Different jokers from different era's. Nicholson was brilliant and so was Ledger but the emphasis on their portrayal was completely different. I dont think you can compare the two as a result i just reckon they were both brilliant. Sick of reading people attack Nicholson's performance based upon his clothing etc. The film is a bit outdated but that isnt a reflection on his performance
You know I really Heath Ledgers Joker, but Jack Nicholson will always be my favorite. For me he seems better. Especially that laugh he does. It sends chills down my spine everytime I hear it. Heath's laugh was kinda lame, but his performance was great. I like that Tim Burtons version of Gotham City is in no way relatable to New York. That is what Chris Nolans Gotham reminds me of.
Some of you people are stupid fucks, Jack is a GREAT actor but his performance as the Joker was NOTHING compared to Ledger's. And if you read a comic book you would know that Ledger's Joker is FAR more like the Joker than Jack's was, which lets face it, was just Jack in clown make up. I could not even tell that was Heath Ledger in the movie, all i saw was the Joker. So let go of your fucking nostalgia and stop talking shit on youtube. End rant.
@NottinghamForest22 Ledger sucked? yes, he clearly sucked MAJOR ass. That's why his Joker has become iconic and is constantly mentioned as one of the greatest villains in cinema history, it's also why he won an Oscar and loads of other awards. Oh wait, or did all of that happen because he died? you know, like all those other actors who died and got the same praise?
@Globox822 Actually mine is smart and not based off nostalgia like yours is. Also, if you ever read a batman comic in your life you would know that Ledger's Joker is the real Joker.
@Globox822 Actually you sound like a 12 year old, a 12 year old who has clearly never read a batman comic in his life yet still claims that Jack playing himself is "the real joker". What a douche.
@pred117 12yo troll is a troll. You just repeat everything I said. I never said Jack is a real Joker but he is much more closer to comic Joker then that overrated experiment with heath Ledger. Apparently the only insult that your small brain can come up with is that i'm 12, even though i'm clearly not 12. Did your parents by any chance mate with vegetables?

