heavy clothing decreases expansion of the bullet but in turn helps penetration. In my hot environment +p bullets expand to quickly in most loadings and don't penetrate far enough for my liking. Speer's gold dot seems to be immune to that happening. I also like federal's hst non +p here in your chosen caliber. I lived in the pacific northwest and carried either +p hst loads in the winter or gold dots.
I would love to see what 230 grain FMJ ball ammo does in a sim test. I carry handloaded 230 grain xtp's in my rock island 1911 they are coming in at around 850 FPS out of a 3.5 inch barrel and around 900 FPS out of my glock 21 SF. thanks for the info I can have somewhat of an idea of what I can expect.
I'd be interested in seeing a test of Double Tap 255gr SWC Keith round @875fps out of a 5" barrel. Should be a very deep penetrator. You do excellent testing videos, thanks! I'm sticking with my preferred Federal 230gr Hydra-Shoks after seeing your video on that round.
I think hornady shot it through a glock 21 at the factory. Polygonal rifleing is always a little faster the conventional even in slightly shorter barrels. The only down side to polygonal rifleing is you can't shoot cheap unkacketed ammo but thats fine since lately the cheapest ammo has pretty much always been jacketed.
@smartguy104 absolutely love poly rifling my p380 kahr gets about 75 fps better than the taurus tcp my friend carries with a shorter barrel with 90 grain xtp 2 shot average of 925 fps vs 850 for his taurus
@tubevideoguy762 Yeah velocity makes a huge difference in expansion. If you watch brassfetcher review of the CCi velocitor you'll notice that the round fired from a rifle expanded and penetrated less do to the fact it was going faster when fired from a rifle while when it was fired from a pistol it overpenetraded and did less damage as a result of not expanding. This is famously known as the Hydro-static effect. Essentially the resistance of water to something passing through it.
@darksamurai73 i know he will get a million views if you test the Grizzly Xtreme 175 +p round.. i can't find a gel test for them wanna see if it will penetrate enough..
@darksamurai73 I agree, a good ballistic gel test would be appreciated for those. there are lots of debates whether or not the have enough penetration.
TN, is the opening of the XTP bigger than the TAP?......Smaller opening in the TAP makes me think it needs more force to open......just my opinion anyway...
someone asks that stupid why 4 pair of denim question every time. read the comments or pay attention to the videos you trolls he has answered that a hundred times!
Oh, wow! My personal choice for carry ammo. I've tested a few rounds in water jugs and gotten extremely consistent expansion. ~.65 every. Single. Round. The petals always expand almost perfectly symmetrically, as well. Nice to see a gel media test is in line with my water jug plinking tests. Look at that wound channel! The XTP may not have the biggest expansion but I believe it to be a very consistent and reliable round.
If you were going to shoot the +P stuff exclusively, I would think that it might be a good idea to move up to the next heavier recoil spring and see if it functions reliably.
Nice I may get this for my Kimber Stainless II. Currently run 185+P Golden Sabres in it because they run flawlessly as well. I think the TAP and XTP are more favorable for 1911's that are more round specific.
Hello of a video brother, I'm a certified police officers in the state of Florida and I believe that every person has the legal and obligating rights to defend his or herself by any means necessary. (Not to mention it would make our jobs little bit easier) your video was very informative and to the point, hats off and kudos to you. But other law enforcement officer I still prefer the 230 grain spear gold dots over anything else.
Thanks for this test! I carry the standard pressure version of this load in my 1911, and I am very happy to see the XTP bullet perform as advertised. I have not seen the +P load locally, so I might have to order a box online and give it a shot, so to speak.
Great ballistics test. I sure do enjoy watching all of your ballistics test. You provide so much detailed information, very impressive. The close ups are just awesome for the clarity is just amazing. Great video!!!
You finally got to them TN!!!!!!!!!! YAY!!!!! So your a liker yeh? Would you carry them? We use to handload the 147gr 9mm.......Was a wicked little round.....Thanks heaps for testing them loved the video was like a little kid waiting for an ice cream
Always enjoy your videos. You, by far, have the best ammo tests I have seen. Easy to understand and to the point. Thank you for the service you provide to us, your viewers. I can tell you put a lot of time and effort into your videos. I salute you, Sir.
Hmmm.... I think if my store was ever out of Gold Dot's, I wouldn't feel too bad about loading up some of these. Thanks, as always, for the great review.
Great video, i currently reload the XTP for Tactical classes i take . Seeing this test gives me a visual of what the bullet is capable of doing in a home defense situation.
Sir, Please consider a test of plain ol' 45ACP hardball as a benchmark I'm not sure if I subscribe to it, but there is a school of thought that feeding reliability far more important than expansion/retention, etc.
I got pulled over today coming home from the range, the cop asked me "Do I have any *gulp* weapons inside my motor vehicle?" He gulped as he looked in the back seat, ya I had 8 rifle cases with me, 10 pistol cases with me and 2 pistols on me the cop then asked "Why do you have better firepower then we keep in our cruisers?" I simply replied "Because mine wasn't paid with tax payers money and I make sure all of mine work better then half of the police force" Good test as always
Has nothing to do with pants. IWBA, International Wound Ballistics Association standard, and my thread count is also close to their preferred specs. Simulates heavy clothing, somewhat of a worse-case scenario.
