Many truths make light work & the early to mid eighties were times of rather light & breezy weather for those that had good forecasters, put that down to activists being more concerned with a first strike than the scam of anthropogenic climate change we have today @ least in those days we had real weather & real targets !
Amazing movie, great performances by Baldwin and of course Sean Connery who I personally consider one of the greatest actors who have ever lived. John Mctiernan is a fucking epic director.
If this your own work - Well done, champ! I'd just like to point that in a trailer, you're not supposed to show the ending of the movie, or hint too clearly about it. I'd suggest to cut the last explosions out, and the torpedo miss, but add the whole conclusion of Connery speech ("a great, day, comerades! we sail into history!") to balance it more to thriller genre. Just my huble opinion. Cheers!
This movie along with Das Boot and Crimson Tide is without doubt some of my favourite movies, dnno if its the submarines or just the fact that their so incredibly awsome :P
One of my wife's alltime favorite quotes from the movies was late in this flick. Sam Neill (Ramius' first officer, Vasily Borodin, on the Krasny Octyabr = Red October) has been fatally shot in the chest. As he lies dying in Connery's/Ramius' arms, he whispers, "I would like to have seen ... Montana."
@FrshJurassicPrnceYA i got the joke is good, do you know the last torpedo after ww2 was shot by the British navy in the Falk land war jus a note thanks
no, it is the other russian sub that blows up, the one that is chasing the red october. the russian sailors from the red october and the red navy all believe it is the red october, thus ending their pursuit of it. the red october is then sailed into US waters, and Jack Ryan and Ramius both survive
@aliciacundall They make him speak English with the Russians so that the viewers understand, but he's really speaking in Russian to them (does this make sense?).
I don't know about russian and american SSBN:s (rendezvouz i mean) , but a british and a french boat collided in the deep seas of the Atlantic in 2009
This movie through it's story and acting managed to be entertaining even with a minimal level of action, and that's really saying something with me, and I loved it.
Looks like a real good movie.. what happened to the legit soundtrack, though? This one has the sound to "Crimson Tide" - which was also epic. I wanna see this
@Jyrki1964 All I can say on it is that all subs a quiter at slow speed, and if your sonar tech isn't paying extremely close attention he might miss the needle in the haystack. If there was a needle in the first place...
@Dinhel acording to popular mechanic in 1991 more or less japan has a project to build the toyota maru a transport submarine with the same propulsion, that was how i notice the movie it was mention in the article as far a my memory goes, Hollywood i as accurate as the tom clancy's book thanks
@MegaAddy87 Maybe we need another cold war or something... But nowadays, its seemingly impossible for that to happen... (unless China does something about it)
@MegaAddy87 pffft... North Korea can be squashed, no doubts about it. Sure they may put about a few million kills with their Nukes(if they had any effective ones) and military(soviet era weaponry with some Chinese imports), but the other nations who have a beef with Communism will wrap the NK with nukes many times over, its an Uber slaughter, no fun at all in my opinion.
I'm 15, and this is more off an adult movie (because it's hard to understand the plot).
But since I understand it now I think it is realistic, but... doesn't Marko get shot at the end and have a lot of pain? Why is he suddenly okay after the whole thing is over?
I am russian and this movie is so dumb. Dear Americans pleaaaaaaaase dont be that stupid to believe all the propaganda that potrays russians as weirdos.
@VersusARCH yeah, i like "das Boot"! ...watch "the enemy below" (1957-with Robert Mitchum, Curd Jürgens) and watch "run silent, run deep" (1958-with Clark Gable, Burt Lancaster)>> classic sub-movies!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This movie is just plain and simply stupid. As is the Crimson Tide. And the U-571. The K-19 Widowmaker is a good movie though. And if you want to see a REALLY good sub movie watch Das Boot. Why? Well the last two are at least based on REAL EVENTS, not some action-selling cheap propaganga. And those two actually bring you the atmosphere of fear on board submarines in distress and the acting is far better.
This film is real masterpiece of the 90's. I always wanted to see this movie and finally I did. Fantastic one!!! (just like the book). Sean Connery, Alec Baldwin, Scott Glenn, Sam Neill and others did a great job. Bart Mancuso was my favorite character but I really loved all of them
Reading the book right now, its soo good, very detailed and interesting, the movie is quite good aswell, a lot of things used from the book (thx god) unlike most movies made by books. The cast is choosen wisely.

Hello. I'm the skipper of a russian submarine. But strangely, I speak just like a british spy, King Arthur, the farther of an american archeologist, a dragon and a former british SAS. How odd.
@Phark07 I hold Hunt for Red October as the most faithful adaptation of a Clancy novel into a movie. That being said, movies tend to cut out a lot of interesting subplots and simplify things so it can fit within a single movie if we're lucky. If we're not lucky, we get movies like Starship Troopers and Sum of All Fears.
IN SUMMER 1998, I visited distant relatives of mine in Canada, and I went to the local videoshop borrowing just this movie and many other movie, though I had watched it in German already, but watching it in English is more adventurous, and I wish Germany was as little arrogant about her own language like the Netherlands and would translate with subtitles only. It is quite a handicap for Germans, Italians, French, Spanish etc. not to be forced to watch it in English like the Danish, Dutch, etc..,
@bladesofgloryrocks23 Pretty much. In the movie it isn't really clear what Ramius' intentions are, in fact they kind of imply he could be trying to launch at the US. In the book it talks about why he is defecting and there is politics and other side stories... The book goes on a few hours after the movie ends, and Ramius makes and appearance in Cardinal of the Kremlin, also a good book
Just some mintutes ago i was reading about Jonas Pleskys( and other runaways' stories about how and why they were trying to escape from Soviet union), the prototype of the main character of this movie. Wyi did he rub away? The shortes answer would be: he lived for freedom, he said his native is there where the freedom is. And he was back to Lithuania only once in 1991, for a few months, and he was still afraid of his life.
@esh325 I remember seeing a comedian joking about that in a routine once. He was doing Connery's "Russian Accent" saying, "Get me a crew of Scottish submarine sailors so that I blend in more. Maybe nobody told you: I'm Sean Connery, I played James Bond."
this movie was great but they forget one thing, but wouldn't the use of active sonar just instantly defeat the stealthiness of using these quiet propulsion systems?
@stevewestingale In the book it talks about how Active Sonar is hardly used because it tells other ships more about the pinging ship than the ship they are trying to find, and the idea of submarine warfare is to stay hidden as best you can...
@4me2fun The song is from the movie "Crimson Tide", another very good submarine movie. The song is either "Mutiny" or "Roll Tide". It was composed by Hans Zimmer.
This is probably the best pretend trailer ever. Doesn't really follow the plot, but it sounds better with the crimson tide theme instead of the other stuff.
P.S. Nightwish makes this sound horrible. It sounds SO much better with an orchestra.
@HolyAngemon007 yes, Holy. I know. It's what I was trying to explain. This composition is a lot PRIOR to nightwish. It looks like Tuomas STOLE IT from here.

I read a good chunk of (but never finished) the book. It's mostly conversation...but it's good.
