  • I saw them live in a tiny club in Canada. This was the sixties and everyone was stoned. The Softies always sounded best that was Their "Third" album took progressive rock to new heights -- or depths, depending on your point of view. IMO their musical integrity (no compromise with commercialism) matched their brilliance.

  • LSD !

  • I would have loved to see them live- they came to Phoenix, but my mother thought I was too young to see them. Damn.

  • where's Kevin Ayres?

  • Wow - I only have one Soft Machine album, Rubber Riff, and it's elevator music compared to this. I guess I'd better go back little ways to sample some more of them.

  • @wardka lok for anything that has Robert Wyatt in the group and you won't go wrong

  • high as kites !

  • I never thought much of Art Rock most Prog groups make it fairly easy to hate 'em.

But this performance is quite brillant!

  • Now go watch Barrett's Interstellar Overdrive, and some early Can. I command you!

  • ahah, add some hendrix, some jefferson airplane, few shrooms and you're ready from a good trip :p

  • @trojanlol you should be my friend!!!!! not on the internet, but in real life... we could have some shrooms and trip to decent psychedelic and melodic prog! x

  • @charlenesoraia ^^ ok, if I come to USA one day, I'll call you for the shrooms ^^, always wished I had "psyche friend". (Did you listen to "thoughts of emerlist davjack" by the nice ? Great album btw)

  • these guys were awesome tho. Like their albums are awesome!

  • Holy crap these guys TOTALLY influenced Yes.

  • wow a meletron!

  • Thanks for posting !!!! I love the orginal lineup!!!

  • i love psychedelic progressive rock!

  • Saw these guys twice in the sixties supporting Hendrix. They had a squiggly oil light show that completely enveloped the band. They were amazing. Went out and found the first album. Great banding. Thanks so much for posting this. It's interesting to actually be able to see them perform in light.

  • no more drugs for this band

  • Musicians on acid... a Coltrane jam... lots of nuggets to mine and incredibly interesting, but it just doesn't hang together for the "unaltered" mind.

But isn't that where raw genius begins?

  • They were probably very influential on early prog (like Yes) and metal (Deep Purple.)

  • Great clip! For fans of Deerhoof as well!

  • The keyboard player's hairstyle is about to explode.

  • hi me name is chng.

  • totally on lsd, isn't it? I guess they were very underground by those days. Now, I think they are an historic document, but very hard to understand.

  • Wow this seems so ahead of it's time, kind of reminds me of lighting bolt.

  • Daaaaammmnnnnn!! That original lineup put it into gear there...with a degree of accessibility fused into their experimentation..nice find!

  • If you like this kind of flum rock, check out Amon Duul

  • Wot da fok is flum ?

You gotta weird way to recommend your

fave bands.DÜÜL is cööl though «d-_-b»

  • Sorry, Flum is swedish and means something like, diffuse, unclear, hard to define, mellow, unambitious. Hope this explains something. What about your english by the way? Duul was never as well known as the band they influenced, but wo d fk.

  • lOvE mAkEs SwEeT mUsIc,YEAHHH !

  • Is there anymore of this footgae floating about?I hope so

  • Robert Wyatt = AWESOME drummer and singer!!! + he's such a little hottie in this vid!!! %-PPP

Thanks a lot, beyondthebeat, you made my day!!!...

  • UNBELIEVABLE! The ''gears'' album is one of my faves of all time and to see this early live footage is a treat! What's with Mr. Ayers ''Clockwork Orange'' look? Wild stuff!

  • heavy duty! does anyone have why are we sleeping??

  • There's some vid clips incl Why are we Sleeping on Soft Machine Early Songs Part 2, but for my money, Siroen's vid (non SM) 1972 version for French tv, takes the biscuit.

Kevin A + Steve Hillage (guitar) + Archie Leggett (bass)...

    I LIKE it !!!!

  • WOW!!!! I LOVE THIS!!!

  • if you like this you'll love oneida

  • Ayers/Ratledge/Wyatt....the Volume 1 lineup...Plus Belle Qu'Un Poubelle.

  • Wow. Wow. Wow.

    W O W!

  • A classic from the age of psychedelia...thank you! Look at the make-up on Kevin Ayers!

  • These dudes should have done the soundtrack to Kubrick's A CLOCKWORK ORANGE. Not that there's anything wrong with Walter/Wendy Carlos...

  • Great! Thanx to mr. Beyoundthebeat for posting this rare SM stuff

  • ABSOLUTELY FANTASTICALLY SOFTMACHINERIES!

But yeah...it looks like it should be longer (even when taking into account the other bit you posted)...still priceless!

who's next?? Syd in full psychedelic colours??

  • Awesome...that was "psychedelic swingin' London" for ya!

  • Never seen this clip before. it's touching to see Robert Wyatt playing with his unreachable drumming and vocal style.

many thanks for posting the video

  • Hope for happiness, hope for happiness happiness......

  • Hoped for it.

  • How can one see the rest of this?
