I saw them live in a tiny club in Canada. This was the sixties and everyone was stoned. The Softies always sounded best that was Their "Third" album took progressive rock to new heights -- or depths, depending on your point of view. IMO their musical integrity (no compromise with commercialism) matched their brilliance.
Wow - I only have one Soft Machine album, Rubber Riff, and it's elevator music compared to this. I guess I'd better go back little ways to sample some more of them.
@trojanlol you should be my friend!!!!! not on the internet, but in real life... we could have some shrooms and trip to decent psychedelic and melodic prog! x
@charlenesoraia ^^ ok, if I come to USA one day, I'll call you for the shrooms ^^, always wished I had "psyche friend". (Did you listen to "thoughts of emerlist davjack" by the nice ? Great album btw)
Saw these guys twice in the sixties supporting Hendrix. They had a squiggly oil light show that completely enveloped the band. They were amazing. Went out and found the first album. Great banding. Thanks so much for posting this. It's interesting to actually be able to see them perform in light.
Sorry, Flum is swedish and means something like, diffuse, unclear, hard to define, mellow, unambitious. Hope this explains something. What about your english by the way? Duul was never as well known as the band they influenced, but wo d fk.
UNBELIEVABLE! The ''gears'' album is one of my faves of all time and to see this early live footage is a treat! What's with Mr. Ayers ''Clockwork Orange'' look? Wild stuff!
There's some vid clips incl Why are we Sleeping on Soft Machine Early Songs Part 2, but for my money, Siroen's vid (non SM) 1972 version for French tv, takes the biscuit.
Kevin A + Steve Hillage (guitar) + Archie Leggett (bass)...

I would have loved to see them live- they came to Phoenix, but my mother thought I was too young to see them. Damn.

I never thought much of Art Rock most Prog groups make it fairly easy to hate 'em.
But this performance is quite brillant!

Musicians on acid... a Coltrane jam... lots of nuggets to mine and incredibly interesting, but it just doesn't hang together for the "unaltered" mind.
But isn't that where raw genius begins?
djtangman 3 years ago
They were probably very influential on early prog (like Yes) and metal (Deep Purple.)

totally on lsd, isn't it? I guess they were very underground by those days. Now, I think they are an historic document, but very hard to understand.
