  • love the video really good

  • Are you guys kidding? Look up the definition of a subway. Any train running underground is a subway.

  • Well, Hoboken and Lower Manhattan built the Hudson Tubes tunnel in the 1870s, so that beats out the New York IRT, the Boston MTA, and the London tube, all of which commenced after 1900 (earlier "underground" systems ran aboveground in trenches or on elevated tracks). Oh dear, they never got a passenger system running through it till about 1910...

  • Apparently no one can visit anymore. Local government wont allow it. Closed for good... I would of loved to see it.

  • Technically, a "subway" is an underpass (which may or may not be a tunnel), no matter what travels through it.

In the UK, a "subway" is a pedestrian tunnel. What we call a "subway", they call an "underground" or "tube".

In Toronto, Canada, we use the word "subway" to mean both our underground transit system, and where a road passes under a bridge.

To further complicate things, there wasn't much difference between subway trains & regular trains before electrification.

  • nice tunnel and long probably

  • That chairman was one greedy son of a bitch.

  • @Ham549, this will sound crazy but the oldest train tunnel ever was built in 1831 and was in Schenectady, NY. If I am remembering this right, the trolley system that was there in the 1800's to the 1920's actually went subterranean between State street and the Stockade district, and came back up right before it got to the Mohawk river.

  • He said it ran all the way here to boston? Is it still here. Can we follow it to the end?

  • Everyone is wrong, it was the Astez or another people in 16000 BC lol, their tunnel's still span underground from South to North America.

  • @katiemilker Tell me more in a pm plz. :)

  • The London Underground is a rapid transit system serving a large part of Greater London and neighbouring areas of Essex, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire in the UK. The first section opened in 1863, and was the first underground railway system in the world? WRONG!!! Atlantic Avenue Tunnel is officially the world's oldest subway tunnel. This tunnel was built in 1844, under a Brooklyn Street. Furthermore the Brooklyn battery tunnel didn't open until May 25, 1950, one hundred and six year later.

  • Where's Regan when you need him?

"Mr. Diamond, tear down this wall!" lol

  • it is the oldest "tunnel" in the world, that di have steam trains running on it in 1844,

London was the oldest underground "system" in the world, which was inaugurated in 1863.

haha i got it right in the end

  • @Jimpsterz You'll find that two tunnels were made for steam trains in Liverpool in 1829 which is 15 years before this one.

  • @Jimpsterz

No again WRONG it is a train tunnel Boston's Tremont Street Subway is the oldest in the US.

  • @Ham549 hahaha my friend,i was wrong again,,but the brooklyn one (this one) was the first to have the trains running through it.. so i think we are all agreed that it was infact Boston to have the oldest tunnel, i did some research,,and fun it was as well,, yep it was Boston for the oldest tunnel but with no trains.

  • @Jimpsterz but The Atlantic Avenue Tunnel is officially the world's oldest subway tunnel

  • look the first subway tunnel was built in new york in 1844 no trains , the first under ground system with trains was london they were steam trains , the first under ground system with electric trains was also london 1890 , budapest was the second city 1893 fact ,

  • ... Sorry but no. the first electric powered subway was in Boston.

  • sorry but london was the first , in 1890 fact ,boston was from 1897 fact ,

  • Boston was the first in the US. London was first in the world.

  • the Brooklyn tunnel is older than that.

  • wait but the Boston subway is the 1st subway ever

  • i saw that on the tv once, i just wanna see the engine!

  • I did a bit of searching and learned that "The Atlantic Avenue Tunnel is officially the world's oldest subway tunnel, built in 1844 by the cut-and-cover method under a City of Brooklyn Street." England has one of the oldest, but it wasn't completed until 1863, almost twenty years later.

  • joan collins's cooch is to wide to be a tunnel . its more like the entrance to a multi story car park . ask british leyland they lost a mini in there some years ago when it was in its prime . yuk . lol . ps . ya video stinks .

  • of course the oldest subway isn't even in america,

but let them dream as usual how magnificent they are.

  • yeah the first subway system in the world is in Boston

  • i went on that tour today[ :

  • The oldest tunnel in American is Joan Collin's cooch.

  • the oldest subway tunnel is between park street and boylston in BOSTON not new york

  • You are wrong.

  • actually your half right... the tunnel ran from brooklyn to boston. so its both

  • its not a subway tunnel this is just a railway tunnel not subway donot worry boston new york did not beat you in this 2

  • yea thats right all day boston wats good

  • This is simply a rail underpass. You should avoid using the term "subway" as it is distinctly referring to the subsurface rapid transit system itself, whereas this is just a railway tunnel.

  • check out THE MOLE OF EDGE HILL

  • That intro was loud and scared the living crap out of me.

  • i wanna go to tht tunnel

  • if there is a locomotive behind the wall, then dig the that thing out

  • why hasn't anyone torn down the wall?

  • The tunnel connecting 'Park Street Station' & 'Boylston Street Station'. Streetcars run under Boston Common.

  • Excellent! ^__^

  • I just found out today that theres a platform way under Grand Central that Roosevelt had

  • Really?

  • they wont dig any more because it is under the Gowanus expressway and it might collapse

  • how far does the tunnel ends? why can't they just break the wall to check?

  • tunnel is 1/2 mile long and its covered in behind a wall on either side by 200 feet of dirt. They want to excavate, but the City wont allow it. They are hoping to secure funds for a documentary in the next few weeks to go down and excavate.

  • Wronge it is not a "subway" tunnel it is a train tunnel. Boston has the oldest subway in the US

  • And you are CORRECT!!!!

  • @Ham549 WRONG:

    sub·way

    a. An underground urban railroad, usually operated by electricity.

    b. A passage for such a railroad.

    2. An underground tunnel or passage, as for a water main or for pedestrians.

    Look it up

    noob...

    Boston doesn't have shit

  • @Ham549 It's underground. A subway is underground. Ergo, subway.

  • @Ham549 Technically a subway is an underpass. It doesn't matter what passes through it. It could be people, wagons, cars, or rail based systems such as freight trains and even passenger trains(which is what you are calling a subway car). So NY does have an older subway system. Boston just has the older underground mass transit passenger train system.

  • @Ham549 Wrong. No one "rides" the subway technically. The subway is just the tunnel. You are riding the passenger train that goes through it. The railed passenger train cars are just commonly and mistakenly called "the subway". A train is a connected series of vehicles for rail transport that move along a track to transport cargo or passengers from one place to another. Doesn't matter if they are above or below ground.

  • @SacredSocietyAP Fine a subway tunnel is a tunnel for carrying light rail trains.

  • @Ham549 yea and it was a short four-track tunnel, with only two stations..(that's gay)

    new york wins

  • @silvakid No what is "gay" is New York trying to say it has the oldest subway tunnel

  • @Ham549 I don't see how you guys can link an abandoned tunnel with homosexuality!!

  • cool!
