Escorts are shite. Not quite as shite as Rovers I'll give them their due but they still come under the shite bracket. Changing a gear in an Escort always feels like a fight between arabs & Jews. The stopping power is as powerful as Tiny Tims worn out shoes! The 1st car I ever drove myself was an Escort... Not something I love to admit but I hold my head up high & ignore the laughing & say... The Cosworth engine developed by Mike Costin & Keith was the only thing in the Escort CW that was remotely good about it. They just packed 4WD & a good engine in a 2-door family sized tin-can with 4-seats.

@Britpopliveforever Thing is no Fords were never rust proofed and they still aren't, I can put up with bad build quality such as big panel gaps, thin sheet metal and noisy road noise as I put with with the quality of Fiat Bravo's and Bravas for a long time with rattly steering but rust annoys me more then anything. A car with bodywork that doesn't last is as good as not having a car in my opinion. All Fords suffer from it and they are best avoided.

everyone has an opinion but i would like to throw it out there, i personally do not like the ford escort. i just dont like to drive it. its not something i have alot of fun in. i drive alot of different cars, and its my opinion that i dont like the car. i really dont like much from ford Motorcompany, dont comment this with statistics saying Ford is one of the best blah blah blah, im sure that is statistically a good car. just not my faviriot ride.

Many people have died in fast Ford Escorts because of their appaling build. One time they were the weakest cars ever built among their rival classes. Literally built like Fiat Uno's but a bigger size. All Ford did was face-lift the Escorts dated looks with marginal improvements until the Focus finally came along & took its place. It really was a grim penny-pinching car.

So did I... Tony Greens School of motoring (L) was my Ford Escort... I realised it wasn't me that was a bad driver. It was the dodgey piece of crap that I had to learn in. Bad clutch & crap brakes made me nearly crash all the time. Not to mention unreliable, my cousins Escort 55D van just broke down yesturday. My cousin hates Ford with avengance now, thats 3 Ford vans that have died on him now in a row. Makes sence, my dads Fords he's had over the years have never been sold on, Always scrapped.

er... No, it was one of the "good" rally cars but not the "best" of all time. Lancia & Audi were the cars that were the kings of the rally championship. The Ford Escort was just an iconic rally car but it wasn't the king of rally cars.

Lancia actually won the most championship rally titles in a row over every other manufacturer. They were the only ones to win 8-10x in a row. Audi were 2nd behind Lancia. Audi's & Ford weren't the best cars at all I can't agree at all there, Escorts were built like tin sheds with no quality. The only thing that was worthy was the Cosworth engine & 4WD system - the rest of the shell was a poorly built Escort. You can slap as much Cossie gear on it as you like... Its still just a crap Escort.

No amount of petty argueing over a car that Ford replaced with a Focus is ever going to make me change my mind about it being rubbish. It had a fat body-kit, it had a Cosworth Engine, it had 4 wheel drive, it had Cosworth badges all over it. But what was it under all that clothing? An Escort, & what was an Escort? Crap thats what it was. Thats why it got replaced with a Focus, Because it was appaling. Who cares about Ari Vattanen? I certainly don't, he likes shopping trolleys with fast engines.

When EsCos was created they designed and tested it against Skyline GT-R to compere.

Markku Alén ones say about Lancia S4 is a great and nice car when it works. Main problem are electronics where Italians are well known to suck hard so there is your quality again.

Italians are as equally bad as Ford for electrics & build quality. Ford tends to be like a second Fiat, yes Fords motors had better chassis than Fiat & Lancia but on many Fords they weren't galvanised, lights, e/windows, mod-cons never work, spark plugs misfire & corrode etc etc. Fiat - Fix It Again Tomorrow/Ford - Fixed Or Repaired Daily

Thing is, if the car and engine are looked after, THEY ARE NOT UNRELIABLE. By this time in their lives, all the RS's will have had or be going through an engine rebuild and once thats done, theres nothing to go wrong for a long long time and because theres less electrics in the older cars, theres less to go wrong in the first place. LOL, ford aint unreliable, it's just what people who drive french crappy cars say!

The 55D didn't bloody start properly & the 1.6 kept randonmly spluttering & conking out every so often. he is oke and stil racing. het was driving this rally with his daughter as navigator. they both got out of the car without any minor injuries. het roll cage saved theri lives. the car... well as you all can see that is an total loss.
