  • Because your electrodes aren't separated by a membrane your Cl2 will react with NaOH to produce sodium hypochlorite if I'm not mistaken. So you'll be lucky to get much NaOH. And to clear something up in the comments -H and Cl2 don't have to be burned to produce HCL. Actually that doesn't make any sense. In fact, if your gases have a chance to mix they will quickly react to form HCl gas. Needless to say you don't wanna be breathing that in.

  • @InfiniteGravity Hypochlorite only form when soliution is being mixed or they are very close to each other. they are far away enough.

  • @Oinikis electrodes i mean

  • say doc, what's cookin'?

  • Tip: You can get some good carbon rods out of an old 6V lantern battery.

  • @mikegLXIVMM Yeah I know. I was too lazy to pry open it so I used pencils. Much more easier but it's kinda hard to connect.

  • @asianspark

    Does the graphite last long?

Maybe they are better in that way.

I know that the carbon rods from batteries eventually erode and I have to replace them. I want to eventually build a table top "Nelson cell" so I can produce my own chlorine in useful amounts.

  • @asianspark i use pencils but u know how i get all of graphite out of a pencil i pour lighter floud and set pencil on fire then when its all ash the carbongraphite rod wont burn and u can get it out of the asdh and its whole

  • This is electrolysis of NaCl solution in water.

Electrolysis of (pure, molten) NaCl itself gives completely different results.

  • those "chlorine" bubbles are more probably hydrogen chloride bubbles. distill those off next time and you will have either chlorine gas or more probably unnaturally pure HCl.

  • Actually the chlorine is indeed just chlorine. The hydrogen is evolving at the cathode and if you mix the hydrogen and chlorine together and burn them, then you get hydrogen chloride, which when dissolved in water produces hydrochloric acid.

  • I ment water not WASTER

  • It wasnt faint after that.

I used 2mol of Sodium Chloride solution.

    And, you CAN remove it.

I tried it and i was fed up because it kept breaking apart.

Just use a blade and slice it.

Continue all the sides and you can pull out the graphite.

Anyway, my chlorine did not dissolve into the waster.

    PH was about ~10

    Due to Sodium Hydroxide produced.

  • what kind of sol'n did you use? if it was super saturated then your chlorine wouldnt dissolvee and would'nt look faint =D.

  • ROFLMMAO kool pencils XD i keep trying to remove the graphite from em. thanks for the revealation XD