@pred117 Since the 1930/40s, there have been numerous different takes/incarnations on The Joker in Batman comics. While the current comic book Joker may have more of a Heath Ledger vibe, Nicholson's interpretation is closer to the predominant comic version of the Joker over the years. I don't think it really makes a difference though- each actor's performance suits the film they were in.
Worst movie ever. Nicholson hasn't had a good movie since the shining but even then it lacked a little thing I call acting like the rest of his movies. He's a horrible actor.
@Tyme1523 aww are you mad because of the fact the Jack is the best Joker ever? maybe you're not mad about that........But what kind of a "Horrible Actor" won 4 Academy Awards? I think you need to shut your YAP!
Ledger's Joker matches with the early comic book joker, like in his first three appearances in the comic. in the 60s, they toned the joker from completely menacing to more of a sick sense of humor kind of guy like Nicholson's Joker was. Both are true representations, just depends on which comic era you look at.
We are doing a stop motion animation film called Tim. The movie is a stop motion animation film that is dedicated to Tim Burton and has Sir Christopher Lee as the narrator. Search the directors name Brian Joseph Ochab to find the video.
I agree, they were both awesome performances, but what always amazed me with Nicholson was that it was the same guy playing the gangster at the beginning of the film, and then The Joker.
Just look at how his performance changes, and you really get the feel of the characters mental decline, not to mention how much the makeup alters your perception.
Heath was great, and truly menacing, but for me Joker '89 captures the comic book tone perfectly.
@Kilox1000 yes I see what you mean, what struck me about heath was that it seemed incredible that underneath the grimy make-up and the scars was that good-looking blonde dude from oz.
I guess the difference between the two actors is that Nicholson makes a brilliant deviation between his characters in the film and is similar to the sleazy characters he frequently plays. Ledger on the other hand as a massive departure in-character from his actual self.
Heath Ledger was an amazing actor. It is very hard to find actors like him in this era. His interpretation of Joker was amazing. However Jack Nicholson`s was even better. That is just my opinion.
Both Actors did a great job, and Jack is probably the best actor for a crazy person ever(The Shining... no comment needed) But I love Heath more, because he's the more convincing, more evil, crazier Joker!!!
wtf with this silly rivalry? okay Nicholson was amazing and creepy. Ledger was mentally scary. Nicholson was portraying the Joker from the vintage comics and Adam West show. Ledger took it to a whole new level. Long story short, they BOTH made awesome Jokers. There - end of story - the end. Now stop bitching like lil bitches.
I like this guy's Joker a lot more than Ledger. Hell, I even liked the Joker from Batman Under The Red Hood better than Ledger. The Joker's supposed to be just that: the joker. A crazy freak with enough crazy to do all that he does.
@RealDefKilla There was nothing "realistic" about Heath Ledger's joker. The character was omniscient, invincible, and devoid of any genuine human traits. He was an over the top unstoppable nihilistic monster who's every little move was somehow the culmination of a master plan. The only thing that didn't go his way was the scene with the two barges poised to kill each other but then THAT scene was also totally unbelievable. The new "realistic" Batman movies are ironically the least believable.
@kinnikugoku9 the dark knight is the darkest batman movie therefor they didn't want like it to be funny even though thats what the joker is generally like , the joker was still awesome ,i kinda prefered him because to be that way i though he was more crazy and wacky , if you want kinda a really funny person in the batman franchise it has to be riddler
I love jack nicholson as the Joker he has that crazy smile and eyes but he was not as skinny tho and he looked to old joker was more a younger person skinny but face wise without makeup it fit him the joker look.
ok does everyone that compare the two Jokers have any brains? really your looking at two very different Jokers one is more comical Jack and one is more realistic Heath there both very good jokers not one has let me down and pluse everyone knows Mark Hamill has the best Joker voice hahahah
Why did he call him jack? The joker's not supposed to have a real name, or, well it's unknown even in the comic books. No offense to burton, but i personally feel that he screwed up the batman story. All I'm Saying
@chanelprincess16 yes but Napier was made up. In "The Killing Joke" i'll admit that Joker's real name was jack(so happy i got a chance to read it). But yeah Ledger owned Nicholson, but ledger didn't come up with the glasgow smile concept for joker either. It was used in the joker comic before the movie came out. People are giving ledger credit for something he didn't do