@tdub9899 If a bad guy had a Carhart coat on and a jean shirt with a t-shirt on underneath, that is alot of material to go through. Hence the 4 layers of denim in testing.
Thanks for the great tests. I'd love to see some rifle/shotgun testing as well, comparing fragmentation/penetration of different defensive rifle loads, as well as the penetration/spread (shot) or penetration/expansion (slug) of various shotgun loads. I imagine this requires a bit larger block of the testing media, though?
The question is, do you really want that controlled expansion? Or do you want the most violently expanding bullet that you can get? Impressive control in that design though, looks nasty too.
It seems like this bullet functions perfectly. It is odd to see a self-defense round without a nickel plated case though. It clearly doesn't effect the round, but do they do this because of cost? Or is there some other reason?
clearly the best ammo testing out there man.so Here is the 6million dollar question. Since you have tested all kinds of rounds. what are your favorites In a concealed carry size gun?(.38/.357,.380 9mm.40 .45?) and what are your favorite rounds to carry for them?
@VicariousReality7 567 joules will move a 150 pound man back about 4 feet. (W=FxD) A .22 caliber would move the same man 3/4" Does that put it into perspective for you? :)
@tnoutdoors9 Since you have been doing these tests for a while now, would it be possible for you to give us a review or side-by-side comparison of the slugs you retrieved from the gel? That is if you save them, I know I would.
I've been asked that previously. They are all over the place; on my desk, in the ammo box, nightstand, garage workbench, top of the toilet tank (staring at slugs is better than reading). Just imagine "The Thinker" statue sitting on the throne staring at a 230 gr Hornady XTP, LOL.
It would be ALOT of work to compile those AND the results from whatever media was used since 2009.....water, wetpack, and the SIM-TEST. I almost started the project earlier this year but held back.
With the inconsistent velocity I would like to know just what round was fired for the test shot. Looks like it could have opened more. Any chance of setting up the chrono infront of the block?
It is easier to setup the chrony outside with a solid backstop and knock out the 5 shots in a few minutes. The first shot is cold bore. I take a photo of the Chrony after each shot; the low 874 fps reading was shot #3, and the 930 high mark was shot #1. My five-shot averages are usually within 7% of advertised regardless of caliber. The expansion here was within Hornady's specs. As of this upload date, I'm not finding other gel test videos online for this load.
I need clear gel blocks for .223. There is no way I can recover fragments or trace a bullet path from .223 using this media; can't see it. I'm working on it.......
@ALAPINO The only 'defensive ammo' which should fragment comes out of a rifle. Handgun bullets which are designed to fragment in flesh give you a couple inches of penetration at best, and should be avoided. They sure do blow up water jugs spectacularly, but unless you're being attacked by rabid water jugs, even FMJ is a better choice.
Your HD closeups of the expanded bullet are a real thing of beauty to a guy who used to gaze into the ammunition cabinets at the clear plastic ammunition boxes at hardware stores as a child, imagining what it would be like to experience the forbidden pleasure of shooting a real gun. An expanded hollow point is just as beautiful as any gemstone or wildflower.
The folks in the white coats should be at your door any moment. Expect to spend the remainder of your day sedated and being questioned under a bright light, LOL. Seriously, I never did what you have described, however, my face was usually glued to the expanded bullet photos in gun magazines. Our flashback scenarios must be the embryonic stages of becoming an ammo geek!
@tnoutdoors Then you more than likely also had a collection of empty brass and shot shells lined up on the window sill in your room when you were very young.
Thanks for the review. I handload these +p and was wondering about performance in gel. Because of the shape, they feed much more reliably than any other 45 acp that I have tried.
Truly an interesting round. I currently have these in my G21. They are very accurate out of my guns & in my experiences, Hornady is pretty consistent, too. I was surprised by the velocity numbers, though. I clocked higher #s w/my G21. I wonder if it's a matter of the barrel rifling?
I've heard that Glocks could produce higher velocities due to the polygonal rifling, more gas behind the bullet. Could you share with us your velocities from the G21?
@tnoutdoors9 I ended up w/a 3 shot avg. of 933 fps from an older Gen 3 G21/4.5 in barrel. That's still a little shy from the advertized, but I think still deserves to be in the ballpark for a +P load vs. a standard velocity offering. This is why I enjoy your videos because we all can learn/remember that you never know what you'll end up with, until you shoot it. At either velocity, if one is unfortunate enough to end up on the business end of one of these, its gonna be a bad day!
Thanks for sharing your info. Agreed, this load could impact the lifestyle of someone who insists on inflicting bodily harm on others. The .45 ACP.......230 grains of attitude adjustment.
heavy clothing decreases expansion of the bullet but in turn helps penetration. In my hot environment +p bullets expand to quickly in most loadings and don't penetrate far enough for my liking. @theKGB65

@TheGunfighter45acp

@TheGunfighter45acp
Thanks for sharing your info. Agreed, this load could impact the lifestyle of someone who insists on inflicting bodily harm on others. The .45 ACP.......230 grains of attitude adjustment.
