The bass drum and snare rhythm in this video combined with a 8th note hi-hat and the Amen Break are the basic beats of D&B drumming. The idea of applying paradiddle stickings is a great way to enhance D&B beats. Cheers Ydna
I just found your channel. You're an awesome drummer, man. Props. And I love the advice you give. It's not about talent, it's about learning from others and taking what they do and putting your own spin on it.
Kool vids. KJ sawka does a great job of merging the 2 formats of live drumming and then using software to enhance his live drumming.Im just saying you dont have to be "team live" or "team electronic" they are both great and compliment each other
I never really spent much time on my rudiments. Seems like most really skilled drummers know at least the basics by heart, but I don't really see how really practical a paradiddle is when it doesn't accomplish much more than the easier.. single stroke... Is it really worth spending my time on?
As soon as you play the paradiddle on two different drums (RH on one, LH on the other) you will notice that it offers a lot of possibilities you couldn't play with the single stroke. A paradiddle is only a combination of the two most important things a drummer can learn: The single stroke and the double stroke...It helps you to switch hands whenever you want to without having to crossstick. It's really worth spending time with it..
@Jungleritter I can see that. I play metal primarily now though... and you don't really need that kind of skill for metal. I'm focusing more on PLAYIN' REALLY FAST so making next level beats doesn't seem all that important. Maybe some day!!
@Loustrikesagain how long u had been playing drums? maybe some drummer could think different than me. But observe how the pros play, and do not watch a video... they always talks or shows the BASICS because those boring exercises or rudiments are the FOUNDATIONS of their skills...if u analyze, brake it or slow the tempo and of their grooves, hand or foot ostinatos you would see rudiments.. ha! they also gives you the most important thing CONTROL, ACCENTS, SPEED ...
Try to accent the first and fifth note and feed from the rebound you get from doing this, it really helps. Stay relaxed and practice it every day a bit, it's gonna get better, you'll see.
@Jungleritter & @RetroJamie: The "breakthrough" moment for me was the inverted paradiddle. The RLRRLRLL thing felt forced and stiff for a long time, but when I played RLLRLRRL, it suddenly felt like all of the ghosted note patterns I'd been playing for years. That's when I understood.
Thanks man! You know, talent is what you might have or not have at the beginning, that's before you have to put in the hard work and the hours behind the kit :-)) Just have fun when you get your drumkit, play as often as you can and learn from others, that's what it all comes down too.
Cool videos man. It's kind of hard to hear your narration most of the time though, to be honest. I think you maybe need to speak up more into the mic, kind of drop off on the end of each sentence. It's not so much your accent as it is the volume level..
Thanks for the tip! I think the voice quality improved in my newer videos. It's a bit difficult to find the right balance with the mic, if it's too close to the mouth it doesn't work well because of too many hisses and pops, too far away is not good either :-)
I most play Metal & this is just amazing. I think I'm going to learn some basics so I can play Metal with a Jungle influence. Even though these are just basics, they seem so hard to me. I think once I get it down I can do so much with it.
It's all good, reminds me of my youth. Early '90's in the Midlands of England. Shit place but banging sounds. To see it played is truly awesome, well done dude.

love playing paradiddles in drum and bass though,it makes so much sense, took a while for me to get my head round slotting in extra kicks with the odd hand patterns!
great channel though, what you are saying is really sound and your technique seems top notch too...
The snare to my far left is my Sonor Jungle Trash Snare, there's a video on my channel featuring this snare, check it out. The other one is a 10" Mapex Black Panther
love all your vids! And every time I'm amazed by the sound of your main hi hat! It sound great! What model is it exactly? Also that sound of the 10" snare is beautiful!
@Jungleritter Thanks for the reply! Keep up the good work! I might also pick up a 13" hi-hats sometimes... 14'' just can be a little to much sometimes. Also the combination of a 10" and 14" snares seems to work verry well... I somtimes combine 13" and 14" ones, but are not always happy with the result...
Yeah, that´s what it is. The bell is a custom cut formerly broken crash cymbal, it doesn´t add to the sound of the chopper but I use it sometimes instead of playing on the hi-hat.
That´s my Sonor Trash Snare. You can look up one of my videos with the title "Sonor Trash Snare" on my channel, this custom build snare drum is featured there.

@Jungleritter lol good shit man when i was in drum line at my high school we did a lot of Paradiddles my drum instructor loved em along with para diddle diddles like a lot of our music like our cadence music was a lot of that
What is the point of the paradiddle here? The hihat figure is a simple string of 16th notes, why not just simply alternate hand it? Or is he using a controlled bounce that bounces exactly on the 16th notes portions of the beat, in order to save energy and eliminate motion?
The paradiddle sticking will always sound different unless you´re playing like a machine, so it gives the string of 16th´s a slightly different feel. But the main reason to use it are the possibilities of moving some of the strokes on different sound sources like the additional snare drum. It simply opens a lot of doors.
