This is just very good jazz, with the occasional hint to Radiohead, It does what all jazz does and that is, turn into a "look at all the chords I know" feet. 190,000 views because it has Knives Out in the title. 8,088 views because its Brad Mehldau...
Anyone who doesn't like this doesn't understand what they're listening to. An exquisite and exciting interpretation of a song by three superb musicians.
Don't compare it to the original; that's comparing apples and oranges.
jazz musicians are by far the most intelligent, adaptive, and knowledgeable musicians, and maybe even artists in the world. jazz is an art form which requires insane knowledge of complex music theory and crazy chops as mere prerequisites, and then the ability to spontaneously add upon a larger, beautiful idea. a good parallel would be if multiple painters found a canvas, started with a set of colors, and began to, without prior planning, paint a masterpiece, communicating only by brush stroke.
If anyone is interested, here's a dvd quality Mehldau Trio concert from 2006 where they play an amazing version of 50 ways to leave your lover, Knives out, She's leaving home and others.

The tone of his cymbals and drums were mellower, deeper, smoother, and complimented the voicings that brad employs much better.
Also his time was "looser" so that he would act as a counter to brads impeccable and precise time. Having everyone on top of the beat and machine like, is not really musically appealing.
I though Jorge grooved with larry better, and feel jeff just plays over Larry, not with him.

finally, a jazzy thing I don't like. (no offence to those who like this, just not my thing, and if you're wondering why I watched it, I didn't no it would be quite like this)
Jeff Ballard looks like he may be mixing up some stir-fry on the stove when you first watch him, and then you realize what he's playing, the textures he is creating, the comping, building landscape foundations the others work off.... bad-asses all.
I recently started listening to Brad Mehldau, and I'm addicted. This is probably my favorite song that I've heard so far, but if anyone has any better suggestions, I'd be happy to listen :)
@yawnfest I saw a video of them on youtube playing All The Things You Are. Unreal. Such communication, and such a mix. Metheny's melodic soloing with Mehldau and his interesting movement with chords.
Such a shame. I fear many people with this unfortunate affliction replied to this post. If you can't at least appreciate the beauty in this, even if it's not for you.....It's a shame. These musicians have dedicated their lives to becoming the best musicians they could be, so you might want to realize that if you can't hear where they're coming from, then you are probably the problem and not them.
It's just a pity that many people don't have the musical depth to be able to appreciate it. It's really not their fault. Some people are lucky enough to a acquire a high level of music appreciation from their parents or peers, some are taught this at school, and some just miss the boat all together....never getting the memo.....wandering through their lives, essentially deaf to all the beauty (and obvious ugliness) around them every day.

@MisAnnThorpe I'm not saying this isn't a beautiful song, (in fact i am a huge Radiohead fan) i'm just saying they haven't murdered the song at all. It's just a great jazz cover.
@MisAnnThorpe Listen to the recorded version on Day is Done. The levels and tone of the drums on here don't quite do it justice. You'll hear the melody a lot more at the beginning and at other points during the track but don't forget that jazz is improvisatory by nature. Mehldau will use bits of the melody but also move far away from it - both rhythmically and harmonically - in the solos. You'll notice the chord pattern stays pretty much the same as the original.

Why?
The tone of his cymbals and drums were mellower, deeper, smoother, and complimented the voicings that brad employs much better.
Also his time was "looser" so that he would act as a counter to brads impeccable and precise time. Having everyone on top of the beat and machine like, is not really musically appealing.

"Man, Larry Grenadier has such great tone!"
"What a clever line!"
