None of these logos are scary! To me a lot of them represent pleasant TV nostalgia. And the Bing Crosby Productions logo is only scary if you imagine Bing getting drunk and beating his wife and kids.
Filmways used to have stars of their programs do the "read" over the logo at the end of the program.
In the case of the one here (#3) the voice was Ava Gabor from Green Acres, and she called everyone "Darling" in the show. I always thought they were clever.
To those who don't get the "scary" bit. Imagine you're a kid relaxing and watching TV, when the end of your show comes on. They're fast, and the sound is usually really jarring (just check out the old PBS logo running throughout the 1970s). You feel - well - kind of scared when they pop on because they startle you either visually or through sound. Why? They want you to remember. Who could forget the "Mark VII" bumper Jack Webb's production company had after "Adam-12" or "Dragnet" reruns?
There is nothing made today that is worth remembering or will be remembered 30 years from now....a creative black hole if there ever was one.....back in those days the first few seconds of a show contained more talent and creativity than an entire show does today.
That Screengems thing at the first used to scare me when I was small and The last Screen Gems really scared me as a child. I would stick my fingers in my ears when that BLOO BLOO BLOO BLOO BLOO BLOO BLOOOOOO BLUUUUU BLUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!
The Filmways never scared me but I always thought the logo was a place when I was a kid! And the 20th Century Fox beacons I thought that was a place too!
The rest scared me as a kid.. that Screen Gems and Rankin Bass brrrr.
@monkeeman1966 Oh is that what it is....I watch the DTM reruns on Antenna TV and they abruptly cut off the ending logo to replace it with the modern day Sony logo. I wondered what the old logo was.
Most of these...not that scary. But Bing Crosby Productions and Paramount "Closet Killer" could interfere with your sleep schedule as tiny unwanted earworms that play over and over
Why the hell do they have to speak!? That's creepy!! Thank god they stopped that :p Truth be told, the most horrifying to me was the old Columbia Tristar television logo *Shivers* That conjured up years of terrible childhood nightmares
What really used to scare the hell out me when I was young were the Emergency Broadcasting System interruptions. They were intended to grab a drunk adult's attention but as a young child, seeing them alone would terrify me.
the one that freaked me out the most when I was little was the Lorimar one. Where it was all black with the yellow writing....it was the music I think. And to this day the World Vision logo gives me shivers lol
i would've included the "mod" Looney Tunes (Warner Bros.) intro that goes BONG BONG, BONG BOOOOOONGGG with the strange, harsh geometric shapes... I was always scared of that one.
That last one just seemed like a cheesy porn. The filmways one was a little strange with "darling" and the Paramount one made more sense with your annotation :)
@star8503 The Filmways one in this clip has the voice of Eva Gabor; it was run at the end of every Green Acres episode - she was a major star of that show. Calling people "darling" was her trademark.
@MadameLil Did you see the Filmways presentation announced by Donna Douglas at the end of the Beverly Hillbillies, followed by a dissolve to 'Produced in association with CBS'. (She announced it in her southern accent, which she had to re-learn for "BH'.
Well, i'm surprised that some people are afraid of certain logos, like I do! I'M NOT ALONE! I'm also surprised you haven't mentioned the Ad Council logo...which gave me nightmares since childhood. I'm pretty sure the commercials, and or sound within, make logos seem like a figure of fear.
@Moonberry94 -- The soundtrack to the Filmways logo was different for each of its series. The "Darling" was from Green Acres, and of course it was the voice of co-star Eva Gabor. (The Gabor sisters were famous for throwing the word "darling" into almost every sentence they uttered.) For The Beverly Hillbillies, Donna Douglas would say "This has been a Filmways Presentation" in her best hillbilly accent. So it's not so ridiculous after all.
@Moonberry94 The "darling" was because it was Eva Gabor in Green Acres. Being one of the Gabor sisters, she was always more prone to saying "darling." Filmways always used an actor from the show to say "This has been a Filmways Presentation." If you wanna hear a creepier version, listen to the Ellie Mae Clampett "Beverly Hillbillies" one.
