@Tufnelle No, you and every single other person who comments on Genesis videos on YouTube.
I, for one, disagree. I think the old songs sounded better when sung by Phil too. Peter was a great showman, and had a great solo career, but Phil's voice fit more seamlessly with Genesis' sound.
Why can't we get the version of Turn it on again from the three sides live concert? I mean we can hear and see this but not turn it on? No sense. Same thing with the original video of I don't care anymore. I don't get it.
Little known fact: The Sega Genesis version of Mortal Kombat's blood code button sequence was named after this song, which was A-B-A-C-A-B-B. But I'm not sure why they added the extra B.
They sound so tired here, where's the energy guys?? Buck up fellas, you may have lost good old PG and his crazy antics, but you're about to make tons of money!!
I love Phil and Chester on the drums in this song. For those who think Phil is trying to draw attention to himself with his style of playing, i have two responses: 1) the drumming in the live version is much more interesting precisely because of the drum fills and rolls, and 2) Phil drawing attention to himself? PLEASE! He replaced a lead singer who did everything possible to draw attention to himself with his constumes, stories, and stage mannerisms. Compared to Gabriel Phil is a wall flower.
@raelraven3 I have to agree with the previous comment, in part. Phil is a complete attention whore but a damned talented one. He's a fantastic Drummer with an outrageous voice. To be a great "front man", one almost has to thrive on attention, and love being in the limelight. As for Peter Gabriel drawing attention to himself, I don't think he's at all about gimmicks; he's just exceptionally odd, and his style draws attention. He's also an absolute genius.
@irshgrl500 I'm a huge PG fan. I love his music and stage presence. At the same time, I have no doubt that he is as starved for attention as any singer. Peter himself has admitted that he was jealous of the success of the Trick of the Tail album precisely because it showed that the band could thrive without him. Also, clever sexual referenes aside, I wouldn't exactly call songs like Sledgehammer, Steam, and Kiss That Frog non-commercial. Peter hasn't been above making a buck!
@raelraven2 Thanks for the reply.Perhaps Peter's jealous admission was more of a self-realization, and coming to terms with his own self. I know Peter plays it "low-key" but in reality, has been very savvy, with his choices. He's definitely not a Bono, who IMHO, is nothing but empty air, with talent running a muck, in the market for a Nobel Peace Prize; a real phony. I'd like to think Peter's efforts, and actions are genuine, but not all ultraistic.
Collins is such an attention whore - Banks and Rutherford are professional and on the mark while dipshit's back there making sure everyone didn't forget about him by throwing in tom tom rolls and fills fucking up the whole song. His vocals and improvisations were awful too.
@midgetsuicide Phil's vocals are brilliant. He has an incredible voice. As for being an attention whore,,,,, MOST rock front men are, and that is part of the allure. As for fucking up this song, you're clearly in the minority.
What makes these guys great is that they're all on the same page in their style, and play an equal part in the importance of the band in this song. That isn't easy to find!
This video is one of those that is just classic. I love how Tony Banks doesn't even start getting his mic ready until :20 in to the video. Can't even tell you how many times I have watched this video over the years. Thanks, Genesis!
I love how it is :20 in to the video and Tony Banks is just starting to get his mic. ready. This tune is awesome. I can't tell you how many times I have watched this video and never cease to be amazed by it.
Just bought my first synth...A Juno Gi...now I gotta find the right sounds out of the 1300 sounds built in so I can begin trying to figure out how on earth to play this song!
@brickmaster24 ..Hey c'mon. Tony must have had thought the same thing you're saying when he was learning to play. Give yourself some credit, at least you know what real music is, and you're not learning it from some punk like justin bieber.
For me i'm in my 68 Beetle hearing this on my single speaker FM back in 85. Great times today sucks. IPODs and gadgets make everything common place and routine. There is NOTHING original or special today. Fuck you 2010.
I like this song! There is this blog called SongSense.info where they tell you what the song really means. I can't believe what some songs are really about. I never would have imagined some of it. Cool Stuff.
Excellent version, although i wish they didn't dub in those ridiculous audience noises near the start. Also, just a small technicality--this is from the "Abacab" tour, which was recorded and released on the Three Sides Live album and video. The tour in support of the Three Sides Live album was called the "Encore" tour.
God, those synth stabs in the instrumental section... Like they were ripped from some dark sci-fi video game. If that ain't why Tony Banks is the shit, or his other keyboard exploits... phew...
WOW! this song still sounds GROUNDBREAKING, just like it did when I heard it as a kid. When moma gave me that weekly $10 allowance for doing my chores, I remember buying this Genisis album along with KISS, RUSH,BOSTON, FOREIGNER,YES and SAMMY HAGAR! Still love my good ol ROCK AND ROLL to this day!
this song woke me up to synthesizers. course i was 11-12 and couldn't afford one. what they had at the department stores were like Casio mt-40's and totally out of my price range, and not what i would call a synth. I ended up with a 20 dollar keyboard that i had no idea what to do with. Frustrating to a kid who just wants awesome music to just come out without the work put in. It was also cheaper than what I really wanted, which was a toy e.guitar with one string being sold at the same time
