I gotta agree with alot of the comments on this video, I thought it would have been much better if that had been a stasis tube and Wonder Woman was instantly put in suspended animation even before she attempted to escape.
The writers of the show ruined what could have been a great two part episode by not letting the villian successfully capture Wonder Woman. With WW remaining frozen inside the tube, it would have been up to the young girl to free WW from her prison and escape the villian's island fortress.I was always disappointed at the ending of The Fine Art of Crime, I really wanted for the bad guys to have won in that episode. It would have a great way to have ended the series with the villians prevailing.
A scene like that also would had been similar to the "Superfriends episode "Swamp of the Living Dead". The Legion of Doom traps all the Superfriends, including Wonder Woman, in coffins under the swamp in exchange for power, but gets greedy and wants more power. When the Legion of Doom can't control the additional power and is being attacked by zombies, they have no choice but to release the Superfriends from the coffins so that they can battle the zombies.
It would have been a really great capture scene if Dr.Bleaker had intended to capture Wonder Woman instead by using the girl as bait. The tube could have been a freezing chamber and before WW had made an attempt to escape, he had threatened to have his men harm the girl with weapons unless she agreed to surrender and allow herself to be put in suspended animation inside the tube. It would have been similiar to thecapture scene in the Fine Art Of Crime episode but more effectiveand a better trap.
It would had been a great capture scene if D. bleaker had used the girl as a hostage and told Wonder Woman that he would kill her unless she handed over her magic belt and golden lasso and surrender. Not wanting to see the girl killed, Wonder Woman would comply with Dr. Bleaker's demands. Dr. Bleaker would place the powerless Wonder Woman inside the tube and put her in suspended animation.
@Girardifan Dr. Bleaker should have kept the girl trapped inside another inescapable glass tube & threatened to fill it up with poisonous gas unless Wonder Woman agreed to become his prisoner and allow herself to be put in suspended animation while inside the tube. He could have also gotten her to hand over her magic belt & lasso to him in exchange for fake duplicates like you mentioned. It would have been a really great capture scene with Wonder Woman facing an impossible can't win situation.
@Fantasizer The writers of the show should have let the bad guys capture and render Wonder Woman helpless & powerless instead of Diana Prince at least in a few of the episodes during the last two seasons. It would have been a great scene if Dr.Bleaker had successfully captured Wonder Woman and froze her inside the glass tube.
@Girardifan If Dr.Bleaker had suceeeded in his attempt to capture Wonder Woman and gotten her to agree to be place in suspended animation while inside the tube it would have been a great scene if he had gotten her to pose exacty the same way like in the Fine Art of Crime episode before activatng the freezing device.
Put her in a cylinder, a giant version of what banks use to take your check & give your money at drive thru's. or what some corporate mail rooms still use !!! Then put her in the delivery system. She'll either be frazzled & nauseous or VERY pissed off ! I used to work in a hospital that used such a system.
@Fantasizer - I can see it. A new product from Ronco. Superhero / Heroine in a tube. Of course the Simpsons did an episode w / Lucy Lawless as the guest VA on that very subject. " Comic Book Guy " was the antagonist.....
Dr. Bleaker should have designed the tube to instantly immobolize Wonder Woman once she was trapped inside and leaving her in a state of suspended animation making her a life-size and priceless collectible Barbie doll preserved inside a tube.
There used to be a plot device where if you could immobilize Wonder Woman by fastening her bracelets together or tying her up - usually w / her magic lasso - she would be vulnerable. I'm not the 1st to say it, some people thought that was a set - up to a bondage scenario.
Again, I'm not the 1st person to bring out this idea.
It used to be that in the comic books, Wonder Woman would lose her Amazon powers when her hands were bound by a man, and, when bound with her own magic lasso, was compeled to tell the truth and/or obey whoever held the other end of the lasso. A lot of feminist groups complained about the amount of bondage in the early issues of the comic books;in the current comic books, Wonder Woman's weakness of losing her powers when she is bound by a man has been eliminated.
I guess bondage in comics would be controversial in any decade, though, considered immoral.
Having heroes / heroines weakened or rendered powerless sometimes weakens their " mana* " ( * Anthropological term.
BTW I used to think it was ridiculous to have Lex Luthor lure Superman or Supergirl into a kryptonite - laden chamber when they're supposed to be smarter than that. Thought I'd mention.
Actually, the whole bondage theme might not had been so controversial if it hadn't been so dominant in the comic books, especially in the early issues where it seemed like no story was complete without at least one scene in which Wonder Woman is either powerless because her bracelets have been chained by a man or she is helpless because she is bound with her own magic lasso. Of coarse, there was always someone nearby to rescue Wonder Woman and she would eventually defeat the bad guys.
& nowadays, that just won't fly anymore, because of the male - bondage / helpless female theme & the Freudian undertones / overtones associated with bondage, I'm guessing.
It is worth noting that when the TV show was on ABC there were a few episodes in which Wonder Woman's bracelets were chained together and she did not lose her powers;on the TV show, Wonder Woman's weakness was the removal of her magic belt. When the show moved to CBS, Diana Prince had no powers unless she changed into Wonder Woman, making it easy for villians to capture her, tie her up and gag her;in several episodes, someone had to rescue Diana because she couldn't change into Wonder Woman.
Have you read comics lately? Most mainstream comics are written by people with no talent and so they kill or maim major characters for shock effect. DC comics is so low on the talent scale that almost every comic must have someone get arms ripped off, disemboweled, beheaded. Theyve moved past bondage. Some may so thats cool but when you realize theyre doing it because they cant write real stories it gets lame.
