Well, Hoboken and Lower Manhattan built the Hudson Tubes tunnel in the 1870s, so that beats out the New York IRT, the Boston MTA, and the London tube, all of which commenced after 1900 (earlier "underground" systems ran aboveground in trenches or on elevated tracks). Oh dear, they never got a passenger system running through it till about 1910...
An American entrepreneur that claims to have done the work, collected the money and done a runner? Very unusual that hardly ever happens today...................
@Ham549, this will sound crazy but the oldest train tunnel ever was built in 1831 and was in Schenectady, NY. If I am remembering this right, the trolley system that was there in the 1800's to the 1920's actually went subterranean between State street and the Stockade district, and came back up right before it got to the Mohawk river.
The London Underground is a rapid transit system serving a large part of Greater London and neighbouring areas of Essex, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire in the UK. The first section opened in 1863, and was the first underground railway system in the world? WRONG!!! Atlantic Avenue Tunnel is officially the world's oldest subway tunnel. This tunnel was built in 1844, under a Brooklyn Street. Furthermore the Brooklyn battery tunnel didn't open until May 25, 1950, one hundred and six year later.
@Ham549 hahaha my friend,i was wrong again,,but the brooklyn one (this one) was the first to have the trains running through it.. so i think we are all agreed that it was infact Boston to have the oldest tunnel, i did some research,,and fun it was as well,, yep it was Boston for the oldest tunnel but with no trains.
look the first subway tunnel was built in new york in 1844 no trains , the first under ground system with trains was london they were steam trains , the first under ground system with electric trains was also london 1890 , budapest was the second city 1893 fact ,
I did a bit of searching and learned that "The Atlantic Avenue Tunnel is officially the world's oldest subway tunnel, built in 1844 by the cut-and-cover method under a City of Brooklyn Street." England has one of the oldest, but it wasn't completed until 1863, almost twenty years later.
joan collins's cooch is to wide to be a tunnel . its more like the entrance to a multi story car park . ask british leyland they lost a mini in there some years ago when it was in its prime . yuk . lol . ps . ya video stinks .
This is simply a rail underpass. You should avoid using the term "subway" as it is distinctly referring to the subsurface rapid transit system itself, whereas this is just a railway tunnel.
tunnel is 1/2 mile long and its covered in behind a wall on either side by 200 feet of dirt. They want to excavate, but the City wont allow it. They are hoping to secure funds for a documentary in the next few weeks to go down and excavate.
@Ham549 Technically a subway is an underpass. It doesn't matter what passes through it. It could be people, wagons, cars, or rail based systems such as freight trains and even passenger trains(which is what you are calling a subway car). So NY does have an older subway system. Boston just has the older underground mass transit passenger train system.
@Ham549 Wrong. No one "rides" the subway technically. The subway is just the tunnel. You are riding the passenger train that goes through it. The railed passenger train cars are just commonly and mistakenly called "the subway". A train is a connected series of vehicles for rail transport that move along a track to transport cargo or passengers from one place to another. Doesn't matter if they are above or below ground.
love the video really good

Are you guys kidding? Look up the definition of a subway. Any train running underground is a subway.

Technically, a "subway" is an underpass (which may or may not be a tunnel), no matter what travels through it.
In the UK, a "subway" is a pedestrian tunnel. What we call a "subway", they call an "underground" or "tube".
In Toronto, Canada, we use the word "subway" to mean both our underground transit system, and where a road passes under a bridge.
To further complicate things, there wasn't much difference between subway trains & regular trains before electrification.

sub·way
a. An underground urban railroad, usually operated by electricity.
b. A passage for such a railroad.
2. An underground tunnel or passage, as for a water main or for pedestrians.
