop' of the 70s. You'll find a half-dozen great beauties for every less-than-stellar piece of filler

  • Atticus, these are not the top tracks on the record. Try hearing Ever Find Yourself Running, Promises I've Made, With my Face of the Floor, She's Such a Beauty, which may help you understand the fuss. MIRROR, ER's second official solo record, is much more fleshed out and better leverage in Rhodes v Macca discussion - it's more of a grower, a good indicator of quality in my opinion.

  • he si great, but nothing compares to The BEATLES.

  • For God's sake, I'm not saying that Emitt Rhodes is better than THE BEATLES, I am saying that as an individual singular musician Emitt Rhodes is more talented than Paul McCartney as an individual singular musician. Rhodes' entire discography blows McCartney's SOLO career out of the water with an atomic warhead. "Let 'Em In?" "Uncle Albert?" "Band on the Run?" Solo McCartney = silly, trite, utterly mediocre pop music. Emitt Rhodes = Genius. There is no comparison.

  • I wholeheartedly disagree with your opinion of Paul McCartney. Furthermore, what I'm hearing here sounds far from genius.

  • As an aside, one of the greatest indicators of ignorance & stupidity labouring under the delusion of being cool & knowing is dissing Paul McCartney. When they've created stuff like Paperback Writer, Helter Skelter, She's Leaving Home, etc etc & become amazing bassists in the greatest most innovative band there's been...maybe then their views will be worth something.

  • I don't really see any coparison. Except that ERhodes didn't really need a George Martin. I wonder who he pissed off? Probably the fags. Sure did a number on Miss Ca.

  • Whereas the guy behind a track like Helter Skelter really did need a George Martin?

  • I just bought it! Thanks for the info.

  • Emmit is the best, and sounds just like McCartney. Maybe better. He should have made it big.

  • I love Emitt

  • at the time of these releases I was most definetly drawn to emmitt rhodes for his beatlesque(albeit unintentional) sound. As an aside I always wondered how he'd perform live and why he chose to play all the instruments himself(hmmm just like paul on his first solo lp)

  • This was the first album I ever owned. I played grooveless. I still have it. Can't really compare to anyone. Definately not the Beatles. Why do people always need to compare lesser knowm artist to famous ones?

  • Another artist I had never heard of but found on this channel. Should get more attention but you have done your part to spread the word, as you have done for many others.

  • Why do you feel the need to run down McCartney while trying to turn people on to Rhodes? Because of their similarities, it's actually McCartney fans who might be drawn to Rhodes. There's no question Rhodes has talent, but he hasn't put out an album in 35 years. By the way, McCartney did record "Come and Get It" and the Badfinger release pretty much copied his version note for note.

  • I agree with Iowcountry, the reason Emitt's music is so similar is also no doubt cus he is a beatles as well as McCartney fan he was born in 1950 that means he was in his teens when all the big beatles stuff came out why would you wana badmaouth McCartney Emitt May have taken the sound somewere you like better but the beatles influence is obvious, oh but iow he has been making albums himself for 35 years but has not released them, although in january he got money to release a new album.

  • If you listen to the English documentary on Badfinger, Mike Gibbins says outright that they wanted to "interpret" the song, but Paul INSISTED on them doing it note-for-note. I believe his judgment was right. Look at how it launched BF...

  • Love it!! Song writing style similar to McCartney but,his singing reminds me more of someone else, right on the tip of my tongue, maybe Harry Nilsson with someone else thrown in...

  • gosh, both Macca and Emitt are greats -- i think Flaming Pie, Chaos and Creation, and Memory Almost Full have more than a few redeeming moments--- i forgive scary things like "Ebony & Ivory" --- regardless, i loved these Emitt LP's when they came out and they still sound great-- no need to slag somebody to appreciate what Emitt accomplished.

  • ....and "Face on the Floor"

My LP is not quite worn out yet, but getting close.....

  • my thanks to weezer, however one song is missing...his "hit" from that album...you take the dark out of the night. got a lot of radio play in central ny back them...and my vynyl still sounds great

  • Seriously these three songs saved my life when I was real low. Now I am doing a lot better and I love to listen to this still, because it is iconoclastic!