@TheFBChannel I agree. They were different Jokers. Jack Nicholson played the newer, happier, crazier Joker. Whereas Heath Ledger played the original homicidal maniac Joker.
@ShodexTube So the Nicholson joker wasn't a homicidal maniac? He murdered his own henchmen, incinerated a rival crime boss with a toy buzzer, melted his girlfriend's face and subsequently tossed her out of a window, killed an entire museum full of people, and attempted to kill everyone in Gotham city twice with chemicals. I'd say that he was a lot more than just, you know, a joker. Heath Ledger played the crow with a silly speech impediment gone bad, not the joker.
@TheFBChannel It's not a rivalry.. it's just two different characters! Jack Nicholson was The Joker, and Heath, despite his brilliant acting, was a sociopath that had nothing to do with The Joker... He said in an interview that if it was meant to be a Jack Nicholson impersonator he would never do it.. enough said.
@verabj I think you haven't got the meaning of Nolan's interpretation. Literarily the Joker in TDK is even closer to the Joker in the comics. But both Jokers are great, that's it.
@TheFBChannel not exactly, the joker in the dark knight was more menacing n psychopathic.there was hardly any laughter or dark comedy.but the joker from the '89 batman was much more closer wit the comic book joker in the since of him being a psycho n having the twisted sense of humor that the joker is known for.the '89 batman was really more like the comic n cartoon in both look n character, capturing all charcter traits.still i admit u cant go wrong wit either jack or heath's joker.
Tim Burtons batmobile was much more sleeker, manacing and looked like a something batman would drive when the Dark Knights batmobile just looked like a tank.
Dde these guys dont want to embrace the present and cant get a grip on themselves. Its pointless to comment against the 1989 Batman which is now quite unwatchable.
I forced myself to get to the end just to give the old movies a fair chance. Boy how I regret that decision
Yea they were both great, but i still prefer nicholson..However i think there is absoultely no comparsion between Keaton and Baal..Keaton totally blows Baal out of the water on every aspect..
@jazzmanEE Noooo dude i said he blows baal out of the water...read my comment again fool haha..Keaton was undeniably the best batman and bruce wayne..
and millions will also agree. they just dont feel the need to defend their argument since it is now considered the best superhero film and Ledger earned an Oscar. You guys however have to sit on youtube and defend something that isn't even capable of racing against tdk.
So you try to surround yourselves with like-minded people to feel better, Hey I do it too sometimes.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
in 1989-2000 Batman movies, there were good actors in wrong roles:Batman - Jack Nicholson as Joker Batman Forever - Jim Carrey as Riddler Batman & Robin - Arnold as Mr.Freeze
BTW Heath was the perfect and the best Joker ever!!!Nobody cant be that good as Heath,he was born as Joker!
The reason why I prefer Heath's Joker is because he went back to the roots with that character; the cruel, homocidal and psychopathic Joker from the 40's, 70's and 80's.
I like Heath's joker better. How faithful to the original Joker it is aside I feel it represents a twisted character better and there is a bit of irony that a person named "The Joker" behaves like the Joker behaved in the new Dark Knight.
I thoughht Heath Ledger was great as well, but he was just way too menacing for me. He hardly laughed and had none of the traditional Joker qualities. My three top Jokers are Nicholson and how he was portrayed in the Batman animated series and the more recent "Batman: Arkham Asylum."
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Jack Nicholson wasn't a good joker; mainly because the joker is more than just a psychopath he's also supposed to be scary. Heath did it well and the cartoon series did it well. Jack's joker is just kind of goofy looking nothing really scary about him. The real problem with translating the character into a real life person is that if you try to go the comic book route, like Jack did, they come off looking goofy. Therefore Heath went more realistically and was more believable as a character.
I disagree. Ledger's Joker is pretty much an entire different character than the traditional Joker we have known for decades. He is just an antagonist murderer w/minor jokes who wore make up for no reason.... while on the other hand Nicholson's Joker was more traditional as a psychotic murderer who became who he was from an accident that damaged his skin, face and hair. I really didn't find Ledger's Joker "dark" or "scary". He seemed much happier and less psychotic than Nicholson's Joker.
Jack's joker was close to the origins of the comic book so therefore it was explained why his face was white. However for me personally I always thought the whole falling into acid storyline was kind of goofy. So that would be the reason why I don't really take Jack's joker seriously. Heath's joker was just psychotic, so him wearing face paint just seemed like a normal thing for him to do. Also one final note, when was Heath's joker happy? He was just crazy not happy.
