@ oneraggednoboby. Obviously you don't know all the artists he's played with and his solo career, except for maybe your Zappa reference bcuz you brought up Steve Vai. I don't see your videos anywhere let alone with any major artist. Who are you? Oh that's right, NOBODY. And that's my opinion, since we're all assholes. Hardly boring.
i remember watching terry bozzio videos when i first started drumming and think "this shit is soooo boring what is he doing!?" i've matured as a musician and as a drummer and now i come back to this years later being able to comprehend how complex and amazing this is.
I think people putting Terry Bozzio and Neil Peart in the same context is completely missing the point of the vast spectrum of drumming musicality. I think Neil is certainly an excellent drummer, but Terry's spiel is not so much about grooving as it is about exploring poly-rhythms and exploring rhythmic compositions over ostinatos. That's what makes drumming just as much a musical instrument as any other.
I understand that he plays this kit well, and I do enjoy his recent drumming on this kit a lot. His musicality and grasp of time and rhythm is astonishing. But sometimes I think guys like these should be put back on a 2 tom, 1 crash, 1 ride kit for a while... Might do em a bit of good.
@senhorronable I think your metaphor is a bit broken, this huge kit is not an "upgrade" or an "advancement", it's just sort of masturbation at some point.
@crenshawjeffrey You are of course entitled to have that opinion, but I guess you do get my point...
In case you didn´t though: you say that it ´might do them a bit of good´ to get back to a basic kit and to me it is unclear why that would be the case.
Secondly, what makes you say that this huge kit is not an advancement? Can you play several octaves on a basic kit?
@crenshawjeffrey Clearly what he's creating isn't about simply rhythm. This isn't him being excessive and trying to show off by having more pieces, this is him creating a different sound you wouldn't get from a 2 tom, or 1 ride kit.
I'm sure if he went went to those kinds of kits he'd be just fine, but clearly that's not where he wants to develop his skill.
Nice to see someone above the normal top 40 type of drumming. You know,All the copiers and play only what is hot right now.Your basic do what they tell ya to do if you want to be sponsered by us! I hate that crap and people buy into it like its the best of the best. And its all just a big promotion to get the typical dumbass to buy there shit.Yeah, you know who you are!Its like this,If you like a certain brand name, you have been brainwashed!
seems like he 'free styles' this melodic crap into thinking its good. It's decent, his talent is good, but as for putting together something that coherent and bright, he is no neil peart.
You think this is boring ? skip to 3:10 and say that again. Hes playing a difficult pattern with his feet, hes looping a melody with hes right hand while soloing with his left... FUCKING GENIOUS !
Bozzio really is something else. I remember the first time I actually got what he was attempting and accomplishing I was like 'NO WAY JESUS MOTHER OF FUCK THIS CAN'T BE SERIOUS'. My brains turned into bubblegum. Inspiring.
Every drum has a tone a different colour that togeher makes it sound like a 3D gigantic xilophone. ut when Bossio attacks with the bassdrum then the rythmic pulse comes about and this all sounds in conjunction what it is: A gigantic drumset played by LOCO master!
Still not a major fan of his style, but I can respect this solo somewhat. I see both sides of the fence. Some will like it, some will hate it. It's not a typical groove, but there is some melodic artistry to it. Not super complicated and syncopated, but interesting anyway.
This guy did first class solos back in the 80's, comparable to all the greats. He's now older and has approached a revolutionary technique to playing drums making full use of his giant drum set.
An old drummer will see this and wonder at the skill. A young drummer will get pissed off and head to their kit. Hold on to the rage of "I can do better!", you can. You will.
@jainbain if you would have been a real musician/drummer you would have kept litsening and come to the point when he does 4 fucking beats at the same time. NOBODY in the world can touch him.
For those who think this is a drum solo: it is not. This is a musical composition written and performed by a master musician. Probably the most advanced drummer ever in the history of drums.
Yeah, that 7/8 ostinato is diabolical, but what I admire more is Bozzio's melodic control. Every note that Bozzio plays on the toms or cymbals accompanies or embellishes those two opening themes: (0:20 - B-flat, E-flat, A-flat and 0:28 - repeated group of seven eighth notes). Bozzio definitely performs this solo with lots of technical brute-force, but also with a fascinating musical sensitivity.
Wondering about the title? 1260 North Wetherly Drive is a large home in West Hollywood, California. It is the former residence of composer Igor Stravinsky. Two bedrooms, three baths.
