Should have won a few in 95 but for shitty reliability, I nearly cried at the nurburgring result, SO close to an epic win and He was hunting down Shuey for another potentially awesome one at Suzuka when the car shit itself.
I'd love him to have stayed at ferrari and gone head to head with MS, he'd have given him more headaches than Irvine.
Ferrari wanted to keep him. Alesi didn't like Schumacher very much and probably knew he was going to sign a contract to become the designated number 2 driver. When Schumacher's seat in Benetton became available Alesi saw his chance to finally excel in a good car. Sadly the Benetton had been designed with Schumacher's driving style in mind (Herbert hated it in 1995) and Williams made possibly the best car they ever made (a record 12 wins in a season for them)
if he would have been not so unluky he could have won the world championship in 1995... if you examinate all the races he was almost always the faster! I love this driver!
@Skallagrim77 I never thought anybody else would have believe that. I made my numbers myself back in 95 and he would have been in a position to fight for the WC if not for the reliability of his car. He retired while in 1st or 2nd place 5 times: spain, belgium, italy, japan and monaco where Brundle made him crash. If he wouldn't have retired in all those races, Ferrari could have raised their game and he would have been in contention to win the WC. If if if.
jean is the legend even though he never win WDC n 1 race win only...the best jean battle on track has 2 b the duel between senna in USA GP 1990...that was the 1st ever sign he can bcum potential champion one day which didnt happen sadly damm

Take a wet track, each driver in the same car with no electronics and guess which one will win....this french guy! He was driving with his heart and his balls (huge ones...) for the spectators....that's why he has got so many fans!
I cried during the podium at Montreal 95 and I aint an emotional bloke, by far and a way my favourite race driver of all time whose results don't tell the full story.
Unreliable at times, but mostly an amazingly fast driver with car control to rival Gille Villeneves. Italian blood sent him to Ferrari, which surely prevented him winning at leat one title with the Williams team, who also made him an offer for the 1991 season.
Let me guess ? You've never seen him drive, because you're 12 ... Anyway, this was one of the best drivers ever, to me at least. He got more out of that crap Ferrari they used to give him then anybody ever could. Not even Schuey.
This is not the field for numbers. Being a winner is mainly heart, personality, relationship with the fans. Alesi won only a race but knew perfectly how to light the italian people. In numbers maybe is one of the least successfull Ferrari drivers but absolutely EVERYBODY loved him. In that period Ferraris were useless and broke all the time, he had talent so he could leave to McLaren or Williams. But he didn't. And for people who say "Winner is who wins a lot of races" I say Gilles Villeneuve..