I usually just wait for the graphic novel opuses. Back in the 90's when Supergirl was killed violently in Crisis on Infinite Earths, that would've been considered extra - violent, to show her costume ripped & bloody. Likewise w / Superman & Doomsday. Yeah, violence is no substitute for real story - telling unless it contributes to the story ( Tell that to Quentin Tarantino !! ).
You say that in the earlier comic books, when she's bounded by her own lasso, she'd have to obey the person at the other end? That's great! Didn't know about that.
Just imagine a superheroine who looks like that, actually wearing a lasso that could create that situation once in the hands of an enemy (or a really lucky guy)... Fabulous!
Actually, there was one episode of the TV series, "Fausta the Nazi Wonder Woman", in which Wonder Woman is bound with her own golden lasso and is compeled to tell the truth. It happens twice:the first time, a Nazi agent uses the golden lasso to compel Wonder Woman to tell him her weakness (the removal of her magic belt) so that he can make her helpless and take her prisoner;the second time, Fausta uses the golden lasso to interigate Wonder Woman.
Such a capture scene would had been similar to the "Superfriends" episode, "Swamp of the Living Dead", in which all the Superfriends, including Wonder Woman, end up in coffins beneath the swamp and put to sleep. Seeing Lynda Carter sound asleep inside the tube would had been priceless.
Ah, the " Superfriends "..... They were part of my teen years, even though they were campy. Cartoon Network used to do spots w / them. One was with the Powerpuff Girls talking about growing up to be like Wonder Woman, especially her " assets ". Very Tongue - in - cheek.
It would have been a superb capture scene if Dr. Bleaker disigned the tube to iinstantly immobolize Wonder Woman, in a blinding flash of blue light she would be left asleep in a standing position just like that Superfriends episode. Or the Dr. could have also designed the tube to have been a cryogenic freezing chamber which would have frozen WW in an instant and left her as a frozen ice statue while the little girl looked on in shock & disbelief while the Dr. would be laughing in evil triumph.
Instead of just trapping Wonder Woman in a tube, which she can easily escape from, the villian should had filled up the tube with sleeping gas and knocked out Wonder Woman;then, when Wonder Woman awakened, she could had found herself tied to a chair with her own golden lasso and unable to escape. The horrified look on Wonder Woman's face would had been priceless. But none of the villians on the CBS version of the show were smart enough to think of something like that.
It would have been a better capture scene if the tube was designed to put her in suspended animation. Once the trap was sprung, she would be instantly frozen before she even had a chance to raise an arm. The only thing should would be able to do is speak and move her eyes and not be able to move a single muscle. It would have been really cool to see the doctor circle around her while she was imprisoned inside the tube and he would be gloating about how simple it was to capture her.
I must agree, that would had been an excellent capture scene. The horrified look on Wonder Woman's face when she realized she couldn't move would had been priceless. And imagine the dialogue they could have had. Wonder Woman:"You won't get away with this! I'll stop you somehow!" Doctor:"How do you intend to stop me? You can't move a muscle as long as you are imprisoned inside that tube, and I'm never letting you out! No, Wonder Woman, it is I who have stopped you!"
I saw a similiar scene in another old sci-fi TV show where a character is imprisoned inside a tube and is only able to speak and not move a muscle. I wish the writers of the Wonder Woman show would have thought of that and placed her in the same situation in this episode.
Instead of using a regular glass containment tube to try to capture Wonder Woman, the evil doctor should have installed a cryogenic tube which would have frozen her instantly.
Almost all of the old shows had stupid episodes like this that were attempts to use someone elses property to help them start theirown show or a "spin off." They had a couple more attempts on Wonder Woman like "The man who could not die"
I have read that the the producers of the Wonder Woman TV show wanted to give Debra Winger, the actress who played Wonder Girl, her own show, but she turned it down. From what I understand, the show would had been a spinoff of Wonder Woman and would had featured Wonder Girl in solo adventures.
Debra Winger was a big name for about 5 years after Officer & a gent. During that time she looked back on the show and said the Lynda Carter tried to make sure that Wingers makeup and etc. werent done in a way that she wouldnt look too pretty. I dont know if thats true but Carter wouldnt need to worry like that. They probably were attempting to do a spinoff. The Hulk had alot of episodes that were spinoff attempts with Mako, Rick Springfield, etc.
I don't know if that's true or not, but I have read that Lynda Carter could be difficult to work with. But even if it was true, debra Winger wouldn't have had to worry about Lynda Carter on her own show, unless the producers did an episode featuring Wonder Woman and Carter made a guest appearance.
That particular episode of "The New, original Wonder Woman" did make Wonder Girl look bad;not only was Wonder Girl chloroformed twice, she doesn't even use her golden lasso to find out where General Blankenship is and she is tricked into revealing the location of Paradise Island.
This is one of my favorite scenes from Lynda as WonderWoman. The only thing I'd change is to make the Dr. shrink her with a shrink ray while in the tube. Lynda did look fantastic in her costume!
For the movie version. My pick would be "Charlize Theron" as Wonder Woman. (Remember: Aeon Flux) And if; they did decide to bring back Wonder Girl, (Remember - Debra Winger) my pick would be a young "Megan Fox".
I gotta agree with alot of the comments on this video, I thought it would have been much better if that had been a stasis tube and Wonder Woman was instantly put in suspended animation even before she attempted to escape.