@rockergirl83 Wrong, there's a few Addams Family episodes (most notably the pilot) where Ted Cassidy (in his normal voice) made the Filmways announcement at the end. Now that's creepy.
The only ones that used to scare me were the "Filmways" and Screen Gems "S-from-Hell" logos.
I actually like the Screen Gems "Dancing Sticks"... I remember them from episodes of "The Flintstones". That logo is hard to see nowadays, although it does pop up on TV Land sometimes.
Kayro-Vue is pretty scary, with the low trombones at the start. It would be fun to have a recording of the Paramount theme & sneak up from behind on someone & play it. Or have it as a ring-tone.
OMFG, now I feel much better! Some of the logos definitely scared me, such as the Kayro-Vue, Paramount, Bing Crosby and especially the Desilu logo! In fact, the Lucille Ball cartoon head at the end of The Lucy Show scared me but good when I was a kid....I always thought her head was going to kill me, lol!!
The only one that would really "scare" me as a kid was when that large V from Viacom would come racing up the screen from the back to the front. It still bothers me many years later.
The Scariest Jingles or Logos of All Time, IMO; Paramount (1968-69), (1969-70) Revue & Universal (1955-71), (1973-74) TAT (1980-82) Metromedia Productions (1968-76?) ABR (1986-88) Filmways (1981-83) Time-Life (1976-82) Hanna-Barbera (1968-74) Mark VII (1950's-71), (1971-74) LBS (1980-84) Mca TV (1956-59?) Mimus (1977-78) NET (1967-70) NBC (1960's-72) P*I*T*S (1979-90's) Viacom (1971-77), (1977-88) United Artists (1967-68) Revue (1951-55) MCA TV (early 1950's) Channel 1
Some of them were scary because they were just so darn loud. I was relieved to find out I'm not the only one who was freaked out! (The Screen Gems one never bothered me, though.)
I've seen all these logos at the end of at least one show when I was a kid, and I was never scared. The one I saw the most was the V of Doom. I still look forward to seeing it at the end of classic TV shows today. The Screen Gems so-called "S from Hell" is another favorite. The music isn't scary to me. I actually find it soothing.
Screen Gems was my favorite. The Paramount one takes me right back to the 70s and prime time shows on ABC. Whenever I hear these I start flashing back to scenes in my head of people I knew, places I've been, and moments from my old childhood home, all from a time in the 1970s.
What about the one that used to be on after Adam-12...it had a sweaty arm and hammer hitting something really hard...used to scare the hell out of me.
I remember this one old logo with a big shoe on it that scared the shit out of me as a child. I can't remember the company anymore, all I remember was it was on one of my old charlie brown tapes.
I rememeber all of these logos like they were yesterday. Not a single one scares me, though! It's fascinating that people found them frightening, I guess it may have had something to do with the shows that young kids associated them with.
But the ones that scared the crap out of me and still scares the crap out of me til this day is Universal & Paramount. That wicked music reminds me of somethin coming after me or walkin up on somethin dead. It's the music, Just makes my head and my flesh crawl every time I hear it. lol.
Over the years, I thought I was the only one that use to be spooked by these scary logos. After reading these comments, Now I feel much better that I'm not alone. lol.
That Rankin Bass was done with Frosty the snowman from the 60's. Kinda messed me up there. But I have to say the earlier version of viacom with the pinball like sounds was a little more spookier with the sudden ending.
@ajones35 : Yeah !! I always liked that "pinball sound" of the Viacom logo -- it sounded so robotic and mechanical -- reminded me of Robby the Robot from "Lost In Space" !!
Must be something peculiarly age-specific going on. The "S from Hell" never bothered me, but I was older by then. Screen Gems earlier logo (with the dancing lines) was creepy!
The one I found truly terrifying was the MGM-TV logo, with the wallpaper background. Never ever watched the end of Tom and Jerry. Appeared in plenty of my nightmares, despite all efforts to avoid seeing it.
Rankin-Bass and the NBC peacock felt a bit haunting...not scary though.
