So very haunting... If only he would have know this single short monologue would be the one thing his fans could hear him conversely say. Maybe, just maybe he would have given us a little more.. express some deeper thoughts and ideas, but thats neither here nor there. Fact is, this is all we have and despite the lack of significance I'm eternally grateful just to merely hear him speak words, talk just like a normal person. What a truly individual original he was and shall live forever with me.
I started reading the first few pages of 'Pink Moon' in the '33 1/3' series of books (this one in particular was by Amanda Petrusich) and saw that the author had quoted Nick as saying, "I think there's something extraordinarily nice about seeing the doorknob before one goes to bed.." Doorknob?? It's 'dawn up.' She's the knob. Needless to say, I immediately returned it to its resting place on the shelf.
I find myself wishing he'd continued straying from the point, particularly 1:37 - 1:48. I think the tangent he started there could have been very telling. :(
Can you imagine if Nick Drake knew that this small rant would later become the worlds only perception of how nick truly was, how he conversed in his way. and that snicker at the end, how eerie is that!
Good to hear this in a clearer format... it's been around for years on various recorded cassettes but never as audible as this. Or as comprehensible, come to that...
@SlowNews it might not be a record or radio though, as you can here it come and go. likely it is a bleed-over from a previous recording on the same reel-to-reel tape. old tapes like that had to be erased manually, and if not done properly or simply recorded over, bits of the previous recording would "bleed" through. its an interesting phenomenon of magnetic tape though horribly annoying if you are trying to get a clean recording.
@Putaspellonyou i think "bleeding" actually ads to the recording in its accidental background context gives it an extra sadness and pathos it might lack otherwise.
what a wonderful voice Uppercrust .!!!!!So terribly sad he left so soon. Beautiful soul. He deserved so much more.

Amazing to hear Nicks thoughts as he is something of a mystery outside of his music. What's the record Nick is playing just before he says goodnight?
SlowNews 8 months ago
@SlowNews
Hi there!
It's "You Don't Have To Be a Baby To Cry" by Frank Ifield, a popular tune of the day
you can find the lyrics online if you care to, as it is a country western standard now
Hope this helps! :)