I used to sing this song when taking multiple choice tests. Genesis was a great band back in the day. It cracks me up that people refer to them as a trio. Yes, they had three core founding members Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks. But they were augmented by other musicians. Chester Thompson and Daryl Mark Stuermer were fantastic. And Genesis was a top act. But I never considered them a trio.
Probably because after they replaced three drummers and when Peter Gabrial, Anthony Philips and Steve Hackett left the band, leaving the group with the three core members, plus the 1978 "...and then there were three..." album.
They're bass pedals, which give a totally different sound to guitar. Rush use them extensively, for example, and they are a feature of many prog and neo-prog bands.
what a voice this guy had. I remember roller skating to this song in the eighties. I don't think I was dork technically but now that I think about it, it's a tough call. But this music was classic and we knew it back then. What a great decade for music.
I know that. Genesis were allowed to have bad shows and that's rock and roll. Only KISS and Genesis filmed shows where they left mistakes in (many bands doctor from other shows). I've heard about eight versions of Abacab in its live form (TSL vid and album and Frankfurt from '81, Marquee '82, Philly '83 (which I posted, great version), Birmingham '84 (another great version), NYC '86 (I have up and another kick ass version) and of course Wembley '87 (arguably best live version to many fans)).
A buddy of mine works at Atlantic studios in LA and he was the head engineer on the KISS live album from the late eighties and he said they went in and recorded over almost all their parts on that "live" album. Pretty much all artists do it. It is common practice.
The recordings on KISSOLOGY DVDs all had zero fixings (no overdubs) as was the Three Sides Live VHS. Since the '80s, technology's improved where now Pro-Tools and so forth can either electronically fix a bad note in a performance or they can copy and paste solos from a different show on to performance of choice for a live album/DVD so going back in to re-record is unnecessary (when Pink Floyd made PULSE, they recorded 20 shows and if a bad note, they'd go to another show for a solo they liked).
I wouldnt even COMPARE Kiss w/ Genesis--to me that's an obscene joke--Kiss was fun, I'll admit (and being from NYC myself I'm loyal to them) but NO WAY could they even kiss the feet (no pun intended)of a classically brilliant band as Genesis who are in Tull and Yes's league. Let's face it, with all their bravura, Paul Stanley could only play three freakin' chords total. No offence.
ya think? it wasnt MOI who MADE the comparison--I read it in here earlier..
anyway, yeah Gen had kick-ass keyboarding--thx to Banks
this is such a great song--ABACAB !!! (collins shouldnt have went off to do his wussy-ass solo stuff--he was a GOD in Genesis (almost as great as Gabriel..but not quite)
Phil was a workaholic and music was his main hobby whereas Mike Rutherford had polo and Tony Banks gardening so Phil was guest appearing, producing, making solo albums and Genesis albums and so forth in the 1980s like no tomorrow. What stopped him was when he got a bad ear infection in 2002 and lost a bulk of hearing in left ear. I compare Phil to David Gilmour of Pink Floyd as both men helped make respective bands who they are now.
Personally, I still prefer the OLD Floyd (the early incarnation when Syd Barrett held the proverbial "reigns"(although Gilmour is a transcendant musician, no argument from me)--I feel same way about Genesis (first stage) when Gabriel's flair for theatrics made the band more colorful and subliminal, IMHO
I'm always reminded of another band--w/ nothing in common w/ P. Floyd, but went through a similar re-birth when major personnel changes took place: The Doobie Brothers. When Pat Simmons and Tom Johnston left (taking their rock and country-fied sensibilities w/ them), that band was reborn into the jazz/rock fusion great it became w/ the advent of Michael McDonald
Yeah, Phil doing his solo stuff was like Sting leaving the Police to do his "artsy", fluffy solo stuff. Not sure why successful musicians do that sometimes, but it really f-cks with the fans, who rarely migrate over to the new genre.
Anyway, it was good to see both bands a couple years back.
Genesis, Jethro Tull and Pink Floyd were in the same league. Yes and ELP were great also but the former three are held in higher regard than the latter two. My favorite of the British prog bands were Genesis and Pink Floyd then Jethro Tull then Supertramp then ELP then Yes. The non-British prog bands that were phenomenal were Rush, the original Kansas lineup and before they changed its sound was Styx (they like Genesis strayed away from art rock once punk/New Wave hit).
I agree w/ you about Emerson, Lake and Palmer , floydgenesisnut--(Greg Lake being my fave as former King Crimson bassist) but in their day they were highly esteemed(Brain Salad Surgery aside, Pictures at an Exhibition was superb)--but I dont fall in w/ public "opinion" regarding Yes--they still rank extremely high w/ me.
as for Kansas--they thrived for a period w/ Leftoverture--but as for Styx..what can I say..I had a brief teenage flirtation w/the Chicago-based band in the late 70's, but later when they put out stuff like the abysmal Mr. Roboto---I was through w/ them..
I like Genesis and I like this song and I don't really give a fuck if they miss the occasional note still sounds better than all that X Factor bollocks we get today.
the best part of the song for me is the final i mean 6:31 to 7:49 and the best best part is 7:50 to the end for this part is the best music created by genesis without steve hackett

