@haildaking, I have found the only way is to try them out. Play with someone who will let you proxy out different wargear and go from there. I have three different captains I'll use depending on what army I'm playing against. Hope this helps.
hey jawa, ive started a blood angels army, and im trying so hard to apply your wet blending technique, and i seem to mostly just end up with a hard line that fades into a smudge....what could be some things to keep an eye on to ensure that my blending is smooth? also the streak of the highlight i apply doesnt fade gradually into the darker colour, like yours seems to....it pretty much thins out from where i did the highlight and leaves a faint but evident smudge or smear....its hard to explain
Hey. I play blood angels too. But my only hq is the captain from black reach. I want to buy a new one but I can't decide which one. I was thinking Dante with his deep strike no scatter perk. I just can't decide. I have a 10 man assault squad, death company w/ jump packs, Baal pretedor, and a 10 man tac, and terminators. What do you suggest?
Really helpful stuff you got here ! I read a guide "How to paint citadel miniatures" about blending but this demonstrated the whole process better than 1000 words.
Nice tutorial very helpful what do you do when you can't blend the paint in to the darker area eg a cloak fold were it would be difficult to pull the paint down in to the shadow color ?

I dunno much about painting models but it seems ull be looking at this models from top view, isnt it supposedly the top would have lighter color then the bottom?
another tip jawaballs is to use baal red to blend the paints together then after highlighting. its a very good way to get some deep red colours and it slightly reddens up the orange,
@Cliffjumper24 You're probably right if I was Rembrandt painting a portrait. But I will point out that the use of orange is not my invention. It is a tried and true method for painting Blood Angels suggested by Games Workshop, 'Eavy Metal professionals, and Golden Daemon winners. But what you suggest sounds interesting. I would love to see you demonstrate it! Make a video showing what you mean and I will attach it to this one.
@jawaballs my personal preference with blood angels is the orange red model. you dont need to paint a mini any certain way. i think the mini looks a little dull with just red and white. i think the model looks much more out there with the orange
@Cliffjumper24 Your right about red but for some reason GW tend to go for Orange to highlight red and as this was for a Golden Demon you have to sort of cater towards what the judges want I guess
@Cliffjumper24 Your page link seems to be broke. How bout you do a feature post on my blog? I'm always looking for good content. The only problem I had with your comment was that the vast majority of my videos are aimed at the guy who "cant paint to save his life" in an attempt to help those guys create something they can be proud of. So I render down what I say and do so that people can understand and more importantly, accomplish it. Know what I mean? Let me know if you want a feature. :)
Hi, thx for posting this video. Ok, so lets say that I've mastered wet-blending for two dimensions (not true, but working on it.... :)), i.e. going from dark to light in one along one line... how would i apply that to three dimensions... i.e. lets say a big bulging bicep... all around the base of the bicep, you want it to be shadowed, but at the top you want it to be light, and the highlight follows a circular path (around the bicep) as opposed to a straight line...
What brush are you using here, I made the mistake of getting three cheap two not cheap and good and one came in a paint set also thanks for the guide on the highlights for blood angels, my chapter is half red so thanks again.
I have tried this at home but unfortunately ,when I try to blend the second color in, the color begins to get weaker and weaker and distributes all over the place, I'm moving my brush... Is my brush too wet/dry? or what could be the matter?
The colors i used were: Ultramarines blue(basic colour) and 50:50 space wolves grey and u.m. blue(to blend)
@UbarL33TDo0d you do want the color to dissepate as you pull it further from the base of the color. thats what makes the two colors flow together. if you mean the base (where you pistr put the blending color down) dissepates, then that means the paint is too watery.
@clayisajedi444 Blood angels, from 90's to the present, they NEVER were to orange colours, they are Red, and if people paint them to orange's its because GW painters did it.
@Ahivalaostia88 That's what I meant... we're not talking about fluff here. If GW painted them that way, then that would be the "canon" way to do it at that time.
Well the expert says it so it will be true then ;) bye the way can you make a tutorial on tanks and bases because your can explain very good , have a good camera and your intro just kicks so much ass xD no realy it does :P
First: it's so little paint that you get into your system
Second : it's pretty much water based, and water isn't bad for you ( accept oil based paint those are pretty bad for you IF you suck your brush for let's say 3-4 years) so........
Citadel paint is tasty, hmm! :P Spit really does work, lol, but don't put your brush in your mouth if you've been using varnish... It's not quite as tasty as paint ;-)
im pretty curious about the painting before the blending, did you paint it from dark to light to the middle or from up to down? (this quesion isnt that clear, but i hop eu can make something out of it and awnser it :P)
