it can be used to mean "martial arts" or "skill/ability" depending on the context. It's understood to be both. I don't know which meaning came first though.
you can say "you practice kung fu?"
they will know u talking about martial arts.
or alternatively if someone is cooking and you say " your kung fu is great", they will understand you are talking about their cooking abilities.
it is as you said, skill through hard work, wich u generally get in martial arts, see hung gar kung fu for instance. but yeah, the west has got in on the backfoot and thinking that kung fu is martial arts, so today if you talk about kung fu everybody understands that you are talking about MA..
and attempt a sweep, during that time you are open for fire by the opponent, thus you need to be fast and got the skill, not just grab a leg.. dumb ass
yeah under fire.. from a one legged man.. very dangerous. Ive had sparring partners do this to me it catches me off guard since I mostly do kyokushin (were not allowed to grab the kicking leg of an opponent just parry it). after they get cocky doing this a few times I act like Im gonna kick them middle again then strike them in the head its funny.
I hate seeing this old school kickboxing dude gives my favourite sport a bad name. I think i saw one of those dead set hands down tkd stances , maybe not kickboxer?
is a shame no chinese sanshouers r in MMA...I'm in sanshou but I know we r disadvantage to jujitsu-like figthers, how ever our throws r very impresive...jejeje
He was born in Vietnam but rasied in (and fights out of) San Diego. And San Shou is still his predominant fighting style along with a little TKD and College wrestling. Where he's from has nothing to do with what he does.
None of you took the time to read what I wrote, or I was writing in a Dostoesky style....what Isay is that CHINA being one of the countries with more history on martial arts, doesn't have any CHINESE representant in the foreing mma championships. Now about Cung Le, his a badass, puting the name of sanshou in mma.
the all style open competitions has many different divisions, there are 4 divisions, Class 1 with punching to the head(a lot like kickboxing), Class1 with no punching to the head ( like the first class but with mma gloves and only kicks to the head). Those 2 divisions are for experienced fighters with merits. Then there is class 2 which also has 2 divisions, but this one is for unexperienced fighters without merits. and no ko's are allowed in class 1 or 2.
its alot more complete version of kungfu and its really great but its missing the ground fight, like bjj, the take downs are great but they need some ground fighting
that's true :) but they aren't really fighting styles but more like a set of rules. you can do whatever you want (kick boxing, wing tsun, whatever) but sanshou is the rules you have to fight by
from what i see here, sanda/sanshou is a system that combines most of chinese kung fu together, and theres not ground fightning because there is no style in chinese kung fu that has ground fighting. san shou sport fighting/sparring however - like all martial arts sparring - has a set of rules that promotes the use of what their martial arts is good for
San shou = free hand in chinese iirc. Kind of like kickboxing/muay thai + a whole lot of throws. For some strange reason this is often called san da.
San Da = free fighting in chinese iirc. Oldschool rules used to be very similiar to modern MMA. When people talk about kungfu they mean chinese martial arts, there are plenty of groundfighting in chinese MA´s, however this is rarely seen in the movies so most people dont know about it. China is a BIG country, ofc there is ground fighting :)
i disagree with your statement "China is a BIG country, ofc there is ground fighting :)" right to the bone. its like saying Planet Earth is enourmous, ofc there are dinosaurs still around.
it is a combination of many sports but not jujitsu which means no ground fighting ,, I would say that to beat some1 who does sanda,,,take him to the ground !! then he is done ,, too bad ...cuz I love sanda
the ground fighting in chinese martial arts is usually a submission/locks connected to the takedowns. there are headlocks, armlocks, ankle locks, head cracking but unlike BJJ, they start from a stand-up point.
the ground fighting in chinese systems includes qin na, praying mantis, drunken, ditangquan...many more. Youtube has you all used to seeing the taolu people(forms only), it's like capoeira vids really only focus on the tumbling...so much more in this world but if you keep watching only the vids, guess you'll keep thinking there's no more to see. check out wing chun also...sanshou is only the sport, not a style, that's mistake number 2 people keep making.
@schparky well the sah shou u see here was forced upon the chinese by the teh westernized guys. but they had a more technical and traditional the westernized guys were jsut like ur with u or ur out. but eh chinese chin woo gym club association still teaches the san shou trad. system
hey which one is the sanshou guy?? cause in the other video, u said the sanshou wore long pants but the guy in shorts seems to be doing a lot of sanshou take down.... anyways u sanda guys rock!!!

It seems like non of youtuber know what kungfu is...
Kungfu is develope from secret society that try to chase away invasion even without weapons...
Flying kick is originally design to kick horse mounted warrior of they horse...
It must be very effective and cover all area of fighting, offensive, and defensive...
Thats kung fu
pangyf25250 2 years ago
i thought originally kung fu was the word used to describe one's hard work and skill in anything (not necessarily martial art).
for an accomplished violinist, their kung fu would be their violin playing.
i think wikipedia says something similar
im not trying to call you out, i really just want to know which it is.

kung fu is cantonese.

Probably a semi-contact fight, looking at the force and the light gloves.
