  • I'm not saying that it's bad; if you like the singer, I would really like this. I just don't. If I want it, I would listen to Springstreen. The comp isn't wrong, their voices are very similar. The song itself though, this one at least, is very good.

  • any way to get the piano music for this song?

  • He was drunk and exhausted, but he was critically acclaimed and respected...

  • really 4 real i am not trying to be a dick but damn this is weird shit

  • So much of this band output is about drugs. I think it keeps them from being as popular as they should be. I love them though.

  • @ignatzly I doubt that drugs have anything to do with it. There are alot of hoops that you have to jump through to become popular...

  • the song is about great american poet John Berryman who comitted a suicide by jumping from the Washington Avenue Bridge ..."We all come down and drown in the Mississippi River." I love this lyrics...

  • ahhh love this song.:) amaaazzzziiinnngg.:)

  • She was a really cool kisser and she wasn't all that strict of a Christian.

  • tis song remind me of my youth i love this song

    Hold Steady Forever

  • lmao best video ever

  • A lot of Springsteen similarity. A bit overhyped, but not bad(?).

  • Saw these guys a week ago in Brooklyn, and I have listened to Stay Positive and Boys and Girls in America about eighteen times each since then. I like this song so much that I get bummed out when it ends. Just awesome.

  • it's so good. I saw them in concert twice. I might see em a third time.

  • u suck

  • Nah, Hold Steady isn't about the music anyway, it's about the story. Start from Lifter Puller, and then work forward, the music is just a container to get the stories into the space. Springsteen is a musician, Finn is a musical novelist. Big difference.

  • mikewofsey, I agree except I find Srpingsteen more of a celebrity than a musician now. Finn is possessed of an epic mind...for real.

  • these guys are so much fun.

  • craig is fucking adorable lol.

  • love the opening line.

  • how can you not? such a great book...

and I love how the bassist is reading the Dream Songs, seeing as this song is like a giant John Berryman tribute

  • i love the RUSH shirt

  • I love all the gratuitous Twin Cities references. They remind me of a great year, baseball, and my apartment right on the Mississippi River. Jeez, I actually miss Minnesota..

  • How could you not? I work right on Washington, I can walk across the street and talk to the river.

  • I love the reference to Jack Kerouac.

  • "i don't understand why we can just get these dubbed" CLASSIC!

  • Absolutuely a great song, I can really connect with it. Also, what a great video it all seems to culminate in something almost better than sex

  • love

  • ahaha

thats one of the best videos cause its not a load of sh** like all other vids

  • This band is like Elvis Costello leading the E Street band in the 70's -in the best way imaginable. Great CD, also has some Thin Lizzy tunes influence on one tune.

  • Absolutley!! great critic!!

  • OMG this is this the most exciting band i have seen since ATDI

  • the music is really good, but the leadsinger sucks... sry xD

  • you must be high...really really high

  • The Hold Steady are the most exciting band in the world today..ive been a buyer in the music biz for 3 decades..and these guys remind of the excitement of the punk days! THE BELFAST GYPSY

  • "loved the golden gofers but hated all the drawn out winters." this song makes me think of tavern life in the upper midwest. twincies, milwaukee, chicago. makin the winter trips to your corner bar.

  • I'll kill you.

  • i agree, totally justified... franz is a god among men

  • LOL

  • AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • MARIO!!!

  • this band is one of the only ones that are original and fucking rule :D:D:D:D:D:D

  • The hold steady are good because the songs they write seem to be about themselves. They write songs that seem to be about partying in minneapolis when they were teenagers. They sound like a bunch of suburban dads trying to rekindle thier youth by making a band. Which is why they're so cool.

  • Cool songs cool band I want to hang out with these guys. And that other song about the cutters is even better

  • On the road!

  • kerouac ftw

  • im stuck between station =P

  • "I don't understand why we can't get these dubbed"...because you're the Hold Steady, man!

  • i heart the hold steady!!!!!

  • i heart the hold steady!!!!!

  • This song is 100% rock. No more rock can fit into this song! Good work Hold Steady!

  • What a band. I saw them supporting the countings crow at Liverpool and they were awesome.

  • Sounds like a different mix than the album version.

  • This is quite possibly the best song written this decade. My God, how did these guys get so awesome?

  • a great rockandroll band from the new era!!

  • Just when I almost gave up hope on contempary American Rock !

  • These are rocking live!!! they played in our town in stoke - on- trent and are fucknig amazing!!!

  • dude the vid was great and somewhat funny but ive been playing this song over and over on my guitar and playing it with my ipod

  • awesome song

  • man i nusaually listen to country but this is a great band and a amazing saong..CASE IH

  • The Boss #2

  • I love this band. Separation Sunday and Boys And Girls in America are two of my all-time favorite CDs. And this is a great song.

  • davey solaris must listen to emo.

  • Davey there are plenty of other terrible bands to rant on.. this is american rock and roll... not some interpol bullshit... all though i like interpol. you get me?

  • dude, who cares if he just mimes? they guy's got a killer voice, let him play around with a guitar if he wants.

  • boys and girls in america is definitely my favorite album of the past year and definitely one of my top favorite albums ever...i really don't understand why they arent more well known either.

  • saw them in carlisle last week, small club, about 150 people there...why are these guys not global superstars? I love the signature weird double-time handclapping thing, and the way he sings the previous line into the audience away from the mic so all you hear is nothing but see him mouthing the words! amazing gig. A stripped down version of E Street band from 1975. amazing.

  • I agree! You can blame it on the music industry! They have lost touch! These guys are Springsteen, Elvis costello & Joe cocker all wrapped up in one!

  • this guy actualy puts meaning in his song instead of pointless shouting

  • saw this band at T in the Park and they were majik

  • Dance Craig, dance.

  • Could they be any hotter.

As for the song and video, awesome.

  • that line about falling into the Mississippi river seems kind of odd now.

  • Yeah.. Originally its a reference to John Berryman, the poet who committed suicide by jumping off the Washington Avenue bridge 2 down from the I35W.

theonion's article two years ago "State Of Minnesota Too Polite To Ask For Federal Funding" Is pretty awkward too.

  • Pfft, buck up. You can't change art because of events that happened after it. I went over that bridge shortly before that happened, and I know it could have easily been me in one of those cars, but there's no way that I feel awkward or odd about a lyric.

  • I can't wait to see The Hold Steady at Lollapalooza this year!

  • Amazing band, amazing song, can't wait to see them at leeds fest.

  • Who? You?

  • yea they are pretty happy ppl

  • have they got an official youtube profile. They were awesome at oxegen!

  • The drummer's wearing a Rush - Hemispheres World Tour 1978 t-shirt!!! AWESOME!

  • Love this song

    thanks

  • Wasn't Mr Finn originally in the replacements?

  • No, though he was in Lifter Puller for a few years.

  • Can't wait to see them at Summer Sundae in August

  • Love it.

  • they remind me of Husker Du and earily soul alysm!!! the new era of rock and roll...

  • Well, they are from Minneapolis, eh?

  • No, you dumbass. They're from New York.

  • Apparently you're the dumbass. Craig Finn is originally from Minnesota.

  • Some of the members are orignally from Minnesota

  • Thats true. There from the twin cities, if you ever listened to the lyrics they talk about it a lot.

  • the singer reminds me of randy newman...

  • rock is dead

    rest in peace

  • long live paper!

  • and scissors!!!

  • hhehehe... the ending makes sense... could you imagine, the old recording methods, oh my... this is one of my favorites on this album :)

  • The future of rock and roll

  • It seems the future is, once again, the past.

    Good song though.

  • awesome. just plain awesome.

  • amazing song/band/video