And about iraklilabadze and his comments, he is a loser. Yes, he is. And still is better than some other "winners" like Hill and J.Villeneuve, who completely DISSAPEARED or did close to nothing after winning world championships. But wait, he won 1 race, 1 race more than you iraklilabadze, so he may be a winner and you a LOSER. :)
Correct, If I WAS a driver. But I'm an humble italian journalist, and I have to write what I see. Yesterday I beat my sister in a tennis match: did Alesi ever beat my sister in tennis court? No, I guess. I won one particular match more than Jean. So, in that field, I am the winner, and he is the loser.
Ok, I'm sorry and I see your point. Fact is: "Alesi is a winner because he won a race". He is statistically a loser because he was never a WC. If you think like this, 29 people who won WC are winners and you are calling everybody else a loser?
I don't think so. On statistics Alesi is not the best, but he certainly wasn't a loser.
Everybody knows that Italian journalists are utter retards and quite possibly they are the least informed bunch of people in the world as far as F1 goes. Why don't you guys ever critisize Ferrari as a team? Yes, exactly: 4th, 3rd... when first? He has driven Ferrari and Benetton, not Minardi or another low-budget team. Johnny Herbert - for sure not an universal champion - won more: two gp. Jean reached the top of the podium just in Canada '95, in his whole career. Is he a winner? I would think twice before to say it...
and how many times was alesi about to win a race and his car failed him? spa 91,94; monza 94,95,97; monaco 96; belgium 95; japan 95
and not to mention all the points and podiums he could have gotten with better reliablity,
also wasn't alesi racing with senna and prost in 1990 while driving an underpowered tyrell-ford? they were still using manual shifting that year and his team-mate was 2 to 3 seconds per lap slower then him.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
"Was Alesi about to win" doesn't mean to win. Herbert was just an example: a fairish driver who won more than your beloved Jean. Was Benetton B95 so superior compared to Ferrari in that year? I don't think so, but Schumacher was for the second time world champion. In Italy we say "the luckiness is blind, but the unluckiness has a great vision". Alesi's case?
so it was alesi's fault that some of his cars failed him? and how do you explain that alesi was much faster then herbert when they drove the same car?
the b195 was better then the 412t2 both aerodinamically and reliability wise, plus schumacher was always the number 1 driver and the team worked around him, alesi and berger shared equal status
alesi and herbert were at sauber in 98 and alesi was much faster then herbert!
using a mediocre car he finished 3rd in the rain at spa and qualified 2nd in the rain in austria! what did herbert do that year?
and when did alesi have a championship winning car? the 95 ferrari was the only car he drove that with better reliability and slightly better aero would have challenged for the championship
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You are a fan. And being a fan obfuscates the logical reasoning. Numbers speak, it's simple. How many times Ayrton's car failed him? But he became Senna, the greatest. Alesi: 201 gp, 1 victory. Herbert: 161 gp, 3 victories. I don't need more. I don't care about "he finished 3rd in the rain at Spa". I look to the results. Emotions, sorry if I tell you, do not count 10 points in world championship.
You know who's similar to Alesi in terms of a career (good career, but no championship), either?
A slightly better performing driver than Alesi, named Riccardo Patrese. That guy's not a loser, though he was never world champion (though in 1992 he barely edged out Senna for Runner-Up.)
Patrese was a fun driver to watch. Guy has 256 starts-- a record I don't think will be broken for a very, very long time.
I agree with you. Riccardo was a splendid second driver, an honest laborer appreciated and respected. But that is my point: Patrese did his work, without infamy, without laudation. Jean, with his enormous talent, has had a disappointing career.
Jean tried his hardest that he could. That Ferrari in the early and mid 1990s was an attrocious car. It had a powerful V12 but the bodywork was terrible. They kept changing designers every year.
Before Alain Prost was fired in 1991, he said the Ferrari's handling was like "an 18 wheeler".
Ferrari in the early 90s was not the team it is today, where the 90s were dominated by Williams and McLaren. In fact, you could probably argue that Alesi and Berger helped cement Schumacher's success there.
I'm not sure. The first time Micheal tried the V12 engine and Ferrari at Mugello, after 40 laps, he got out from the car and said: "Is it possible that Ferrari in those years has won just two gp, with such engine?".
do you not consider for a second that the comment was made 2 make himself look better,a PR action? all the experts at the time said that having a v12 in 1995's 3.0 engine rules was a disadvantage rather than an advantage because of its greater fuel consumption and lesser driveability. yes it was a joy to hear and maybe a fun to drive but in speed+reliability terms it wasnt an advantage(in fact Ferrari wanted to switch to V10 engine even before or during the season but didnt prepare it in time.
Well, Alesi, Berger always said, that the chasis was great, but the engine V12 lost that year his advantage of great power against the weight, cause it was restricted to 3.0litre and it was too much kg´s on the car...
I could sum it all up for Alesi. He seemed always to be in the wrong team at the wrong time. He had the choice for 1991 to go to Ferrari or Williams, he chose the wrong path. When he came to Benneton in 96, the party was over, and the rest is history. realy a fabulous natural driver, but I think that he lacked the tech development that you need to make a car evolve. But i miss him greatly, realy a lion of a driver.
As much as I wanted Alesi 2 stay in Ferrari in 1996 I knew it wasnt possible. They were considered 2 top drivers in the world at the time and Alesi said there's no way for him 2 stay coz Shumacher demanded number 1 status and Ferrari had no choise but to agree. I mean do you imagine Jean as number 2? Everyone including Michael knows that on raw speed Alesi was a match 4 Schum. He's not Brundle or Patrese.
Alesi was in his best form from 1989 - 1993. At the start of 1994 he had a very big testing accident and, in my opinion, he was never quite the same driver after that.
He still had some wonderful runs (e.g. Suzuka, 1995) but never really had his old edge after that.
Jean Alesi was my favorite driver in F1 of all time. I just magically became transfixed by his panache and driving style as soon as I saw him race back in 1990 when I was 8.
He was absolutely magical in the rain. I can still remember his run in 1995 in Japan where he was setting fast lap after fast lap, lopping huge chunks off of Schumacher's lead, and then his engine sadly blew.
For me Jean is the only driver in the same league as Gilles, its fiiting JA got to be the last driver of #27 and of course to get his win in that car. I'm watching old races in the off-season, starting with Jean's debut in 88 in the Tyrell, he was immediately on the pace. Forza Alesi.
he went for the legend and the legend ruined his career. he was a great driver (especially in rain). unfortunately his stats don't reflect the true talent that he was..
Maybe, he wonted to show-I am good....look at mansell 92,prost 93 still there are some discussions that they won only thanks to the williams-renault.Maybe he wonted the hard way to show us that he is not like that
Cracking video , always liked Jean - such a shame he couldnty make the most of the massive natural talent he clearly had.A driver that always looks fast and on the edge.Great Choice of song too!!!! Be ba ba bada bo :)

the b195 was better then the 412t2 both aerodinamically and reliability wise, plus schumacher was always the number 1 driver and the team worked around him, alesi and berger shared equal status
robertman0011 3 years ago
alesi and herbert were at sauber in 98 and alesi was much faster then herbert!
using a mediocre car he finished 3rd in the rain at spa and qualified 2nd in the rain in austria! what did herbert do that year?
and when did alesi have a championship winning car? the 95 ferrari was the only car he drove that with better reliability and slightly better aero would have challenged for the championship

