@DuskbatRabbit No, but I would guess that fired from a carbine as this ammo was designed for, it would expand. If I come across a .357 Mag carbine to use for testing I will try it out.
I ran this ammo threw my .44 super black hawk last year durring deer season, Had great groups out to 100yds, the end of my comfortable shooting range (I should mention that the revolver is scoped and I did take a few shots out to 150 yds and could still hold a paper plat but was out of my comfortable shooting range) the one deer I shot with this ammo I hit 3 time and recovered 2 slugs and had the same expantion results.
PS> any reccomendations on .44mag and .357 hunting round Thanks Kris
@bobbycombo I would hope the longer barrel would allow for expansion, but to know for sure we would have to test it. I will see if I can find some for testing.
Hmmm. Leverevolution didn't seem to expand too much. I carry 180 grain Winchester hunting ammo in my Model 19. Glad to see this because I was seriously considering a box of the Hornady.
@deussolinvictus Yes I think we may have gotten a different result if we would have shot it from a rifle length barrel. Perhaps we can locate a lever action .357 and retest it.
@andreleger2001 I wouldn't waste your time. These things are fail. In order to cycle in most rifles, they cut the brass down and also the channelure is farther forward. The reduced powder capacity translates to reduced velocity, which translates to hollow points having a better ballistic coefficient (and trajectory) than the FTX 140s.
They may actually expand out of a rifle. But after 50 or so yards you are back into the same velocities that it fails to expand at.
@40DegreeShoulder That may be true. At 50 yards you would have lost some velocity, perhaps as much as you gain from the longer barrel of a rifle. Good point.
at the velocities indicated on the packaging...that's going to take a fair bit of flesh and lung tissue with it when its sizeabel 140 grain mass does exit. I'd think hunting might be the best application for this one. I'd like to see a head to head vs some of the more tradition cast loads people use on thin skinned game. Old school vs new in that respect. Nice videos.
The tip is a soft flexible rubber like material designed so that these can be used safely in a lever gun. The polymer tip is soft and mashes against the primer of the round in front of it in the loading tube. Recoil could possibly set off a round without the tip, although I would highly doubt it. They should work much better in a long barreled lever gun. They were not really designed to work at handgun velocities.
Expansion was only so-so...good but not great....but, after watching dozens (or 100s) of test videos, I could tell that the 140 Gr FTX is a hot load.
It moved your test barrel around more than any other round I have seen tested from a handgun.
It seemed to deliver the energy quickly...and that's a GOOD thing.

Will this ammo work in a snub nose ruger lcr 357? Someone gave me a box of it.
DuskbatRabbit 5 months ago
@DuskbatRabbit It will fire, but I do not think it will properly expand.
andreleger2001 5 months ago
@andreleger2001 does it expand properly in your SW cause you have longer barrel?

@greatwhitetailhunter Check out the Winchester Platinum test we did in .44 mag.

I bought a box of these for $22 at a gun show. I also bought 127gr xtp for my g19c. I will save this ammo for self defense.

Any Chrony data?

@intercooler2 We did this test before we had a chronograph. I will try to get some chrony data for you on this one.
andreleger2001 9 months ago
It doesn't look like fail to me. It's meant to be a rifle hunting round not a self-defence round.
SuperSneakySteve 1 year ago
@SuperSneakySteve I have to agree with you. It was meant to shoot out of a lever action rifle.

Are the regular Hornady Custom 125 and 140 gr xtp's good for defense? Thanks
jmkpns 1 year ago
@jmkpns Yes they would do just fine. The general trend for XTP's in my opinion is that they expand a little less and penetrate more.

Do you think these would react different in a .44magnum with a 7'' barrel?

well... it didn't expand much, im guessing that red tip is to help with penetration?
thanks for the videos!

these just do not perform well out of a handgun but then again, they weren't designed to come out of a handgun so that's understandable,
