I was 14 years old and i couldn't grow a mustache at all in 1984 watching Magnum P.I. and let me tell you it was one of my favorite shows of the 80's as well as the A-Team, Miami Vice and Knight Rider and Tom Selleck was one of my role models growing up as a teenager back then so much that i wanted to be like him and before i knew it 3 years later at age 17 i had a full grown real mustache thick as Tom Selleck in 11th grade in High School no joke, I'm serious. Now 40yrs old with a thin goatee ;)

Its really intetesting if you listen to the original, full-length version of the theme song before/after the tv version. A couple things I noticed:

1. The full-length version is at least a whole step lower in key than the tv version (which jumps out at you like a tiger hopped-up on '80's era cocaine).

2. While the guitar player is the same the tones are noticeably different. The full-length version is nearly a clean tone with just a touch of reverb while the tv version drops the verb, dials

They like to use existing songs because it's ultimately cheaper than having a guy compose an elaborate theme and when they do get a guy to compose a theme opening montages are usually cut down so that networks can fit in more commerical breaks for things that America doesn't want and doesn't need.
