We could afford to go to the moon and mars at the same time if we don't spend that horrendous amount of money on a socialized healthcare system. With money to spare.
Feel free to show us the math on your in depth study of socialized healthcare and it's impact on the budgets of space programs.
A successful spacefaring community will in fact have to be socialist, as it costs more to get a single gallon of water into space than most citizens could possibly afford. Add to that the cost of sending food, medical supplies, etc.. there is no possible way for capitalism as we know it to survive in space.
Sure, Richard Branson and about 5 other current companies building launch vehicles will never make any money ferrying tourists and launching satellites. You keep sucking that government tit. I don't need to show any math, take a look at Britain's system. Look at the EU countries wallowing in government largess. Fuck you and the socilialist train you rode in on.
Low earth orbit trips and comm satellites have nothing to do with the long term viability of interplanetary colonization. I find it amusing people turn their backs on a government whos policies are voted on by its citizens, to give power to corporations they have absolutely no control over. It is delusional to trust a corporation with a captive offworld market base to do what is right for the people and not its own bankroll. You can't even trust them on Earth. Hence the recent economic debacle.
It's very clear that space science and discovery are low on Obama's priority list. His welfare state is priority number one. :(