ouch, I think someone needs some aloe vera for that BURN! great videos, good to see some videos of painting; sometimes the techniques for painting can be pretty vague. thanks for the vids bro; keep up the good work!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
it looks pretty bad from my point of view, which probably is the same point of view as everyone else, how long have you been painting? It might actually be the camera quality but unless you step up your game big time there wont be any Golden Demon awards for you in a the near future. But the again, I might have said to much before seeing your models in real life.
Well some one is an art critic! This video successfully demonstrates a basic technique that a lot of people are thankful to have seen. I don't see any thing bad about that. The one thing that you are right about is that this model was not GD quality. At the time, I had been painting for about a year, and was obviously ahead of myself. But check out my video labeled "Golden Daemon Finalist, from start to finish". Or something like that. My first entry into Golden Daemons made it to top 5. :)
hahah, well well well, someone is an art critic! That kinda made me lol :) Oh, very nice, gonna check it out. doing a kickass terminator assault squad right now myself, but the amount of time it takes to finish one model kind of pisses me of, then again, I have anger management issues.
wut should i blend with? i do my own color scheme. i use snot green as a base, then kinda drybrush scorpian green over that. and i do regal blue followed by ultramarines blue for elbow/knee pads etc
i am an ultramarines collector n i need to ask what i would blend with. my base coat is ultramarines blue on black primer with asurman blue wash n ice blue highlight. i was thinkin about enchanted blue. What do you think?
@Trikthechief start with mordian or regal blue then a 1:1 mix of regal blue and ultramarines blue then pure ultramarines blue then finally ice blue i hope that helps
also one thing i like to to is take the verry edge of the red surfaces is to have a mix of mostly sunburst yellow, and blood red and a slight hind of skull white and make an extemly thin highlight on the verry most edges to make it more dynamic.
Go to GW and ask them about the different armies, they'll be able to tell you about how they are to paint and model, what they play like, and give you an idea of the flavour of each army.
Then you decide for yourself what appeals to you personally.
Whatever you do, don't start collecting the wrong army for you based on unqualified opinions you read online.
How do you keep the red from getting streaky? Even on my mechrite red foundation the color seems a bit blotchy. Maybe I should just stick with the white primer. :|
haha yea...actually i got a free ven dreadnought today and im making it blood angels lol....almost done with it ill post it up for u too see when im done. im not the best painter but i think it looks decent
I recall back in the rogue trader era they appeared to be a rather bright orange, as I think they did a lot of wet blending on the 'Eavy Metal miniatures, then in 2nd edition they seemed to be a much straighter red with orange extreme highlights in the product pictures.
I think it was around the release of 3rd edition when GW changed their paint supplier, at which point GW Blood Red took on a slightly orange hue which is where the modern orangey BAs come from.
Two things, make sure you are using a high quality brush like Reaper Kolinsky Sable 10/0. Then if you noticed, after I applied the firey orange and before I blended it up, I put my brush back into my mouth to get more saliva on it. Make sure your brush is a little damp before you do the pulling.
Dude good lick with the golden demon and btw your model looks abaslotly da bomb if you did a whole squad like that I'm sure you'll win love the vids keep up the good work
When I made that video it had been 1 and a half years since I painted my first model and really only about 8 months since I realized I could actually paint.. Just try your best and practice!
First I'd like to say that this is good video, he actually shows the technique rather than describing it.
I'd like state however that what hes doing is a technique called dry blending, which is different than wet blending. The only difference is that hes pulling paint over a dry basecoat rather than mixing the paint on the model (wet blending). You want the consistency of milk when blending. You should use water and a bit of ink (of the same color) as a flow extender.
i want to start collecting warhammer 40k but dont know how to go about with it, like what pack should i start off with that if i stuff up it wont matter thoughts would be helpful and what type of brushes to get
@Beskoeh Becasue the pads stick out from under the big back pack slightly, is what i guess. They catch more light, where as the upper part of the shoulder pad is in closer to the shoulder and under the vent of the back pack.
nope. You could paint the color of black or white straight on the model...but you will save time and money with primer as it blasts full units of your model's base color...black for darker color models...white for lighter colors :D
wanna clone jawaballs? Just get a comision and take his saliva from the shoulder pad and use it to clone him MWAHAHA!!! (yes i am crazy.....in a good way)
saliva lol.. at least you have your "DNA" stored there : )
Amazing stuff~! i bought blood red / blazing orange for my 'brighter' khorne berzerkers. i guess its cos my playing area's lighting is kinda dark.. this'll help me brighten them even more
hey chris for yor tactical blood angel marines did u use ur fiery orange or just blazing orange. coz im not 2 sure, i couldnt find the highlighting vid btw i really like ur techniques really good

