@str8organic38mm Depends on the country; it's illegal to own barn owls in the United States due to the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918, but countries like Japan and the UK allow people to raise domesticated owls. Leoram1991's from the UK.
People the leather straps around its feet are for falconry, they are not cruel, and they are akin to wearing socks. If the owl wanted to leave he/she would. If you see any bird of prey with leather straps on its feet you can be pretty sure that it is owned by a trained professional who probably treats their bird better than most people treat their children.
I have a question, aren't owls nocturnal? Or is that simply a habit brought on by needing to hunt at night? If they are fed are they more active during the day?
@Marny5580 they arent ropes theyre leather straps used for birds of prey (falconry). im not actually sure what they mainly do but i thing theyre sort of like a collar for birds and you can strap a rope in it around something if you want it to stay in the same spot.
But when an owlet has imprinted on a HUMAN as a parent then the stakes are changed. If the owlet is cared for in the same manor as the wild mother or father would with little to NO CONTACT then it might be able to be released to the wild again for it will be conditioned and raised for it. But in other instances like here the owl is very well cared for but cannot be returned or released for it would not know how to survive. Thus the imprint has domesticated it.
I have noticed a lot asking what is imprinting? I can answer that for you. Like most animals when they are born or hatched as is the case here they will IMPRINT on the first thing they see(meaning mother and father owls that is LOL). Then and there they will look to them as their parents. With owls it is within the first 4 weeks. After that it takes much more time for the Owlet to recognize or trust for its instincts kick in. 5 to 6 weeks later they are pretty well mobile but still need care.
@leoram1991 LOL I can see its a garden, what I meant was where was this taken. US, UK,other country? Very nice an peaceful though. You take very good care of it and the Owl.What is his name an how old is he?
@jaidenm9 There are two different types of license's you need to have before you can house one. One is a Falconry license, the other is a Rescue and rehabilitation license. The falconry license you have to take classes as well as have someone SPONSOR you to get Government approval. Not easy to say the least. Apprenticeship takes two years The other you need to have veterinarian medical training and Knowledge of Avian anatomy to be approved for that work. Again not easy. Hope I helped
don't listen to the morons. yes, animals belong in the wild but its like plonking a ten year old kid in a forest and yelling, "BE FREE MY PRETTY!" The kid would last like a week.
@badgerstep given as much, animals also come with base instincts, where as children need nurturing. Domesticated animals often lose their wild sides after years of captivity and breeding, but even so, look at stray dogs and cats, they can survive on their own and roam wild in some remote areas
I love birds, ever since my wife saved an injured crow fledgling and we got him healthy again. He was so sociable and smart. He hada name and everything.
@SchoonerandJimbo For a start he's not a wild animal, hes a captive bred owl. Second of all he isnt actually aware that he is an owl because he's an imprint. Thirdly he's unlikely to come into breeding condition but if he does we will probably give him the oppertunity to breed. Forthly he isnt chained down, he's free in this video. And he has the oppertunity to fly away everyday when he flys free.
@leoram1991 .....WTF....sorry....Second of all he isnt actually aware that he is an owl because he's an imprint.???? PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME :) how does an owl not know its an owl?
@leoram1991 do you have videos of the owl "flying away when he flies free"? so he comes back after flying away free?.. the tie on his ankle does seem to keep him there..it's upsetting that's all...nothing personal..at least he's safe..some get hit by cars..i live in the mountains..tried to rescue one that got hit, not killed..she'he was hopping around..i came prepared to trap him 4 safety but got away..i'm most happy hearing them hoot up on the pine where they live above my house...
@SchoonerandJimbo you sir....are a complete and utter moron. yes lets let all the animals raised in captivity go! so they can all die! yes thats brilliant!.....you are one stupid jackass
@SchoonerandJimbo It's not chained down so it could leave if it wished, also this bird is obviously an imprint therefore thinks of the owners as it's parents and "family" -_-

@WillyV089 at this point alfie wasnt an adult yet so he couldnt fly but it takes a while for them to learn not to fly away so you use a thing called a Lure which is like a long thin piece of string that ties the bird to your glove so they cant fly away but most dont try to you tempt them with food making sure they are the right weight etc so they ll come to you and eventually you can fly them free
@leoram1991 I live in Scotland! My favourite animal is a Barn Owl. I think that they are the most beautiful animal in the world. I would love to have one as a pet when I get older, but I am too afraid I will loose him/her. Is training difficult?

Isn't the owl suppose to be sleeping at this time. It's not a bird and I wonder how many times did the rope yank him from running away. Sick spoil selfish people.
@MrJad1114 ok for 1 , hes been hand raised so owls in captitvity are often up in the day cause thats when there handled, 2 an owl IS a bird (what are you talking about?) they are a bird of prey and 3 you can see in this video that he is not attached to anything are you blind?
@MrJad1114 ..... and 4 when they are tied up they are not in distress, we make sure all our animals are happy and secure , if we let them go free they could fly away they wouldnt survive in the wild they would die because they were orginally hatched in captitvity , alfie (barn owl in this video) is flowen. @MrJad1114 so you look at the negative aspects and fail to or purposely blind urself against the positives ?!?! Lets see how u train owls - are u such a pessimistic fool that u can't see that the owl CAN fly atleast short distances and its not chained ? YOU r spoiled idiot
@nan062 I have to agree. A lot of people who want wild creatures as pets aren't too bright. Just look at all the people who get mauled by lions and that chimp that ripped the woman's face off. @welshfluteplayer no we dont, at the point in which this was filmed he was too young to fly but now hes trained to fly to your fist and then tied up when hes not flying;
@elmetalico99 This is Amazinbean2 (leorams sis and my owl). Owls eyes are fixed in their head so the cant move their eyes like we can so have to move their whole head instead. And the circular motion is him judging distances by checking from diffrent directions.
@viirruuss i dont know youd have to ask my sister shes the one that flys him hes her bird really shes amazinbean2 on youtube , aw cute name happy, we have a european eagle owl named Columbis lol i love that name haha
Gorgeous bird my friend! looks like your taking care of him/her very well. beautiful feathers and happily hopping about! well done! I'm rather jealous due to my state laws about raising owls:( all the more reason to move to somewhere better!!

Your own is BEAUTIFUL! And he looks happy..it's nice to see that he's free in the yard and he moves around freely. I hate to see birds caged up.

@elmetalico99: although he could be judging disstance i think he is also trying to position his head so that he can hear better

why is he doing that with his head?
elmetalico99 1 year ago
@elmetalico99 This is Amazinbean2 (leorams sis and my owl). Owls eyes are fixed in their head so the cant move their eyes like we can so have to move their whole head instead. And the circular motion is him judging distances by checking from diffrent directions.

@leoram1991 Funfact, owls have their pinna around their eyes, so he is also listening to things by looking at them.
