The 'Green Revolution' of the 60's & 70's was a well-intentioned effort to halt starvation in the world. The founder of that movement stated that it was never intended to be an ongoing standard practice, but a stop-gap measure to save lives. Late in life he was quoted as saying he wished the 'Green Revolution' had never happened, and regretted his role in it - the negative effects of reduced soil fertility world-wide, and even less ability for people to feed themselves, had become apparant.