  • One of my favorites from a generation gone by. I only wish he would come out of retirement. I anxiously wait for his cd's to come out in America. Ohio Steel

  • He HAS! Emitt is currently in the studio, finishing recording what will be his first album since "Farewell To Paradise"! He joined the band formerly known as "Cody Roads" (who are now known as "the Emitt Rhodes Band) and they will be releasing the album SOON! There is also talk about doing some touring, although on a LIMITED (local) Basis!!

  • BTW I don't even think these four songs come close to being his best songs...I would say "Birthday Lady," "Gonna Fight the War," "Live" and "Tame the Lion"...THOSE four songs OWN anything McCartney ever did after being part of the Beatles...I will upload those songs soon and post them here...

  • Well, I'm only dealing with this first album here. These are the four that I wanted to highlight from that album.

  • I appreciate it all the same...ANY AND ALL effort to popularize Emitt Rhodes and his music, and make people aware of who he is, is highly commendable. Why he is so obscure is totally beyond me - I guess most people would rather listen to Miley Cyrus.

  • I have this album too, and after not hearing about him after it I didn't know if he did anything else and I was too stupid to find out about others. This guy is a genius!!! I'm a songwriter too, and I know from experience that ABC Dunhill was a screwed up record company. The fact that they sued him because they wanted more quantity than quality tells it all. Out of all the bands and songwriters I've ever heard Emitt Rhodes and Arthur Lee and Love deserved success more than almost anyone. A shame

  • Well Goldsmice, I have to agree with matthewdeloach on this one. Rhodes is good. He very much reminded me of McCartney the first time I heard him in 1971. But I daresay Emitt himself would also call you an idiot for your attack on McCartney. "Maybe I'm Amazed," "Come and Get It," "Every Night," & "Dear Boy." That's four "solo" McCartney songs in the same vein as Emitt's work. I think they hold their own very nicely. Do you seriously assert that Emitt's songs "own" all of those songs?

  • I do, and I'm standing by what I said. McCartney had a few good hits; you're right. I never liked "Maybe I'm Amazed" (overdramatic and pompous). "Come and Get it" is a good one, but that was recorded by BADFINGER, not McCartney, although it was *written* by Paul. But the majority - the vast majority - of Paul's work, post-Beatles, just sounds like overproduced, over-the-hill, washed up crap. Rhodes had a FRESHNESS, a youthfulness, to his music; a real gritty, bluesy sound. Rhodes owns.

  • Not to mention a MUCH wider range, compared to McCartney. Listen to the early stuff with Merry Go Round, like "Gonna Fight the War," "Life," and "Low Down," then compare that to the stuff on Mirror and Farewell to Paradise, where he brings in a completely new sound that mixes the best elements of twangy American blues rock with British pop, for a darker and deeper style. His evolution as a musician over the course of his discography is astounding. He BLOWS AWAY Paul McCartney in the range dept.

  • Dude have you LISTENED to Paul McCartney's solo work? "Somebody's Knockin' On The Door?" "Band on the Run" (which has the most ridiculous lyrics ever)? " It's the lamest shit ever. There are a FEW good songs, like "Live and Let Die" and "Jet", but most of McCartney's SOLO work is lame as hell. Note that I said solo because AS PART OF THE BEATLES he was a genius. Definitely a genius.

But...taken solely as solo artists...Emitt Rhodes is better. Much better.

  • I agree that Paul's EARLY solo work was utter CRAP to what Emitt was accomplishing. BUT Paul's LATER work(post Wings) contains what I feel to be some of the BEST music he has ever written, even including his stellar work with the Beatles. I know this may sound awful but I think the overall quality of Paul's music improved VASTLY after Linda's death..maybe her death shook something loose in his soul that he hadn't felt in MANY years.

  • @Babyhowdy233 With Paul, it was "hit" or "miss." One must pay homage to something like "Maybe I'm Amazed," and even later gems like "My Brave Face," but I know what you mean. Saw Wings in St Paul summer of '76. Great show, though festival seating was a bit of trouble (had a knife pulled on me someone hogging seats for friends still on way in). I especially like Paul's work with Elvis Costello on Flowers in the Dirt -- "We got married," etc. More mature lyrics than usual from Paul.