Well when it comes down to it, it depends what kind of Joker you rather prefer. I grew up knowing and enjoying the traditional Joker since I was a kid so naturally I rather prefer the Nicholson Joker.
Well in my opinion, like many of the traditional Batman fans, I rather preferred something that was true to the comics but done in a realistic way, such as in Tim Burton's Batman. It just seems more proper rather than rewritting a character completely just for a film. I always liked the Joker for his pranks, the crazy shit he would say.... he really made you think he belonged in Arkham Asylum while Heath's Joker felt like a toned down character that wasn't as deep as I personally expected.
While I love Heath's terrifying realistic Joker, I tend to lean a little more towards Jack's Joker because you see Heath's everywhere nowadays and few appreciate Jack's classic comedic creepiness. On Halloween, I must've seen nearly a hundred Heaths running around. My boyfriend decided to dress up as the Nicholson Joker (and I was Harley Quinn) and we quickly got very popular. Can't wait to see the reactions at Comic Con...
i just saw dark knight last night. i think its way over hyped. its a great crime drama, but a terrible batman movie. heath ledger tried to make a more dramatic serious joker that seemed more realistic, but in the end i think it stunk. jack nicholson's joker is spot on. he goes from serious bad guy to crazy psychopath in seconds. tim burtons vision of gotham city and all the characters are far better. i really hate the new batman films. they are "cool", but lack a certain creativity.
The Dark Knight was more of a dark comedy. But I gotta say Jack had some funny things with that version. The only thing i didn't like was that they killed him off in the 1989 film.
I love nicholsons joker and the way you edited the video captures his cerazzyness. the only thing i have against tim burtons joker is his backstory..iTS NOT TRUEEEE T_T..they made it too conveniant; that the joker killed batmans perants...sorry..rambling LOVE THE JOKER.
i may be the only one when i say this but i think jack napier was a little more sinister than the joker from the dark knight. where heath ledger's joker was outright evil and terrorized people and everyone knew it, jack's jack (see how i did that?) never really let you know he was going to kill you. he let you think he was just business, and was cracking jokes trying to put you at ease and then BAM!- herpes.
he also brought another element to the Joker, joking. Other than the pencil trick scene I think Ledger's Joker got a little too deep with his speeches and didn't have jokes in a lot of them. Not his fault because his acting was awsome, but the writers gave Joker too much serious talking and not enough funny talk and deadly joke props. For instance, in the final showdown in this movie Jack is hilarious when he says "You wouldn't hit a guy with glasses would you?" as he puts on joke glasses X0
since the dark knight is more of a movie trying to put a hero in reality, thats why they had him be serious.they wanted a twisted psycho.since older movies took more from the comics they are more true to character.
Jack's joker was based on the comic book joker and Heath's was a completely new joker. If they had made Heath's joker tell jokes all the time then it would have seemed like a rip off of Jack's joker. So they made an original character in a different universe in order to create a different character for viewers who had already seen Nicholson's interpretation of the character.
maybe you're right, but then jack nicholson would be crazy in real too, like in shining.but he isn't( i hope so). further heath couldn't play the joker, when he couldn't compare at least one of his abilities to the joker he wanted to play.
I'll tell you what made Ledger's version of Joker so poular...the way he looked. Honsetly that's the only reason he is so popular, take away the goofy black eye makeup, comb his hair back, and put him in a original purple joker suit and he would be way less popular. Besides, what else made him so popular was the fact that he died and everyone went an seen the Dark knight just to say, "I seen the last movie Heath Ledger played in before he bit the dust" Honestly, that's the only two reasons.
Heath Ledger was a good actor. Therefore I knew he could play a psychotic killer effectively. Sure Jack did fine but Heath did it the way people want to see it. Not some goofy clown but a maniac in face paint masquerading as a clown. People want to see someone that is scary and menacing. They got that from Heath and not Jack. Call us shallow but we like our villains to be villainous and not just goofy.
But regardless of my opinion, Heath did a good job playing his character although I prefer something more traditional. TDK in general was enjoyable and it really brought Batamn back from the dead after having to suffer through Batman & Robin lol.
You can't compare heath and jack because they are 2 completely different styles of batman.

