Good job on the camra work!! it must of been scarry with a huge funnle cloud above you and a terrifying tornado behind you!! You guys must have stoped a copple of times. :)
awesome video. I hated I couldn't be there for that chase. I've only caught two this year. Seems like a lot of the good chase days come when I can't go. Seems like the summer is out doing the spring this year. Maybe autumn will bring a good chase day this year. Who knows.
theFoeles1: google "waterproof camera housing", and you can see a few examples of how it's done. Some camera companies even make their own. At least Canon I know makes them for some of their models.
Very intense - sounded like a roaring waterfall! Dangers: road washed out road blocked by morons taking pics/video (not on the shoulder) gorilla hail strong (80+ mph) wind gusts walls of dust or heavy rain obscuring the road misjudging the speed, size, or direction if the tornado itself satellite tornadoes, which drop unexpectedly and rotate around the main circulation debris blocking road passage lightning, if standing outside traffic - distracted drivers and large groups of chasers etc...
Sounds like a lot, but generally, chasers don't face all these dangers on any particular day. On this chase, we only had to deal with some slow drivers and a little dust. We have faced most of these dangers at one time or another, however.
I don't think so, unless you were the yahoo hanging out of the window of the truck in front of us, insisting on filming from 5 feet away from the funnel, while we were trying to move away from it. I wasn't talking about speed above what is safe. I was talking about a guy driving 15 mph to stay with the funnel, while we were stuck behind him trying to reposition. For the record, I agree with your assessment of the wannabe's. I don't know you, so I will not judge you.
@hammerogod Yeah, once one of these "big name" teams gets killed by some tornado, the government will come up with another law that restricts or possibly prohibits storm chasing, or mandates certification or licensing. Let's hope nobody gets killed; I enjoy these videos and would love to chase storms once I get the chance.
If that happens it will most likely be the fault of Sean Casey and the wannabes who are emulating him.
I have witnessed the madness first-hand on at least 3 occasions and I know for a fact that laws (common road rules) are already being broken regularly and frequently (in May and June in Tx, Ks and Ok and later in the year in the nothern states.
If someone is killed then I pray that is is not some mother with a van full of kinds just trying to get home to safety.
@hammerogod I don't think Sean is an asshole. He has the ability to track and position his TIV for the video shot of a lifetime. Dr. Wurman is a knowledgeable man and is very safe. Unfortunately, his safety record is so good, he fails to intercept the tornado at an advantageous spot, exactly the spot that Sean needs for his IMAX filming. Other than that, I would be glad to meet either fellow.
Near the end of this video, as they were driving away from the funnel, I saw a number of cars parked along the roadside. I've seen this often in tornado videos. Are these people pulling over to watch, or have they taken cover somewhere?
I'm guessing they're gawking because there is enough time to rip right out of there, unless they ran out of gas. ;)
All of them (Well, we hope all of them...) are storm chasers. They are all there to catch the same footage as these two are. And a few of them are there to collect scientific data. So I guess as a way to end this, PLEASE DONT try to storm chase without having experience. That is when it becomes dangerous when you dont know what your doing.
I totally agree. Lots of people not knowing what they're doing can cause a really bad traffic jam at an inappropriate time. It's also a good idea to stay out of the way of people who are collecting scientific data. It's really hard to focus when there's a lot going on.
080Muffin080: FINALLY someone smart enough to understand that. I'm glad to see that actually typed out as a comment, because you rarely hear the chasers say that in their videos. Most of them are meteorologists or studying meteorology in college while they're doing this. They aren't very often just "regular folks" out running around chasing. THAT is foolish. But I always wonder how many YouTube imbeciles will see these kinds of vids and think...let's go do that next weekend! /facepalm
kcgirlgeek, actually, there are just as many non-meteorology studying chasers out in the plains annually as those that are, as you say, studying this field in college. I've done it for over 20yrs, and have never taken any courses in weather. But, like me, most "hard core hobbyists" have an extreme passion for severe weather...and will read books and other materials in the off-season, to ultimately get better at capturing tornadoes when chasing. I've got a vid of this same nader on you-tube too!
i'm gonna be a mereorologist and also stormchase. eheheheh i'm a nerd. i have over 20 weather books. XD this is the kind of footage i hope to get. great vid! 99999999999999999999999999999999999999999999/5!
To my knowledge, all vehicles and passengers survived with a couple of notable exceptions: The vehicles garaged at the farmer's home that was destroyed were totaled, and one chase vehicle had its driver-side window blown out, causing face cuts and a possible concussion. The farhouse family escaped injury and death by taking cover immediately when, while checking the chaser commotion out front, the farmer noticed the wall of dirt approaching!
Whoever that girl is she's a keeper. Huge thrill seeker who maintains composure and with a spot on survival instinct...she knows when you gotta go go go.
ok that thing just looks deadly not as in "im going to scare the living crap out of you" but the "im going to fucking chuck your ass across the united states" deadly... great job lol
And its kinda hard to make it a job... lots of expensive equipment is needed even if your not out there for science. And its hard to keep money flowing in... etc etc etc...

The "Fad" will end when several dozen Amateur Storm Chasers get caught in the middle of an EF4 or EF5 Tornado and find that they have no place to run.
I suppose the Darwin Effect will thin the herd some.
I also think that when the current TV Tornado Binge runs it's course the number of people out on the roads will taper off. Tornado Chasing will always be an interesting hobby but not at the level it currently is.

One of those "Slow Drivers" was me ya schmuck.
Fuck the bunch of ya Paul!
It is getting to be seriously dangerous to drive within 20 miles of a Tornado because of the rolling traffic jam created by the "Chasers".
In Hail, Heavy Rain, Limited Visibility etc those of us with some freakin' common sense slow down.
You damned wannabe "Storm Chasers" need to remember that the road is not your private 'Laboratory'.
One of you self-absorbed asshats is going to eventually get people killed.

I was an innocent bystander just looking to get down the highway.
All I wanted to do was get past the rolling traffic jam and get home.
I'm the sane dude.
If I was in front of anyone it was some other poor schmuck who was trying to do the same thing.
Dr. Wurman told Sean Casey to stay away from the OU sponsored storm team just because Sean is a total asshole who will eventually get someone killed.
I am just waiting for these non-professional Storm Monkeys to get trapped by an EF5.

Sean is out to make a fortune on an IMAX film and Dr. Wurman is doing actual science.
Sean does not have much of my respect or sympathy.
The OU Weather Science Team is trying to gather data that will save lives. (possibly mine).
At no point in time does that require parking inside of a Tornado.
Sean is simply out to make bucks.
I know Dr Wurman (and many of the OU people) personally.
I would like to meet Sean just to tell him that he is a dangerous annoyance.

diftone 2 years ago
@BryanBeatsYouAll
I can tell you exactly what's on their minds:
~They want the idiots standing on the side of the road (or driving 5 mph on the shoulder with cameras out every window) to act like sane adults.
~They are trying to obey the common sense rules of the road and not run over a wannabe Storm Chaser who damn sure isn't paying attention.
I will be so glad when the Storm Chasing Fad goes away.
Then the REAL Science being done by people like Josh Wurman can continue unhindered.
