Unlike ignorant popular belief, I would rather build my promotion around Randy Orton over John Cena. Orton is the closest thing this era has to Stone Cold or The Rock. John Cena, I look at him and I see mid-carder written all over him.

Even though I think he is a nicer wrestler than both of them, he simply doesn't have the mic skills to compete with them. Don't get me wrong, his gimmick is one of the best in this era, and he is a bonafide superstar, but Cena is still the better choice for good business. Not necessarily good wrestling mind you, but for good business he is the right choice.

In other words, I think your point is a mute one because if we were still under attitude era rules we would be seeing a different Cena.

Which means, 2006 to 2007, he was already the lame Superman character. The only difference was, he could still curse. Yeah he probably would be edgy during the Attitude Era but I don't think it would last and the Viper Randy Orton could talk more on the mic and not be held back by a PG rule..
Cena didn't change his gimmick in 2006, WWE did. My speculation: I think circumstances were changed in 2006 because of Angle leaving in that year. WWE needed a true face to the company and were desperate to make a change to an already popular character and Cena stepped up and accepted. The gimmick was huge with the kids and clearly stuck. The rest is history. With the attitude era, the WWE wouldn't have needed a face as badly and Cena could have stuck with his true gimmick that made him popular.
@bigbaltimore08 Very insightful. No wonder I see similarities between a face Kurt Angle and John Cena. Angle also has those dog tags and shows lots of sportsmanship yet fans love him more than Cena. I guess it's not just his wrestling ability but also the intensity he has on the mic and he's all business unlike Cena who takes time to crack corny jokes. Kurt Angle caters to everyone while John Cena caters to kiddies.

Unlike ignorant popular belief, I would rather build my promotion around Randy Orton over John Cena. Orton is the closest thing this era has to Stone Cold or The Rock. John Cena, I look at him and I see mid-carder written all over him.

@JMBitchboy No. Randy Orton is no where close to Stone Cold or The Rock in terms of marketability. Even though I think he is a nicer wrestler than both of them, he simply doesn't have the mic skills to compete with them. Don't get me wrong, his gimmick is one of the best in this era, and he is a bonafide superstar, but Cena is still the better choice for good business. Not necessarily good wrestling mind you, but for good business he is the right choice.

@bigbaltimore08 I get your point about Cena's marketability. It's because WWE's target audience is little children which is also their main demographic. Cena's character definitely stands for everything PG and everything we adults find lame, kids find cool. It's the sad reality but don't you think Orton would be more marketable than Cena if they were the two biggest stars in the Attitude Era provided Cena wasn't doing the cool rapper gimmick?

That's exactly it. People want to blame Cena for the PG era, but I really think the PG era hurt Cena more than anyone. U know u were at least kinda down with Cena when he was battle opponents and doing his "5 second poses." He can't do any of that stuff any more because the PG stipulation killed his thug character (or at least everything that made it cool imo). In other words, I think your point is a mute one because if we were still under attitude era rules we would be seeing a different Cena.

Which means, 2006 to 2007, he was already the lame Superman character. The only difference was, he could still curse. Yeah he probably would be edgy during the Attitude Era but I don't think it would last and the Viper Randy Orton could talk more on the mic and not be held back by a PG rule..

Cena didn't change his gimmick in 2006, WWE did. My speculation: I think circumstances were changed in 2006 because of Angle leaving in that year. WWE needed a true face to the company and were desperate to make a change to an already popular character and Cena stepped up and accepted. The gimmick was huge with the kids and clearly stuck. The rest is history. With the attitude era, the WWE wouldn't have needed a face as badly and Cena could have stuck with his true gimmick that made him popular.

@bigbaltimore08 Very insightful. No wonder I see similarities between a face Kurt Angle and John Cena. Angle also has those dog tags and shows lots of sportsmanship yet fans love him more than Cena. I guess it's not just his wrestling ability but also the intensity he has on the mic and he's all business unlike Cena who takes time to crack corny jokes. Kurt Angle caters to everyone while John Cena caters to kiddies.

Cena got big fast and early, then when Raw starting going down hill late '06, and then eventually hit the PG wall people wanted something to cry about, and that something was Cena. People get anal about Cena in an instant and it's so annoying. People don't recall '02 when he was coming around, he was big in no time, and I don't care what people say, if anything everyone was a Cena fan at one point.

I usually just ignore them, but sometimes they say things that are just so stupid and mean-hearted that I have to call them out on it. At the end of the day though, all those people need Cena in the WWE, because if he were to take a leave of absence, they would have nothing to complain about anymore and that's all they really want to do.
