On day in the early 60's my father brought home a Paul Robeson album. He warned me that it may not be to my taste - he was wrong. What an amazing voice and, as I began to learn, a facinating person. While I did not agree with all his views, he had the courage of his convictions.
As many said as they came here during the Viet Nam era - "I need to get out of the 'Land of the Free' to a 'Free Land'.
Honestly, I would not have thought an African American could do justice to such a traditional Scottish song, but this version has stopped me in my tracks. I thought my heart had stopped beating. What an amazing talent.
Paul Robeson was certainly a most admirable, intelligent, human, talented and compassionate man. He stood up to the fascists in Spain ("Pablito) during the Spanish civil war, supported his country and the allies during the second world war and for civil rights throughout his entire life. To call him a "Commie" is simply nonsense - he was the best singer in the world and one of the bravest man of modern times - long live your memory and your legacy Paul. The McCarthy creeps lost!
@Peebee48 Thanks for saying nice things about Paul.He was a very dear man.I met him on the plane to Moscow when i was 13, he was on his way to a health sanitarium as he was not very well.I spoke to him and he signed my autograph book which i still have to this day 50 yrs later.A very humble kind man.
When I was a little boy my Scottish father used to sing 'Eriskay Love Lilt / Bheir Me O' to me to send me to sleep, it's deeply ingrained in my memory.
An engineer, but nevertheless he had a good tenor voice and occasionally he'd win eisteddfods.
My father admired Paul Robeson greatly, and as a kid, I'd listen to him play 78 recordings of Robeson on a wind-up phonograph and he'd often sing along with it.
He died aged 89 but had he lived he'd be exactly 100 years old today.
@Baskerville22 I don't agree - I think he saw the equality of people in the Soviet Union, and coming from such inequality and persecution he saw what he wanted for himself - equality and acceptance.
I've loved Paul Robeson, and this song in particular, for most of my rather long life, but I've never heard a recording so clear and pure. Thank you so much.
Thank you so much for posting this. I reference it in a story I'm writing and sharing on the net, and it's wonderful to be able to point my readers to this video so they'll be able to listen to the song.
Jesus, that's one low key.

Absolutely beautiful and so clear. I love Paul Robeson's singing. It seems to come from his heart and is very emotional for me.

He had a great voice and many have forgotten he was an activist and I was one too for a lesser time than him - Max Rafael Waller

Great singer. What a pity he was such a fool politically - being an admirer of Stalin & the Soviet Union.

Re "equality of people in the Soviet Union".
You mean the 'equality' of the slave camp and the grave ?
