Of all the musicians I've seen in person, Zappa put on the best exhibitions of guitartistry. When I was a kid I loved his humour, now i just want to hear him wail.
Frank Zappa is every bit as important and valuable to the music world as Jimi Hendrix ...that's saying a whole lot about the importance of Frank Zappa,to put him on the same level as Jimi Hendrix, and it's saying a whole lot about the importance of Jimi Hendrix to put him on the same level as Frank Zappa!
@Eddieguitarloebs Zappa was even more important than Hendrix.........Better chops??? No way! More important to the evolution and respect of american music was the brilliance of Frank Zappa. Shit, Hendrix had to go to another country before America even wanted him. so, keep in mind its not a matter of who was better, its who was more important to American music? Unquestionably FRANK ZAPPA. If anyone disagrees, you're entitled, but ignorant you are.
@MrJusting420 Who said America wanted Zappa? He's a fucking hero in places like the Czech Republic and Lithuania and Germany, but if you ask the average American who Frank Zappa was, If they say anything, it'll most likely be"that guy who sang about yellow snow". He is criminally underappreciated in America.
the true greats are in a musical genre of their own.......Zappa music....is simply Zappa......there is no real comparison to them.....same with Jethro Tull a unique blend of progressive/rock/jazz ahead of the curve for 30 years........same with Iron Maiden truly their own version of the cleanest most technically perfect metal ever.(its what other metal bands tune their equipment too...the ones that tune their shit anyway) a few others...but not many
I'm just starting to get into Zappa. I never really appreciated him up until now. Now he's fast becoming a favorite guitarist and artist of mine. Thanks for uploading this.
Great time to be getting into Zappa. You have about 80 albums to look forward to. Once I realized that Zappa was one of the greatest composers and guitar players that ever lived, Ive been obsessed for 20 years. If you dont have it already get the album Shut up and Play your Guitar
It's really hard to narrow FZ down to a single genre, the Zappa polyrythm sound is unique. If you like heavy guitar rythms then some albums I would recommend are Sheik Yerbouti, Them or Us, Roxy & Elsewhwere, Shut Up 'N' Play Yer Guitar, One Size Fits All, Zoot Allures...I hope you enjoy the journey!
@reldditmot My opinion as a HARDCORE Zappa fanatic is that Joe's Garage is for the 80% of the people that dont really get Zappa,Don;t take that personally.Thats how Frabk felt abou the audience ,that 80% didn't really get it.Get Weasels Ripped My Fleas ,once you can digest all of that, then Hot Rats, then Overnight Sensation,Then start going back between era's and albums tyo get a real sense of Frank's ODOR.
@reldditmot these are very helpful suggestions! i am a bit old fashioned i guess, i'm planning on going to the local record store tomorrow and purchasing an album or two. Just like having the physical copy in my hands for no reason but some reason. Anyways if you were to rank ( i know its difficult because music should really be ranked and Zappa's music especially being so diverse) his best guitar albums how would you rank them?
Hi im a Zappa Fan since July 2007 and i got all his CDs from 1969 to 1984 and his best Guitar Solos are on these CD s, Apostrophe, Roxy & Elsewhere, One Size Fits All, Zappa Live in New York, Joes Garage, You Are What You Is, Them or Us, Does Humour Belong to Music
These CDs are in Cronological Order from 1974 to 1984 Check out the Sharleena Solos from 1988 on Youtube They are amazing
Dood! How have the 2 double CDs with "Guitar" in their title avoided your scholarly approach to Frank's oeuvre? You have critically screwed the pooch by failing to acknowledge the superb triple vinyl juxtapositions of solos & band performances in the "Shut Up & Play the Guitar" series. Stucco Homes, Deathless Horsey,
spring to this feeble fornicator's puzzler right off the top. Enjoy the journey detnyricket! You'll need all 60+ rekkids before you're fully on God's guest list...
@detnyericket Please, I cannot stress enough how much it means to try to understand the guy, if you are just getting into him read his own version of his life story (not what others think of him, his own words) and so very much becomes clear, once you understand the man the rest is so much more complex and beautiful! Genius
@markhayes69 Yes, you get some idea of the man from his auto-biography, but I suggest you read my book Freak Out! My Life with Frank Zappa by Pauline Butcher (released Sept 14) which will give you more insight into how he was at home and how he related to people close to him during 1968 to 1972. He became more cynical with age.
The syncopation between video and audio in the first 15 seconds is amazing. The video of Frank from in 1970 looks like he is playing the same notes as heard in the audio which was recorded 8 or 9 years later.

It's like Zappa is trying to say:
"If you think you figured me out, I've got surprises for you."
FZ cannot be classified he is a genre of his own.
