  • That was Fantastic! I love that whole album. it sounds so young and fresh (which they were). I don't know why they didn't sell more records. We all loved to hear them whether or not we were buying them. I finally bought all their music when it came out on cd and just couldn't believe how beautiful and uplifting all of their music is. They were a great American band. They Byrds were always my favorite of that genre, but I think Poco is really more fun to listen to.

  • This is the first Poco song I heard & I was hooked on them. I wished Jim Messina stayed longer in this band, because I think they would have made it really big if he did. They were all really talented, but Jim added something special to this band, They never got the fame they deserved.

  • i have been a pro for over 40 years and i firmly believe this is the best written, most rockin' acoustic rock song in history. the mold definitely fell off the bench after these guys.

  • Richard Furay formerly of Buffalo Springfield was also a member . Country Rock at its best. Good Stuff.

  • John Byner was one of the BEST! I actually watched this when it was broadcast on TV.

  • this has a good beat to it....I love the drums.

  • Those were the good ole' days. Timothy B. Schmitt never ages. I'm so old,I never consdered him and Joe Walsh to be Eagles though. Timothy was a Poco member and Joe Walsh was in the James Gang. Its like you never like to see your favorite sports star on a different team. Oh wait,my nurse is telling me to take my psych meds.......

  • Paul Cotton joined Poco in 1971, replacing the departed Jim Messina.

    Jim

  • Where's Paul Cotton ? Am I missing something .......

  • @vdubdroptop Hey. This was before Paul Cotton's time. He didn't come in till later.

  • Note Timothy B. Schmidt, later of Eagles fame, lending his ample talents to the lineup of this great band!

  • Great thing about this song was that it foreshadowed the stuff Jim would go on to do with Kenny Loggins.

  • One word. AWKWARD. ;)

  • Yeah it`s swinging time again.....with this beautiful good rocking music with good harmonies...c`mon let me know how you feel...waauw

  • At least Poco members got on with each other and have remained friends for 40 years. The infighting in The Eagles tore them apart and we all know about the immortal quotation. "Till Hell Freezes Over"

  • Great band and a great sound but damn that is one lousy, lame, tv show.

  • Poco is a wonderful band! God bless you!

  • great tunes from this band, heck of a variety on that one show, and no they dont make music like this anymore, sadly

  • so much talent traveled thru this band,,i am amazed they weren't able to find a larger audience good tune thanks for posting

  • @fms1952 I've always wondered the same thing. I think they were, in a way, ahead of their time -- they didn't get a lot of radio play because they didn't fit neatly into any of the established categories of the day -- too rock for country and too country for rock.

  • Saw these guys at Cal Poly University, San Luis Obispo, CA years back. A tight group, very musical ... hot stuff! Brings back some nice memories.

  • Deliverin' was fantastic, and this tune is one of my all time favs, but the problem was that Poco didn't have enough great tunes like this one.

  • Great song.... anybody notice a young Timothy B. Schmidt of the Eagles playing bass?

  • Yep. He was a member of Poco back then - from 1970 to 1977.

  • this is a great tune!

  • Man! There is so much I have forgotten... The whole contry Rock scene was one big family with The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Poco, The Eagles, CSN&Y, Flying Burito Bros., J.D. Souther etc. This song is a brillieant country/rock/pop song. Briliantly produced and brilliant musicianship. I just recently discovered that Poco had emplyed Donald Fagen as a studio musician!?! Unfortunately Poco suffered from personel changes. Draining them of "edge". A bit like CSN minus Y. Still a great band!

  • It always baffled me why Poco never enjoyed the big commercial success on the level of Eagles and CSN&Y. I read somewhere: "too country for rock and too rock for country." Maybe that's it. Such a great song -- and I don't think it ever cracked the charts. Without question among the best musical and song-writing talent of the day.

  • Sincere THANKS for posting this clip. You have made me very happy. I saw Poco when they did their U.K. tour. Would you beleive they were the back up band to "America" Horse With No Name dudes. I fell asleep when they were on but woke up when poco came on. It was 18 Sept. 1975 and the ticket cost £2.50 about two bucks. I still have the poster I tore from the wall! Can't you hear all the influences such as CSN&Y and the others. Geniuses.

  • How's that work? You fell asleep for the headliners but then woke up for the backing band? Odd that they were in that order.

  • Dude, can I call you Dude, absolutely right,Deliverin is a great album, wish i was there too young though (4 yrs) what a blessing,I wish there was some footage around from those Boston shows

  • Poco's Deliverin' is one of the best live albums of all time...miles ahead of anything the Eagle did.

