finland didn't have better soldiers than russia. finns mostly used to fight in a defensive stance in bunkers/trenches with machine guns which made it more easy to handle large russian soldier mass. winter war could be more like longer version of a normandy siege
@Hyyra THey did have the better ones. Their preparation and mentality was far more superior. The soviets soldiers had no reason of their own to invade finland, so their morale wasn't that high.

2 is true many Red Army commanders did not take the finnish siriusly and the Army pay a higth prise for it. But the finnish new that the russians were comming moths before the attack. and they had ok equipment not good but ok by the wars end in 1940

It's sad, but russians attacked finnish villages and killed completely innocent civilians (mostly childs and women). Their only goal was to slaughter civilians. @goldbullet50 well i slept 4 weeks in tent in my army time on outside was allways -20...40c and one time we skii all night and slept 2h tempeture vere -28 to -42 in our sleepingbacks inte snow foxhole and then skii back to base and we are engineers not any elit units so we young Finns still kick ass!

I am a strong supporter of Soviet Union, but I admire the Finns during WW2. Even though Stalin was being belligerent and tried to strong arm Finland, they persisted. When the tide turned as Germany invaded USSR, the Finns refused to bombard Leningrad due to the high concentration of civillians. This act shows the ability of man to forgive, and the Finns showed their true honor few other nations of the time posessed. Too bad we couldnt be friends...then no winter war
@Redhammer627 Mannerheim left Leningrad (or Pietari/Petrograd/St Petersburg as the city was still called by many in Finland) untouched for many reasons, one of most important ones for him being the fact that he had lived there and that he loved the city and didn't want to order Finnish soldiers to die so that it could be destroyed. I have yet to see St Petersburg myself, maybe one day I will see the city of Peter the Great that was built on Finnish soil conquered from Sweden.

finland didn't have better soldiers than russia. finns mostly used to fight in a defensive stance in bunkers/trenches with machine guns which made it more easy to handle large russian soldier mass. winter war could be more like longer version of a normandy siege

1. Because Stalin liquidated all the high classed officers, the soldiers didn't get the best possible training.
2. They thought Finland is an easy place to conquer, and didn't take it seriously that Finns with their bad equipment could stand a chance.
3. The soldiers were from Ukraine and other southern parts of USSR, so they weren't used to -40c temperatures and Finnish forest.
But we didn't have enough manpower and equipment so we lost :(

My suggestion for the"peace treaty".
- The Finns were Finns, and fought valiantly and well
- Soviets didn't get to Helsinki in a fortnight as boasted.
- Price for them had been too high (200 000+ dead).
- Fear of war with the west (French were already on the way)
- "Treaty" was obtained under duresses; i.e. sign or else.
On the last point, the "treaty" NEVER was and NEVER will be valid. Hence, Russians, return the occupied lands, pay Finns their costs of war, and return money paid to you.

Puola hävisi sen geologisesti huonon sijainnin ja armeijan varustamattomuuden takia, kun taas Suomi taisteli 15 viikkoa ja menetti 10-13% maa-alueistaan ja 25000+ miestä ja sai torjuntavoiton sen sisun ja geologisesti vituttavan mutta hyvän sijainnin takia. It's sad, but russians attacked finnish villages and killed completely innocent civilians (mostly childs and women). Their only goal was to slaughter civilians. @lintu25 Ihan tiedokseks sieltä kyllä tarjottiin apua, mutta Suomi kieltäytyi koska ajateltiin että apu tulisi liian myöhään ja Suomi koitti pysyä niin puolueettomana kuin pystyi. Myös Ruotsi pisti vähän kapuloja rattaisiin kun ei halunnut päästää apu joukkojen tulla suomeen ruotsin kautta, kun halusi pysyä puolueettomana valtiona.
Turha asiasta on Ruotsalaisille alkaa ryppyilemään, sota tuli ja meni. Eikä Suomikaan mikään pyhä maa ole, annettiin natsien mennä täältä Norjaan.

Rehellisesti voi sanoa, että Puola taisteli koko sodan ajan niin RAF:n riveissä, kuin jalkaväessä. Monte Cassinon taistelussa puolalaiset näyttivät maailmalle, että periksi ei anneta. Kaikki nämä uhraukset sen eteen, että sodan loputtua liittouttuneet pettivät Puolan (kuten pettivät sodan alkumetreillä). Meillä kävi sentään tuuri.

@lintu25 No tuohon kysymykseen en tiedä ihan varmaa vastausta, mutta veikkaisin, että kun Neuvostoliitto ja Saksa hyökkäsivät molemmat Puolaan, niin Puola tarvitsi enemmän tukea ja todennäköisesti ne halusivat voittaa Saksan nopeasti, ennenkuin se hyökkäisi jompaankumpaan maahan

I am a strong supporter of Soviet Union, but I admire the Finns during WW2. Even though Stalin was being belligerent and tried to strong arm Finland, they persisted. When the tide turned as Germany invaded USSR, the Finns refused to bombard Leningrad due to the high concentration of civillians. This act shows the ability of man to forgive, and the Finns showed their true honor few other nations of the time posessed. Too bad we couldnt be friends...then no winter war

@Redhammer627 Mannerheim left Leningrad (or Pietari/Petrograd/St Petersburg as the city was still called by many in Finland) untouched for many reasons, one of most important ones for him being the fact that he had lived there and that he loved the city and didn't want to order Finnish soldiers to die so that it could be destroyed. I have yet to see St Petersburg myself, maybe one day I will see the city of Peter the Great that was built on Finnish soil conquered from Sweden.