Jack Nicholson has done many great films.
Batman, how ever was not one of them.
It's not his type of film.

ok does everyone that compare the two Jokers have any brains? really your looking at two very different Jokers one is more comical Jack and one is more realistic Heath there both very good jokers not one has let me down and pluse everyone knows Mark Hamill has the best Joker voice hahahah

VikingThor1 1 year ago
Why did he call him jack? The joker's not supposed to have a real name, or, well it's unknown even in the comic books. No offense to burton, but i personally feel that he screwed up the batman story. All I'm Saying
musefan95 1 year ago
@musefan95 jack is the the jokers real name ironic...same as the actor weird
anyway heath changed his mannerisms and voice his acting is way better that nichols
chanelprincess16 1 year ago
@chanelprincess16 yes but Napier was made up. In "The Killing Joke" i'll admit that Joker's real name was jack(so happy i got a chance to read it). But yeah Ledger owned Nicholson, but ledger didn't come up with the glasgow smile concept for joker either. It was used in the joker comic before the movie came out. People are giving ledger credit for something he didn't do
musefan95 1 year ago
@musefan95 ooh it was made up~ oh i nvr get chance to ever read the comic
yea but heath came up w/ tongue lashes cuz of the smile.oh i remeber seeing the penguin ina live batman movie was it the one w/ nicholson??

@chanelprincess16 No, that was the one after the one with Nicholson. It was Batman Returns. It had Catwoman in it too, right?

Why is there always this rivalry?
Both, Heath Ledger and Jack Nicholson, did great performances! That's it!
TheFBChannel 1 year ago 127
@TheFBChannel I agree. They were different Jokers. Jack Nicholson played the newer, happier, crazier Joker. Whereas Heath Ledger played the original homicidal maniac Joker.
ShodexTube 1 year ago
@ShodexTube So the Nicholson joker wasn't a homicidal maniac? He murdered his own henchmen, incinerated a rival crime boss with a toy buzzer, melted his girlfriend's face and subsequently tossed her out of a window, killed an entire museum full of people, and attempted to kill everyone in Gotham city twice with chemicals. I'd say that he was a lot more than just, you know, a joker. Heath Ledger played the crow with a silly speech impediment gone bad, not the joker.
BandofSorensons 1 year ago 3
@TheFBChannel
True, but Jack Nicholson was better.
TokyoNerd 1 year ago
@TheFBChannel It's not a rivalry.. it's just two different characters! Jack Nicholson was The Joker, and Heath, despite his brilliant acting, was a sociopath that had nothing to do with The Joker... He said in an interview that if it was meant to be a Jack Nicholson impersonator he would never do it.. enough said.
verabj 1 year ago
@verabj I think you haven't got the meaning of Nolan's interpretation. Literarily the Joker in TDK is even closer to the Joker in the comics. But both Jokers are great, that's it.
TheFBChannel 1 year ago
@TheFBChannel not exactly, the joker in the dark knight was more menacing n psychopathic.there was hardly any laughter or dark comedy.but the joker from the '89 batman was much more closer wit the comic book joker in the since of him being a psycho n having the twisted sense of humor that the joker is known for.the '89 batman was really more like the comic n cartoon in both look n character, capturing all charcter traits.still i admit u cant go wrong wit either jack or heath's joker.

I know it's hard to admit a new movie is better than a classic but, come on.
Both where brilliant both jokers and batmans where brilliant, but The Dark Knights wins in every aspect.
Although it's a tie between Keaton and Bale. Also a tie between batmobiles. (:
JBJones66 1 year ago
Tim Burtons batmobile was much more sleeker, manacing and looked like a something batman would drive when the Dark Knights batmobile just looked like a tank.

Christopher Nolan's batmobile is more realistic and you know where is came from.
Where did Keaton get that car?? Did he design it himself? Did Wayne Enterprise build it as a prototype? I just can't see it.. Unrealistic.

Don't get me wrong I love that car, it's a classic, but I like the TDK batmobile better. (:

The reason why I prefer Heath's Joker is because he went back to the roots with that character; the cruel, homocidal and psychopathic Joker from the 40's, 70's and 80's.
HRVDNT 2 years ago 3
I like Heath's joker better. How faithful to the original Joker it is aside I feel it represents a twisted character better and there is a bit of irony that a person named "The Joker" behaves like the Joker behaved in the new Dark Knight.

I thoughht Heath Ledger was great as well, but he was just way too menacing for me. He hardly laughed and had none of the traditional Joker qualities. My three top Jokers are Nicholson and how he was portrayed in the Batman animated series and the more recent "Batman: Arkham Asylum."