This comment has received too many negative votes show
You are a fan. Emotions, sorry if I tell you, do not count 10 points in world championship.
iraklilabadze 3 years ago
schumacher and prost both have more race victories then senna, so are they faster then him?
robertman0011 3 years ago 4
Why in Italy Ferrari fans allways belive that failures are for the drivers...?
Tomreal 3 years ago
He was a fantastic driver. Now, drivers like Luca Badoaer, Aguri Suzuki, and Ivan Capelli were bad.
Alesi has 1 win, over 200 starts (that's a milestone, only like six drivers have that,) and an absolute load of points.
BTW, he had more driver points in his total career than Johnny Herbert had in his.
Was he world championship quality? Most definitely. Did he achieve that status? Sadly, no.
But you don't have to be a champion in the points to be a hero to the people.
jregley 3 years ago
You know who's similar to Alesi in terms of a career (good career, but no championship), either?
A slightly better performing driver than Alesi, named Riccardo Patrese. That guy's not a loser, though he was never world champion (though in 1992 he barely edged out Senna for Runner-Up.)
Patrese was a fun driver to watch. Guy has 256 starts-- a record I don't think will be broken for a very, very long time.
jregley 3 years ago

In fact, you could probably argue that Alesi and Berger helped cement Schumacher's success there.
jregley 3 years ago 3
I'm not sure. The first time Micheal tried the V12 engine and Ferrari at Mugello, after 40 laps, he got out from the car and said: "Is it possible that Ferrari in those years has won just two gp, with such engine?".
iraklilabadze 3 years ago
do you not consider for a second that the comment was made 2 make himself look better,a PR action? all the experts at the time said that having a v12 in 1995's 3.0 engine rules was a disadvantage rather than an advantage because of its greater fuel consumption and lesser driveability. yes it was a joy to hear and maybe a fun to drive but in speed+reliability terms it wasnt an advantage(in fact Ferrari wanted to switch to V10 engine even before or during the season but didnt prepare it in time.
Montreal95 3 years ago
Ferrari always made powerful engines. The 1995 engine might have been brilliant but the chassis and reliabilty was shite
AlexDeLarge90 3 years ago

"Guy has 256 starts-- a record I don't think will be broken for a very, very long time."
Or 25th May this year, by Rubens Barrichello.
anomonimus 3 years ago
It's Riccardo Patrese that has 256 starts. Alesi is currently 8'th with 201 starts. Berger is 5'th with 210 starts.

You can't say it any better than Forza Alesi...a true star and one hell of a driver - his knife-edge stuff is up there with the greats!

french F3,F3000 doesnt count then? are you able 2 "like" a driver only if he was F1 champ? in other words:are you mad?
Montreal95 3 years ago
Great driver and great person !
All Ferrari's fans still love him !
Ferrari should have kept him in 1996, as team mate of Michael !
That would have been a great team, plus they are friends so i think they would have been happy to stay in the same team together, shame.
steferrari2 4 years ago 4
As much as I wanted Alesi 2 stay in Ferrari in 1996 I knew it wasnt possible. They were considered 2 top drivers in the world at the time and Alesi said there's no way for him 2 stay coz Shumacher demanded number 1 status and Ferrari had no choise but to agree. I mean do you imagine Jean as number 2? Everyone including Michael knows that on raw speed Alesi was a match 4 Schum. He's not Brundle or Patrese.
Montreal95 4 years ago 3
Alesi was in his best form from 1989 - 1993. At the start of 1994 he had a very big testing accident and, in my opinion, he was never quite the same driver after that.
He still had some wonderful runs (e.g. Suzuka, 1995) but never really had his old edge after that.

Still one of the great names in F1
he was my favorite back in his ferrari-veteran-days #27ruled
loved his fighting driving style
I always hated it when the ferrari v-12 was blowing up in good positions position(like barca95)

To have an idea how much bad luck he had, just remember how often he could have won at Monza without bad luck: 1994, 1995, 1997.
Very sad that he never was able to sit in a real good car.

alesi used to overtake more drivers in a single season then some drivers in a whole career.

Jean Alesi was my favorite driver in F1 of all time. I just magically became transfixed by his panache and driving style as soon as I saw him race back in 1990 when I was 8.
He was absolutely magical in the rain. I can still remember his run in 1995 in Japan where he was setting fast lap after fast lap, lopping huge chunks off of Schumacher's lead, and then his engine sadly blew.
jregley 4 years ago 3
For me Jean is the only driver in the same league as Gilles, its fiiting JA got to be the last driver of #27 and of course to get his win in that car. I'm watching old races in the off-season, starting with Jean's debut in 88 in the Tyrell, he was immediately on the pace. Forza Alesi.

They don't drive this way anymore.
I liked his opposite lock driving in the wet.

He could have gone to Williams for 1991, but chose Ferrari instead - His wins tally could have been a lot different.
android965 4 years ago
he went for the legend and the legend ruined his career. he was a great driver (especially in rain). unfortunately his stats don't reflect the true talent that he was..

Maybe, he wonted to show-I am good....look at mansell 92,prost 93 still there are some discussions that they won only thanks to the williams-renault.Maybe he wonted the hard way to show us that he is not like that
