The wire is actually a rigid beam with a small tab on the end. It can be adjusted to control the pitch of the boat (along with the angles of attack on the rudder and daggerboard foils, which can also be adjusted by twisting the tiller extension.)
Is that wirethingy that hangs down the front of them a sensor that talks to the foil? That's the only reason I can think that they are there. It's like, telling the foil how close the body is to the water. But I might be wrong, which is why I'm asking. Oh, and those are the coolest sailboats I've ever seen.
@wordreet The class is called the international moth, bladerider is a type of moth (the class only has restrictions, not one design rules) :) I tried one out today, not much wind though... :/
Im not sure, but it may be because the foils create vertixal lift, which can be turned into horizontal lift to get some VMG upwind maby? also, the sails remind me of windsurfers, you know how they tip the sail to windward when trying to plain? its oviously fast :p
@willcobbsail uh huh. it also helps them foil higher. the lateral force of the sails and the sailors weight effectively makes the foils work harder giving them more lift as well as helping them crab to windward
yer i think it is more than that. Luckily ive had the joy of racing againist one and trying one out. they are brilliant and it is eather that or a 49er!!!!!
far out i love these

Insane. The powerboat wash didn't seem to bother it much either.

'or these videos are in marvelously steady breezes'
all you have to do is play the gusts and keep up on the foils through lulls. Much easier to say than do.

Sharp sailing!

upwind performance is astonishing
I guess it's basically two keel boards
and the foils might tend to act like a winged keel against gusts
either that or these videos are in marvelously steady breezes (no chop suggests no more than a light breeze)
Imagine this in an 18 foot skiff!
crowdedHereEh 3 years ago
No need to imagine. There is a video of it on youtube.
Leaning the boat to windward upwind will cause the foils to push the boat laterally upwind as you sail. Its absurd but awesome.

Its Lake garda thts why there isnt any chop and it's normaly a steady 25 knots in the afternoon there...