  • Rhodes is fantastic but your an idiot if you think he is better then McCartney.

  • It is not fair that this guy's career went nowhere and Paul McCartney is now a billionaire. Rhodes was better, had better lyrics, better instrumentals, and was also better looking. McCartney was a great bassist in the context of the Beatles. Without them, on his own, his work is mediocre at best. Emitt Rhodes OWNS HIM.

  • I remember that when it was firsr released, one review stated that, "This is the album that Paul McCartney wished he had released." Can't believe how the music company powers screwed him over. I'd love to work with him with my own music, someday.

  • Everything he did was stellar. Maybe because he rocked the boat-producing his own work-the industry snubbed him. But, if you just listen to what he created...

  • whoa ... what a blast from the past! Yeah, old friends used to say this album sounds like McCartney's first solo album ... I thought side two was the better one

  • why isn't somebody made for me on here, that song is by far my fave...cool post though man.

  • I sympathize, but the best I could do is post the songs that are MY favorites. Actually, though, I do really like "Somebody Made for Me," too. That's part of the drag of just having ten minutes to work with. Hopefully we'll get a new CD of this album sometime soon and we can all enjoy our favorite jams!

  • great album was one of my favorites when it first came out...thanx for putting it on

  • there is a documentary in the works and most likely a re-release of all of his songs i bet. what label would miss out on that haha i might be eating my own words later on

  • add &fmt=18 to the URL and enjoy these in stereo plus higher quality!

  • sounds like Paul McCartney on his first solo album.

  • But Emmit's songwriting was more consistent on his 3 solo albums than Paul's work at the same time.

  • One of my favorite musicians from years gone by.

  • Thanx for posting this. I had all my vinyl ripped off in '87 and I had this album and Farewell to Paradise. Can't get them anywhere, like you said. Unless I want to pay a fortune. Which I may end up doing, just to have in my possession again.......

    ;o)

  • Do you have come ride, come ride?

    Can't find it anywhere.

  • Sorry, don't know that one.

  • Emmitt Rhodes, true genius, he did it all, each instrument, editing, producing....

  • emitt did all the instruments the mix and production himself.he started as lead singer hor merry go round in 1967.from this lp my fave is"ever find youself running?".his 71 lp mirrors is similar.

  • I can remember when this was released and how people thought his music sounded so much like Paul McCartney. It was a good seller in the Chicago area. She's Such a Beauty is the song I remember most fondly. I'm always looking for forgotten oldies like Fresh As A Daisy. I do a daily short local radio program on that topic.

  • Actually, I think that Emitt Rhodes should be compared to Tom Evans of Badfinger when we're talking about vocal similarity. and since I've mentioned Badfinger, I also think that Emitt's songwriting style is a LOT like Pete Hamm's. I swear I'm listening to a doppleganger here, especially on Fresh as a Daisy.

  • Great album. I still have my copy which I bought from E.J. Korvette's in the early '70s. My favorite tune from this collection is "She's Such a Beauty", but the four selected here are a great introduction to ER. Thanks for the memories.

  • If you can find a copy of Daisy Fresh from Hawthorne, CA, it's a best-of that includes his first album in its entirety. (Sadly, it too is out of print.)

  • I wish Emmitt made more songs like lullaby. so much better sounding than any other song i've listened to by him

  • on my profile I have a cover of lullaby by kid loco. you should check it out, hopefully you like it

  • Can you tell me who produced this album? Was in Hank MEDRESS & Appel?

  • I'm almost positive that Emitt produced it himself--don't have the LP jacket in front of me, though.

  • Produced by Emitt Rhodes and Harvey Bruce(pause the video at around 2:12).

  • A true Talent, Great stuff. Thanks for posting this.

    Bob

  • I love Emitt! He's great and I wish he'd do local clubs here in So. Cal, where he lives. This man deserves a life story done on him. I've read about how rough it's been for him and very compelling. Good looks, talent, and voice of an angel.

  • I always thought he was awfully cute!