  • Great comparison given that they came out of the same era and shared some personell

I've got Deliverin on LP, still gets played at my house.

For a Live album it rules.

  • Hell, yeahhh

  • did loggins and messina cover this song too?

  • I noticed that way back then, they were using very creative, "moving" type video shots, which create a lot of interest, and for the most part were'nt done way back then. They use them now, but to me this was some "ground breaking" vidow cantalivered, moving type shots, that created action and interest. These guys just broke ground all over the place. Marc Trainor.

  • Hope somebody can get some footage at the Stagecoach Festival tomorrow. I'd love to be there!

  • rockonbonzo76washearrockoverdobbsferryrockoverwearevah

  • I beleve they were the Prelude to The "EAGLES" Yeah a shame they were never acccepted as rock or country. I have loved them 4 ever and if ya look, might see an EAGLE flying. LOL

  • Amen!!! inatizzy2!!!!!!! Amen, and your right. They were one of the precursers to the Eagles, along with the Buffalo Springfield, who Rusty Young played on one of their last songs, and of course joined with Ritchie Furay, and others to form Poco. These guys had Tim Schmidt later on in Poco, who then wento on into the Eagles. It's all a progression. Marc.

  • Don't forget the Flying Burrito Brothers who were also on that episode!

  • Wow, I wish I could have seen that whole program. I wonder if we could get ahold of some of those old episodes? Good stuff. Love the Burritos too. Marc.

  • If you do a search for "something else" and the Flying burrito brothers you'll find their performance for the episode.

  • Thanks!! I'll give that a shot. Marc.

  • Imagine that, two Country Rock pioneers Poco and the Flying Burritos Bros. in the same show. The Eagles took what it's predecessors (including Poco, Burritos, Byrds, Beau Brummels etc.) laid down and became stars. Bands that wrote their own songs, played their own instruments, employed melody and harmony...how radical.

  • Yea, your right on target (Forever YOung58) What a concept, for them to do their own writing, performing, recording, etc. and stick to their own principals of music. I admire that to the hilt in any band, and especially these guys. Love em all!!!!! I saw Poco once, live and they actually jamed playing country licks. You seldom hear country bands jamming like that, but these guys, just had it "goin' on". Marc.

  • these videos are funny

  • This is, very simply, the greatest country rock group ever. Saw 'em live in '72 and they were perfect, both instrumentally and vocally...perfect.

  • What a fun video to watch.

Total cornball of course but it makes you wonder why this group of guys never made it big.

In my opinion better than Eagles but the timing just didn't work.

Very rare to see Jimmy Messina with them too.

    Thanks for sharing this.

  • Randy problably had left the band for joing Linda Ronstadt where he met his future pals of his future band at that time The Eagles.

  • It's not a rave it's a happening :)!!!!!!!

  • My gosh this song is so great. My father's got everything from Poco!!! I dunno why this Band didn't get famous that much :)

  • Great song, they were so good together.

Video itself is rather comical though..

    wth? A boat?

  • I'm so glad I get to hear this. Makes me feel young at heart.Makes me want to dance around. realy great old song, you sensitive souls who found it way back when.

  • WHAT was Jon Bynner smoking??

  • Anyone else notice that the announcer for this variety show is the voice behind all those drive-in movie concession stand ads that played between the double features back in the day? Hilarious!

  • Who was the talent coordinator musically savvy enough to book Poco, Linda Ronstadt and The Flying Burrito Brothers ALL ON THE SAME SHOW? How wonderfully insane. Sounds like something Merv Griffin would do on one of his wacky "theme" shows.

  • The funny thing about this video is that Poco played their hit song on a docked boat. The Flying Burrito Brothers took the boat out for a cruise while they played their song - check their YouTube video titled: Flying Burrito Brothers - Older Guys

  • what the hell were the flying burrito brothers?!

  • The Flying Burrito Brothers were one of the first country rock bands, formed by ex-members of The Byrds (most notably the legendary country rock pioneer Gram Parsons). Check YouTube videos by Gram Parsons and The Flying Burrito Brothers and you'll get to know their music.

  • I agree that John Byner's bit here is pretty lame but I do want to point out that he was usually VERY funny. Every variety show, big back in the 70's, was markedly improved by his presence. It's really cool to see this performance. I have had this album (CD) for years and it is exceptional.

