A growing feeling of sadness and regret having missed the chance to live in a period when such talented and passionate artists existed. Maybe Keith Jarret is a good pianist, but this Lady..I love her!!!!!!
@nastyblkman1 "Everyone knows my all-time favorite is Art Tatum. I listened a lot to Earl Hines at the Grand Terrace. Hines was a creative artist from the very start. I also liked Nat King Cole because he copied Earl."
DD graduated from DuSable High School in Chicago and I remember her coming to the school when I attended. Easily one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time.
Like Oscar Peterson, Dorothy Donegan was an Art Tatum protege ( "birds of a feather..."). Fittingly, Peterson and Donegan were the two greatest pianist in jazz since their common mentor. Some say Donegan even surpassed Tatum in skill. True or not, only with regard to her (maybe Peterson) could such a claim be made and not be laughed at. Like Tatum, she could just as well have been a classical pianist of the highest order. What's really remarkable is how this brilliant artist remains so obscure.
@ltravail I found Dorothy Donegan because of a comment you left on an Art Tatum video. Thanks for mentioning her, because she shouldn't be hidden from us amongst all the great pianists.
Dorothy was my dear friend. I miss her so much. I sang with her at the Playboy Jazz Festival. I did God Bless the Child. IF anyone has a copy of that performance, please post it. I would love to see it and remember the great times we spent together. She was not only according to former President Bill Clinton and Leanord Feathers the jazz pianist of the 20th Century. She a was truly the best. We still love you Dorothy.
I saw her 3 times in Los Angeles in the 90s. In cabaret venues & she would move thru the audience & chat with people between numbers. Incredible pianist & ability....I asked her if I could "touch" her hands & she agreed....It didnt help me!
Just saw the Clintons in new Stones Light movie, heard Ms. Donegan 1st time on radio, googled her, and there the Clintons were again..what serendipity and spirit in great music. I love the way music connects and brings out the greatest in all of us. That's all that needs to be said, except, Thank you God, for the whole big, beautiful deal.
I had the honor of playing guitar with her when she was given an honorary doctorate from University of Md Eastern Shore. I was in total Aw when she played Misty!!!!
I have never made a face of shock before until I heard her play!!!
Im glad I was in her presence and able to play with her!!
yawn, I'd love to talk to you... I'm a pianist who lived down the street from her and got to talk to her often. I'd love to talk to to others who knew her, and would love to find her son Donovan....
there is something special about this woman

I thought Art Tatum was the greatest jazz piano player but she gives him a run for the money.

I saw her perform in Philadelphia & was completely amazed by her playing! She is probably one of the most underated jazz pianists and least known.
