@karatepencilcase well there is a series circuit inside the torch. The circuit comprises of the two battery (cells) a switch, the lamp and most importantly a diode. The diode as we all know from GCSE physics only lets current flow in one way.

However this is only safe for cheap torches, not sure about more complex systems

It doesn't work in this case because the batteries don't connect as the ends are the wrong shape to contact the metal terminals. The bulb is just a wire that heats up anyway

Actually the guy put 2 AA batteries in the same direction- No opposing forces. The light did not turn on because either 1)the contacts were not meant for the batteries to sit in backwards or 2) the torch was using an LED (Light Emitting Diode) and like with all Diodes...polarity matters.

The forward voltage of white LED's are often between 2.8 and 4v. This is totally possible to have a 3v LED, especially one meant for a light duty cycle, such as a flash light.