  • Would you consider putting more Emitt on YouTube? Please?

  • Yes Emmitt is an Icon. I never get tired of listening to him....His music is so beautiful... It would be great if he toured, I'd be the first in line for sure..

  • What an overlooked talent. If you want to hear something he did that is REAL Beatles influenced, check out his song when he was with the band The Merry Go Round called "Listen Listen". I still have that single and this album (and the follow up) to this day and listen to this stuff on a regular basis.

  • track one: 0:00

    track two: 2:40

    track three: 5:18

    track four: 6:20

  • album cover pic looks a little like jared leto

  • my God, this music is perfect! reminds me of Chris Bell (check him out if you have not!) meets the Beatles, meets Badfinger. absolute bliss. thanks so very much for posting!

  • I purchased this album not long after it's release. It was one of my favorite of all time. Too bad not many heard of this album or artist. This is one of those classic records that makes one happy to be around in the early 70's.

  • You take the dark out of the night, you make it day...

  • I purchased this album in 1970. I am one month younger than Emitt Rhodes.

  • I was a DJ when "Daisy" came out, and I played it a lot. Picked up his albums and loved them. In the 80s I was at a songwriters event in L.A., standing in a long line to turn in a tape, and there next to me, waiting to do the same, was E.R. He had by this time dropped into near obscurity, and I tried to strike up a conversation, saying I had his albums and admired his work. He wouldn't even give me the time of day. Sad. Hope it was an anomaly; I still enjoy his songs.

  • This guy wrote, played most of the instruments, and sang most the back up vocals! Very talented and it's a shame he did not get the recognition that he deserved. I actually saw him in concert back in 73 (I believe)in NY at Carnegie Hall of all places! I lost all his stuff. Does anybody have his cut from the "Emitt Rhodes" album "You must have"? It is (I feel)his best!

  • For those of you who have never heard of Emitt Rhodes before, welcome to one of the many underappeciated artist under the Beatles spell & influence. At any rate, better late then never... this was a real classic album, from start to finish!

  • yep, great album. My fave track is "Somebody Made For Me" but every track is damn tasty

  • Why have I never heard this before??? This guy is BRILLIANT! Thanks for posting!

  • laughing, indeed!!! when I was about 15 I discovered an unlabeled open real tape of this guy who sounded like pual mccartney...I thought it was bootleg beatle stuff...just as good though anyway huh? Nice to see approval and resonance from others. emitt's tops :)

  • I just got this LP thanks to you :) I had his LP American Dream but, this one is just as good! Thanks!

  • Great! My goal of "spreading the word" about this album has officially been accomplished. Fortunately the LP itself isn't terribly rare because it did get pretty high in the album charts; lots of copies were sold. In fact at the store where I found my copy, I was able to choose between two that were there.

  • She's Such A Beauty?????

How could you leave this off the list.

    Is this man still alive?

I last listened to this album in 1972

    another YouTube phenomenon........

Please post She's such a Beauty!!!!

  • blows the mind doesn't it...takes ya right back over all them years :)

  • Awesome, thanx for posting mate!

  • Glad you folks are digging this. The whole album is a real winner; I think we should lobby the US Congress to get this released again on domestic CD.

  • one of the most underated artists

thank you for puting this up!

  • The most incredible tragedy in this age of the internet is the fact that Emmitt Rhodes isn't selling as an indie.

If the man would just PLEASE record and put it up on CD Baby or sell through the website I am certain it would be a go.

But the biggest travesty of justice is the fact that the record companies trashed this amazing talent the way they did.

Emmitt Rhodes should be a music icon and, in fact, he IS one.

  • Would it be possible to post 'With my Feet on the Floor'?

  • That should read 'Face on the Floor'! And I found it here on YT, so just ignore me today.....it's still early!

  • That's part of the reason I didn't choose to feature "Face on the Floor" or "Somebody Made for Me"--because I knew there were videos of them already. I hope this one comes out on domestic CD again soon.

  • Oh, man, thank you for this!!! I've often wondered why Emitt's music wasn't on YT!

I played this LP over and over.....still have it!

  • great collection, ever wanna sell any, give me a shout!