What's so scary about Eva Gabor saying the Filmways thing? And hey--I always liked the Universal logo theme! What were you guys--4? when you first encountered these themes? (Okay, the Viacom one is a little ominous, but still...)
@frrrrrunkis Heh, Viacom's "V of Doom" freaked me out when I was two. I didn't stop having nightmares about it until I was well into my teens, but by that time it had more to do with the music and name and less with the actual logo. Yes, I'm weird :-p (The "Viacom Wigga-Wigga scared me as well, but only because I'd been hearing the low-pitched "Viacom" voice in my dreams for a couple years before the logo was even debuted.)
WTF is so scary about these tv logos?! I bet your like those people on The Maury Show, because if your afraid of these antennatv logos. Then your most likely afraid of a jar of olives!!! LMAO!!!!
When I was in college I read in one of my psych textbooks that infants and toddlers are scared of loud noises--which is just what those logos in the 60s were..and why they scared me too! Interesting that in the late 70s, early 80s the logos got more humorous and soft sounding--I bet they were scared as kids too.
@kmtown043 Very true. If more of the responders to this post saw your comment, then maybe they'd understand. The only really scary ones were the variations on the Paramount "closet killer" logos. Very suspenseful, ominous (and loud) music.
@kmtown043 That's actually not surprising, being how the logos I didn't like (but wasn't necessarily scared of) all had loud music and hurt my ears to various degrees. Viacom's V of Doom was the only logo that actually scared me, although I would go on to later be spooked out by the V of Steel and "Wigga-Wigga" logos by extension because of my crazy subconscious. <_< Certainly not scary now. :-p
There is something very odd about the fact that these company logos were scary to lots of people as children. I'll admit there are a few of them that scared me very badly as a child. When they would come on, I would flip out, running out of the room to get away from the TV. I would also do it when the TV would "Sign Off" for the night.
There must be something subliminal about them to scare children. Adults typically are conditioned to seeing them and don't react in the same manner as children.
@akkiekilla Until Jesus returns, this is satan's world. Kids are somewhat more innocent than adults; therefore they perceive more in the spiritual realm. Mass media is often satan's playground, and even things that seem superficially meaningless and harmless can have untold amounts of evil behind them.
@akkiekilla I agree that the TV sign off was definitely scary. I guess it was because the only one I would see would come right after the outer limits, and then it just ended in static. Eghhh!
@aI2TvrQ I had never seen it before until just now when I searched for it. I can see how it would be. There is a subliminal message in it. If you look closely, you can find it. It has to do with the reflection in the water. Children's brains can pick up on subliminal phenomena much easier than an adult brain, but they cannot make sense of it rationally. Instead, it will instill a certain emotional response depending on the message.
The only one I haven't seen in anybody's logo roster is the Four D production logo that you'd see after the Barney Miller closer. When I was little, I thought that was just weird!
I was a 80s kid and now I'm 32 and looking at these logos still give me the chills. dayum these old school logos bring back childhood memories. Kayro-Vue universal along with viacom's V of doom and Paramount closet killer scared the shit out of me!
I dont get it? i was small in the 70's and never had a prob with the ending to any of these .....strange what can bother one person and not another...?
@MultiSantaClaws that was after green acres and za zaa (whatever her name was lol) gabor ....i remember that one too! :) she was hungarian i think and always said darling after everything....
I haven't seen it, but I'll take your word for it.. For some reason, I never found most of those logos to be that scary... unless the studio left them on for a long time.
@YohanMartinoff oh yes this american did and you are effing right bro! i bet it was us 40 and 50 somethings parents generation both sides of the world infact all over to me even the shaw bros logo from the kung fu movies were very disturbing and still are
its cool to see that all over the world we are all the same its a pisser of a shame that there has to be war