  • John Byner used to do a show on Showtime called "Bizarre" which was an absolute scream. That show also brought us "Super Dave" Osborne...too damn funny.

  • The "Action Faction" Dancers????????? LOL!!!

  • More talent in this band than the law should allow...too bad for the intro with John Byner, who is about as funny as a rubber crutch...

  • I remember John Byner, who was usually a funny guy. That intro was clearly not his finest moment. I don't remember the show "Something Else", however, and I would have been too young to appreciate Poco, Flying Burrito Bros. and Linda Ronstadt on the same show. That was freakin' awesome. The late 60's-early 70's country rock was fantastic. Sadly, they don't make music like that anymore.

  • Tru Dat!

  • Druggy enough!

    Great song as well

  • Pick a favorite incarnation of POCO? Too doggone hard for me, but this lineup was hell on wheels LIVE!!! Why this band is not recognized as one of the all time greats is beyond me. I guess the world just wasn't ready for country rock back then. Thanks for posting the POCO vidz gang.

  • Great Stuff! I have deLIVErin' on LP and play it over and over again...

  • me 2

  • that is an awesome record : )

  • I was a fan, in the early 70s. I'm wondering if Poco still exists? If they do, when do they come to Holland. On youtube I see video's dated "2004", sooooo.... come to Holland!!

  • This clip is from 1970 because Jim Messina was still in the band at the time. Jim left in November 1970 and was replaced by Paul Cotton (who is not in this video clip). By the way, "You Better Think Twice" is a Jim Messina compostion.

  • Just great-I loved it!

  • John Byner was a pretty funny guy, and also look at the other "alternative country" luminaries on the show. Linda Rondstat, and the Flying Burrito Bros. Bless your heart John, for puttiing these great country rock artists on your show. Marc Trainor.

  • That was a speedy reply,Jim,thanks a lot.Your info means a lot to me & fans of Poco and Eagles.Keep posting....

  • A very refreshing band in its time...in similar genre called Country Rock as The Burrito Bros. Can somebody tell me who from Poco later went on to join Eagles? TY in advance

  • Original Poco bassist Randy Meisner was a founding member of the Eagles. He was replaced in Poco by Timothy B. Schmit, and when Randy left the Eagles he was again replaced by Timothy.

  • @pocojim was Don Felder ever a emmeber of Poco before the Eagels?

  • @mclenptp Timothy schmidt the cute one with the long hair on the eagles hell freezes over

  • @mclenptp timothy b schmidt (bass(

  • @mclenptp Timothy B. Schmidt

  • Messina - really, really underrated guitar picker, Jerry Reed style.

  • The 1st band I ever saw live.

    Carnegie Hall...hmm, 1971 me thinks.

  • Bingo on the year, saw them at the Capitol Theater in Passaic NJ, the same tour. There were 2 other bands also that I can't dig out of the ole grey matter. Seems like Harry Chapin was one. All I reallly know is, we were damn lucky to live it. Peace, Joe Fitz

  • Timothy B. Schmidt is still one of the finest men ever to pick up a guitar....

  • Amazingly complex for the (back then) still emerging Folk/Country Rock genre. Never did master that bass line smoothly or the top harmony line.

  • The whole album's good. I've got it on cd, John Byner? He's on the Red Green Show PBS>

  • The last time I heard this was in the summer of '72 on am56 WHBQ radio here in Memphis. I never could find the 45. It's not even on eBay. Probably wasn't issued on 45, but now we have YouTube. We've got the song and the video! Just unbelievable!

  • It was a single -- issued 8/22/1970, but only reached #72. Single version was edited down from the album version -- like all Columbia singles were.

  • I could be wrong but I believe they had a portion of this tape playing continously at the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland in 2001.

  • i wont think twice u divi

  • Wow! What a great trip back in time... Thank you!

  • Fantastic! I've always loved Poco, they were so underated, they should have been huge.

Been a fan for 30 years.

  • What a wacky video,never knew this excisted,very cool.

  • great composite, in context! Loved this group.

  • This was the best Poco lineup, the most creative. Meisner was a hiccup, tho he profited during the reunion tour. Really super to see this fabulous performance of Messina's crowning achievement.

  • Ass kickin' country-rock. Just as good as the Flying Burrito Brothers.

  • Thanks for sharing...would have liked a clip where they were not just lipsynching...but this was enjoyable too!

  • great video, where in the world did you find it?

  • I'd also love to see the Linda Ronstadt clip!

  • long intro great memories of a different time a more interesting one at that

  • Awesome - thanks for sharing this.