Phil Collins con i capelli????!!!!???

As Behind the lines has a great opening guitar lick, Abacab has one of the best song ending guitar solos on a Genesis song.

WOW! this song still sounds GROUNDBREAKING, just like it did when I heard it as a kid.

It was also cheaper than what I really wanted, which was a toy e.guitar with one string being sold at the same time

awesome performance right here nontheless.

Why didn't anyone tell Phil to take his hands out of his pockets? Love him, but it looks so dorky!
zenon777 2 years ago
Yeah, he doesn't show much stage presence on this one, does he? Great track, nonetheless.

I love the Genesis era with Phil as the lead singer so much as the Gabriel era.
lesassassins 2 years ago
yeah when Ray Wilson joined it was gonna go down the hole
Segacamp 2 years ago
been a fan of Genesis since the days when Gabriel was still a wee mushroom and Phil still had hair (lol)
all jokes aside, one of the greatest bands in history (in both Peter's AND Collin's eras)
GUIDOBRAT 2 years ago
I used to sing this song when taking multiple choice tests. Genesis was a great band back in the day. It cracks me up that people refer to them as a trio. Yes, they had three core founding members Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks. But they were augmented by other musicians. Chester Thompson and Daryl Mark Stuermer were fantastic. And Genesis was a top act. But I never considered them a trio.
Jefgg 2 years ago
Probably because after they replaced three drummers and when Peter Gabrial, Anthony Philips and Steve Hackett left the band, leaving the group with the three core members, plus the 1978 "...and then there were three..." album.

I don't understand - the bassist is using organ style pedals while playing the bass - is that to have synth bass and electric bass at the same time
mashinkle 2 years ago
those are bass pedals...
svenssoncorps 2 years ago
They're bass pedals, which give a totally different sound to guitar. Rush use them extensively, for example, and they are a feature of many prog and neo-prog bands.

My favorite part so far is when he is singing about there being a hole in there somewhere and he's acting out looking for the hole. Brilly brill.

what a voice this guy had. I remember roller skating to this song in the eighties. I don't think I was dork technically but now that I think about it, it's a tough call. But this music was classic and we knew it back then. What a great decade for music.