@randombloke10 Thats a good one, this vid was made before Baal Red existed. It does help to smooth out blending.
jawaballs 1 year ago
Sorry Jawa, but I really don't like with the way you've used orange to highlight your model.
Red does not turn Orange in the light, it will turn white.
Just look at a red car.
Unlike blues, where you can add white to highlight it, reds would turn pink.
Instead, you need to consider colour theory.
All colours fade to grey.
If you use a neutral grey (white+black), it will change the 'light intensity', not the colour.
Add this to red and you will get a nice desaturated finish that looks real.

Two things, make sure you are using a high quality brush like Reaper Kolinsky Sable 10/0. Then if you noticed, after I applied the firey orange and before I blended it up, I put my brush back into my mouth to get more saliva on it. Make sure your brush is a little damp before you do the pulling.

thank you for the reply will try today
GodzSniPer300 2 years ago
Perhaps a stupid question but why are people using black for the undercoat ?
PanterausfG 2 years ago
Black allows for more realistic darker paint and easier shading.
jawaballs 2 years ago
What I don't understand is why the brightest part is on the bottom, wouldn't it be the top of the shoulder pad?
Lootaful 2 years ago
Done very nice. And what a steady hand, im gonna try and use this whole blend thing on the horns of my bloodletters. cheers :)
thetoxicblack 2 years ago
It should work well for the horns!
jawaballs 2 years ago

how long does it takes to reach the skill you have??? Cuz it's kind of a cool you made
PcazzoB 2 years ago
When I made that video it had been 1 and a half years since I painted my first model and really only about 8 months since I realized I could actually paint.. Just try your best and practice!
jawaballs 2 years ago
First I'd like to say that this is good video, he actually shows the technique rather than describing it.
I'd like state however that what hes doing is a technique called dry blending, which is different than wet blending. The only difference is that hes pulling paint over a dry basecoat rather than mixing the paint on the model (wet blending). You want the consistency of milk when blending. You should use water and a bit of ink (of the same color) as a flow extender.
chesrevea 2 years ago
how much water would you have to put into paint to get a gd blending solution? ? ?
plz reply p.s it is urget so plz plz reply

i want to start collecting warhammer 40k but dont know how to go about with it, like what pack should i start off with that if i stuff up it wont matter thoughts would be helpful and what type of brushes to get
RandomMeat 2 years ago
it depends what kinda things you like.
if you like to ALOT of models start with orcs or tyranids.
if you want to play with some iron skeletons buy necrons.
so it´s all about what you like.
and ´bout brushes i´d say small brushes for detail and bit larger for others (well every one knew that)

RAGNOR94 2 years ago
awesome man, only ione thing. Why do you apply a highlight color on the bottom of the shoulderpad?
Beskoeh 2 years ago 3
@Beskoeh Becasue the pads stick out from under the big back pack slightly, is what i guess. They catch more light, where as the upper part of the shoulder pad is in closer to the shoulder and under the vent of the back pack.

Do painters who use saliva get sick from ingesting paint or something?
BobaTeaSunflower 2 years ago
Not instantly but over time they do. Because of all the stuff they put into the paint (like cobalt and stuff like that.)
Dawn59er 2 years ago
How did you do btw?
KittyHawkUS63 2 years ago
I did not enter this squad. I did enter an honor guard this last spring and was selected as a finalist.
jawaballs 2 years ago
Nice. Congratz.
KittyHawkUS63 2 years ago
try adding sun burst yellow in miniscule amounts for extra highlights works but tiny mounts
ssjgeta 2 years ago
do i need primer im a noob
creepingdeath625 2 years ago
nope. You could paint the color of black or white straight on the model...but you will save time and money with primer as it blasts full units of your model's base color...black for darker color models...white for lighter colors :D
theclash24 2 years ago

I never entered them. That particular set of models, while good, did not come out GD quality. Plus they did not have a GD at the Grand Tournament.