That Rankin Bass was done with Frosty the snowman from the 60's. Kinda messed me up there. But I have to say the earlier version of viacom with the pinball like sounds was a little more spookier with the sudden ending.
ajones35 11 months ago
@ajones35 : Yeah !! I always liked that "pinball sound" of the Viacom logo -- it sounded so robotic and mechanical -- reminded me of Robby the Robot from "Lost In Space" !!

@thebloodzone2 Say, what about the Paramount one @0:30? The blood red background with the creepy ass music haunted my dreams for ages! lol
axel4196 11 months ago
Paramount one is pretty creepy jumps out at you. I always thought the old retro PBS one was pretty creepy. The music was at least.

I love how paramount jumps out and yells at you like some ADD kid showing his parents a stick figure he drew.

(Okay, the Viacom one is a little ominous, but still...)

frrrrrunkis 11 months ago
@frrrrrunkis Heh, Viacom's "V of Doom" freaked me out when I was two. I didn't stop having nightmares about it until I was well into my teens, but by that time it had more to do with the music and name and less with the actual logo. Yes, I'm weird :-p (The "Viacom Wigga-Wigga scared me as well, but only because I'd been hearing the low-pitched "Viacom" voice in my dreams for a couple years before the logo was even debuted.)

Is there some particular reason the "Closet Killer" Paramount logo music has that particular name? Was it used that way in some TV show or something?

When I was in college I read in one of my psych textbooks that infants and toddlers are scared of loud noises--which is just what those logos in the 60s were..and why they scared me too! Interesting that in the late 70s, early 80s the logos got more humorous and soft sounding--I bet they were scared as kids too.
kmtown043 1 year ago
@kmtown043 Very true. If more of the responders to this post saw your comment, then maybe they'd understand. The only really scary ones were the variations on the Paramount "closet killer" logos. Very suspenseful, ominous (and loud) music.
elc1960 1 year ago
@kmtown043 That's actually not surprising, being how the logos I didn't like (but wasn't necessarily scared of) all had loud music and hurt my ears to various degrees. Viacom's V of Doom was the only logo that actually scared me, although I would go on to later be spooked out by the V of Steel and "Wigga-Wigga" logos by extension because of my crazy subconscious. <_< Certainly not scary now. :-p

The ten scariest logos I remember:
Viacom's V of Doom
Paramount's Closet Killer and Blue Mountain
WGBH(any logo)
RKO General
MGM's Leo the Lion
Walt Disney Home Video Neon Mickey
PBS heads logo
Reg Grundy logo at the end of Scrabble and Sale of the Century(to be honest, this one has grown on me)
There were others, but I can't remember...

i watched alot of these same logos as a child and was never scared of any logos? wtf is wrong with ppl, really when they're scared of a logo?
miamivicepastels83 1 year ago
There is something very odd about the fact that these company logos were scary to lots of people as children. I'll admit there are a few of them that scared me very badly as a child. When they would come on, I would flip out, running out of the room to get away from the TV. I would also do it when the TV would "Sign Off" for the night.
There must be something subliminal about them to scare children. Adults typically are conditioned to seeing them and don't react in the same manner as children.
akkiekilla 1 year ago 24
@akkiekilla Until Jesus returns, this is satan's world. Kids are somewhat more innocent than adults; therefore they perceive more in the spiritual realm. Mass media is often satan's playground, and even things that seem superficially meaningless and harmless can have untold amounts of evil behind them.
gwugluud 1 year ago
@akkiekilla I agree that the TV sign off was definitely scary. I guess it was because the only one I would see would come right after the outer limits, and then it just ended in static. Eghhh!
Shadowsilverlane 8 months ago
@akkiekilla I suspect of something similar.
Have you ever seen, or else been haunted, by the Thames logo?
aI2TvrQ 7 months ago
@aI2TvrQ I had never seen it before until just now when I searched for it. I can see how it would be. There is a subliminal message in it. If you look closely, you can find it. It has to do with the reflection in the water. Children's brains can pick up on subliminal phenomena much easier than an adult brain, but they cannot make sense of it rationally. Instead, it will instill a certain emotional response depending on the message.

The only one I haven't seen in anybody's logo roster is the Four D production logo that you'd see after the Barney Miller closer. When I was little, I thought that was just weird!
