i thought originally kung fu was the word used to describe one's hard work and skill in anything (not necessarily martial art).

kung fu is cantonese.

it can be used to mean "martial arts" or "skill/ability" depending on the context. It's understood to be both. I don't know which meaning came first though.

you can say "you practice kung fu?"

they will know u talking about martial arts.

or alternatively if someone is cooking and you say " your kung fu is great", they will understand you are talking about their cooking abilities.

its very easy for sanshou fighters to win fights on points when all they have to do is grab a leg

yeah under fire.. from a one legged man.. very dangerous. Ive had sparring partners do this to me it catches me off guard since I mostly do kyokushin (were not allowed to grab the kicking leg of an opponent just parry it). after they get cocky doing this a few times I act like Im gonna kick them middle again then strike them in the head its funny.

He was born in Vietnam but rasied in (and fights out of) San Diego. And San Shou is still his predominant fighting style along with a little TKD and College wrestling. Where he's from has nothing to do with what he does.

the all style open competitions has many different divisions, there are 4 divisions, Class 1 with punching to the head(a lot like kickboxing), Class1 with no punching to the head ( like the first class but with mma gloves and only kicks to the head). Those 2 divisions are for experienced fighters with merits. Then there is class 2 which also has 2 divisions, but this one is for unexperienced fighters without merits. and no ko's are allowed in class 1 or 2.

from what i see here, sanda/sanshou is a system that combines most of chinese kung fu together, and theres not ground fightning because there is no style in chinese kung fu that has ground fighting. san shou sport fighting/sparring however - like all martial arts sparring - has a set of rules that promotes the use of what their martial arts is good for

San shou = free hand in chinese iirc. Kind of like kickboxing/muay thai + a whole lot of throws. For some strange reason this is often called san da.

San Da = free fighting in chinese iirc. Oldschool rules used to be very similiar to modern MMA. When people talk about kungfu they mean chinese martial arts, there are plenty of groundfighting in chinese MA´s, however this is rarely seen in the movies so most people dont know about it. China is a BIG country, ofc there is ground fighting :)

the ground fighting in chinese martial arts is usually a submission/locks connected to the takedowns. there are headlocks, armlocks, ankle locks, head cracking but unlike BJJ, they start from a stand-up point.

the ground fighting in chinese systems includes qin na, praying mantis, drunken, ditangquan...many more. Youtube has you all used to seeing the taolu people(forms only), it's like capoeira vids really only focus on the tumbling...so much more in this world but if you keep watching only the vids, guess you'll keep thinking there's no more to see. check out wing chun also...sanshou is only the sport, not a style, that's mistake number 2 people keep making.