I've been playing drums for a little under 10 years. I've grown to appreciate such drummers like Buddy Rich, Mike Mangini, Thomas Lang, Neil Peart, and the rest. Terry Bozzio fails to impress me. All I see here is simple rudimentary stuff and gimmickry. I fail to see any sort of special unique skills, like Mike Mangini's use of one-handed rolls and polyrhythm technique.. Terry still uses high school indoor perc band stuff. I could be wrong... I don't know. Someone show me the light?
@Lateralus03 don't look at Dr. Bozzio's technique. Listen to his playing. Ignore the time signatures and meters. He plays notes, like a pianist. a better example of that would be one of his other performances from this Concert, "Djon Don". You're trying to hard to compare him to drummers with great technical skill, don't. He's very technically sound, more so than Pert, or lang, or Mangini, but that isn't the point. Listen to the sound, and the notes he plays rather than examine his skill.
Any percussionist would know that 1:32 is unbelievably challenging for anyone. His feet were going in a 7/8 time signature while his hands remained in 4/4 progressing from quarters to trips to eights. Bozzio appeals musicians...not drummers... You feel me?
@StefinEG Well, im a drummer and as you said, its like his feet and hands are independent of eachother, but still they are perfectly in time and harmony. Its unbelieveable! Nobody can come close to his coordination skills. Hes the greatest Percussionist/drummer/musician i have ever seen.
What with everyone saying this is a "solo"?? This isn't a solo. He is a Soloist. Meaning he performs by himself. This is a story, a song. To sit and hear this, and not only hear, but listen, is incredible. I agree...if you think this is boring, you don't have the understanding of what is going on. Its no offense to anyone, but chances are, you have so much room to grow as an "artist" and you don't know it.
It's hard to hear exactly what his feet are doing because of the audio, but it's R--LL-R-LLL CONSTANTLY, throughout the performance starting at 1:08. Try doing that at tempo for 7 straight minutes. Then improvise on top. To be able to play anything so complex against an ostinato like that is astonishing, and 5:12 - 6:02 literally frightened me. This guy's so advanced he eludes most people's radar.
I can pretty much do most of what he does here but it doesnt do anything for me.
Ive seen drummers like Fred Coury do a more interesting solo.
I am a drummer serious whatever you wanna call it but i wouldnt waste peoples time at a gig doing this.
In your own time this is good for pratice.I know theres Terry wanna bees but if you want to do a solo at a gig please do a solo that is intresting. As i said in my last comment 5mins in it sounds like his going to rise but it goes down hill again.
@pece335:12 .... DUDE! How the hell could you possibly play that. His feet and hands are doing 2 different patterns and they are totally different. And ITS PERFECTLY ON TIME! You obviously dont know shit about litsening and understanding what hes doing. You probably watched 30 secs and thought: "this is booring".
@pece33 If you are a serious drummer, and this was boring to you, then you obviously havent reached a point where you understand what is going on here!!! Hopefully that will change as time goes on!! This IS world class drumming, and to call it anything else is simply a lack of knowledge.
@VitRadek Sure I have, but, even an opinion has to be based on something!! I stand by what I said,if you are a serious player, and this is boring to you, then there is a good chance you dont understand it!! You dont have to like it,but,it makes a person sound foolish, when they bash someone with otherworldly skills like this!! And for all the people on here claiming that they could play this,as good or better, please post a video of this triumphant event,if its true I will gladly give it up for you!!
@bobbystockerdrums I didn't notice anyone bashing him. I think Terry Bozzio is a great player and musician, but I don't like what he plays and I find it not very entertaining... Bashing any drummer (well maybe except Justin Bieber :D) is ignorant...
I prefer drummers like Benny Greb and Steve Gadd though...
@bobbystockerdrums This is not "only" technology, but sound, which is varied and just awesome! Ingenious and NOT boring! Those who claim that this drum solo is boring, have not even understood this instrument!
@pece33 well terry played this at drum clinic meaning there was hundred of drummers in that buliding, not a big concert venu, he was performing many about the drums and there was people in there that only cared about the sound, and movements of the drums
i do not usually like drum solos because I am not a drummer myself so I lack the appreciation capacity. BUT this guy makes music with his drumming man. He paints pictures and tells a story! ART!
Maybe I still poorly versed in the technique of playing the drum set, but I think his technique is also high enough! ;)