ThrowAnOnion 2 years ago
MadMeddle 2 years ago 2
Jack's joker was close to the origins of the comic book so therefore it was explained why his face was white. However for me personally I always thought the whole falling into acid storyline was kind of goofy. So that would be the reason why I don't really take Jack's joker seriously. Heath's joker was just psychotic, so him wearing face paint just seemed like a normal thing for him to do. Also one final note, when was Heath's joker happy? He was just crazy not happy.
ThrowAnOnion 2 years ago
Well when it comes down to it, it depends what kind of Joker you rather prefer. I grew up knowing and enjoying the traditional Joker since I was a kid so naturally I rather prefer the Nicholson Joker.
MadMeddle 2 years ago 5
Well in my opinion, like many of the traditional Batman fans, I rather preferred something that was true to the comics but done in a realistic way, such as in Tim Burton's Batman. It just seems more proper rather than rewritting a character completely just for a film. I always liked the Joker for his pranks, the crazy shit he would say.... he really made you think he belonged in Arkham Asylum while Heath's Joker felt like a toned down character that wasn't as deep as I personally expected.
MadMeddle 2 years ago 5
While I love Heath's terrifying realistic Joker, I tend to lean a little more towards Jack's Joker because you see Heath's everywhere nowadays and few appreciate Jack's classic comedic creepiness. On Halloween, I must've seen nearly a hundred Heaths running around. My boyfriend decided to dress up as the Nicholson Joker (and I was Harley Quinn) and we quickly got very popular. Can't wait to see the reactions at Comic Con...

i just saw dark knight last night. i think its way over hyped. its a great crime drama, but a terrible batman movie. heath ledger tried to make a more dramatic serious joker that seemed more realistic, but in the end i think it stunk. jack nicholson's joker is spot on. he goes from serious bad guy to crazy psychopath in seconds. tim burtons vision of gotham city and all the characters are far better. i really hate the new batman films. they are "cool", but lack a certain creativity.

i may be the only one when i say this but i think jack napier was a little more sinister than the joker from the dark knight. where heath ledger's joker was outright evil and terrorized people and everyone knew it, jack's jack (see how i did that?) never really let you know he was going to kill you. he let you think he was just business, and was cracking jokes trying to put you at ease and then BAM!- herpes.
flyersfan10 2 years ago 14
I agree! TDK Joker barely laughed. And when he DOES laff it's when he's getting hit..?
The laugh to me, the hysterics of it, is menacing. That's why I prefer the earlier versions a lil more.
BeginnningoftheEnd 2 years ago 8
he also brought another element to the Joker, joking. Other than the pencil trick scene I think Ledger's Joker got a little too deep with his speeches and didn't have jokes in a lot of them. Not his fault because his acting was awsome, but the writers gave Joker too much serious talking and not enough funny talk and deadly joke props. For instance, in the final showdown in this movie Jack is hilarious when he says "You wouldn't hit a guy with glasses would you?" as he puts on joke glasses X0
abridgedserieslover 2 years ago
since the dark knight is more of a movie trying to put a hero in reality, thats why they had him be serious.they wanted a twisted psycho.since older movies took more from the comics they are more true to character.
both are awesome though
lakajd 2 years ago 2
Jack's joker was based on the comic book joker and Heath's was a completely new joker. If they had made Heath's joker tell jokes all the time then it would have seemed like a rip off of Jack's joker. So they made an original character in a different universe in order to create a different character for viewers who had already seen Nicholson's interpretation of the character.

Jack was good as himself as The Joker. Heath was great as just the joker, no trace of Heath Ledger in his performance.
ElvisMusic711 2 years ago

ThrowAnOnion 2 years ago
But regardless of my opinion, Heath did a good job playing his character although I prefer something more traditional. TDK in general was enjoyable and it really brought Batamn back from the dead after having to suffer through Batman & Robin lol.
