Warmer water and urchin population are to blame. Plus a huge recreation crayfish fishery that removes a formidable urchin predator.
But then again kelp forest are out of sight, our of mind for most people.
Tasmanians are fiercely protective of their eucalyptus forest, nearly 40% of the Island is locked up in parks. They would be outraged if there was a 90% reduction, no outrage for kelp.