Mistakes make rock live shows man! Fucking amazing song.
akaguidotube 2 years ago 3
I know that. Genesis were allowed to have bad shows and that's rock and roll. Only KISS and Genesis filmed shows where they left mistakes in (many bands doctor from other shows). I've heard about eight versions of Abacab in its live form (TSL vid and album and Frankfurt from '81, Marquee '82, Philly '83 (which I posted, great version), Birmingham '84 (another great version), NYC '86 (I have up and another kick ass version) and of course Wembley '87 (arguably best live version to many fans)).
floydgenesisnut 2 years ago 2
A buddy of mine works at Atlantic studios in LA and he was the head engineer on the KISS live album from the late eighties and he said they went in and recorded over almost all their parts on that "live" album. Pretty much all artists do it. It is common practice.
committeetba 2 years ago
The recordings on KISSOLOGY DVDs all had zero fixings (no overdubs) as was the Three Sides Live VHS. Since the '80s, technology's improved where now Pro-Tools and so forth can either electronically fix a bad note in a performance or they can copy and paste solos from a different show on to performance of choice for a live album/DVD so going back in to re-record is unnecessary (when Pink Floyd made PULSE, they recorded 20 shows and if a bad note, they'd go to another show for a solo they liked).
floydgenesisnut 2 years ago 2
I wouldnt even COMPARE Kiss w/ Genesis--to me that's an obscene joke--Kiss was fun, I'll admit (and being from NYC myself I'm loyal to them) but NO WAY could they even kiss the feet (no pun intended)of a classically brilliant band as Genesis who are in Tull and Yes's league. Let's face it, with all their bravura, Paul Stanley could only play three freakin' chords total. No offence.
GUIDOBRAT 2 years ago
Comparing Kiss and Genesis is like comparing a Cadillac and a Boeing. WTF's the point.
Love the keyboarding at 5:51 by the way.
Cherimoya9 2 years ago
ya think? it wasnt MOI who MADE the comparison--I read it in here earlier..
anyway, yeah Gen had kick-ass keyboarding--thx to Banks
this is such a great song--ABACAB !!! (collins shouldnt have went off to do his wussy-ass solo stuff--he was a GOD in Genesis (almost as great as Gabriel..but not quite)
GUIDOBRAT 2 years ago
Phil was a workaholic and music was his main hobby whereas Mike Rutherford had polo and Tony Banks gardening so Phil was guest appearing, producing, making solo albums and Genesis albums and so forth in the 1980s like no tomorrow. What stopped him was when he got a bad ear infection in 2002 and lost a bulk of hearing in left ear. I compare Phil to David Gilmour of Pink Floyd as both men helped make respective bands who they are now.
floydgenesisnut 2 years ago
Personally, I still prefer the OLD Floyd (the early incarnation when Syd Barrett held the proverbial "reigns"(although Gilmour is a transcendant musician, no argument from me)--I feel same way about Genesis (first stage) when Gabriel's flair for theatrics made the band more colorful and subliminal, IMHO
GUIDOBRAT 2 years ago
I'm always reminded of another band--w/ nothing in common w/ P. Floyd, but went through a similar re-birth when major personnel changes took place: The Doobie Brothers. When Pat Simmons and Tom Johnston left (taking their rock and country-fied sensibilities w/ them), that band was reborn into the jazz/rock fusion great it became w/ the advent of Michael McDonald
GUIDOBRAT 2 years ago
Yeah, Phil doing his solo stuff was like Sting leaving the Police to do his "artsy", fluffy solo stuff. Not sure why successful musicians do that sometimes, but it really f-cks with the fans, who rarely migrate over to the new genre.
Anyway, it was good to see both bands a couple years back.
Cherimoya9 2 years ago
well, I never "migrated" for any other band (*except for the Beatles, of course--needed all their solo stuff as well..)
GUIDOBRAT 2 years ago

GUIDOBRAT 2 years ago
as for Kansas--they thrived for a period w/ Leftoverture--but as for Styx..what can I say..I had a brief teenage flirtation w/the Chicago-based band in the late 70's, but later when they put out stuff like the abysmal Mr.
