According to the study conducted by Professor Michel Paques center clinical investigation of the Hospital des Quinze-Vingt (Paris). According to the study, the poppers could alter the structure of the retina, causing loss of visual acuity followed by glare.
Their observations revealed cell damage “photoreceptor” in the retina, cells in the center of the “macula” is an area of the retina that controls vision at its finest. This deterioration is due to the vapors of nitric oxide from poppers.
@erickooy The study shows that the high concentrations of nitric acid prove to have a degree of retinal toxicity.
They speculated that it was because a dramatic concentration of nitric acid, which in turn also cause the release of guanylate cyclase, rather than the sudden changes in ocular perfusion pressure, since photoreceptors are generally resistant to this kind of short-lived changes.
I'd advice to have a glass of water with sodium bicarbonate after using this drug and not use it too often.
@Ebvardh Research on patients have allowed research to note that in case of stopping use of poppers, visual disturbances observed tended to stop. They also note that to eat poppers occasionally or frequently aggravate or reduce the risk of eye disorders. According to researchers speaking combined experience of 14 patients
“The phenomenon is reversible even after several years of poisoning, improvements have been observed after discontinuation of use. Though it may take several months.”
I just figured sodium bicarbonate would be a relatively safe way of neutralizing the exaggerated buildup of nitric acid that you'd get from over doing this drug.
Though for the phosphene, it seems the only cure would be to spent a good few months not using any isopropyl nitrite whatsoever.
Poppers can't cause AIDS. It's an analgesic, vasodilator drug, and therefore can't cause a viral infection, much less one that's only transmitted through fluid interchange such as sex or blood transfusion.
The only reason why you would even think they cause AIDS is because they're popular among the gay community, and even then, no reason to believe it would cause AIDS on itself.
Read AND think. Don't just read and mindlessly repeat retarded lies.
Yikes!!!!! This shit lowers your immune system and has been linked to Kaposis sarcoma, amongst other negative affects! Its your choice people. PLEASE KNOW WHAT YOUR CHOOSING TO CHOOSE!
@cjcarenza Read a little. The reason why it's linked to Kaposi's sarcoma and a "lower immune system" is because it's popular around the gay community where the incidence of HIV positive people is very high.
There's no studies that demonstrate amyl nitrate could cause sarcoma on it's own.
yeah you can try poppers free at the red light districts in amsterdam (the netherlands) or brussels (belgium) where the whores sometimes give their clients a free inhale or you can buy them for like 20 to 30 Euros. effect only last 1 minute and your blood pressure drops and you feel like your heart going very quickly. better is to take viagra or cialis because the effect on your dig is much better and lasts longer. you can find poppers in peep shows, sex shops, brothels, erotic massage shops,...
@achemachew - They do sometimes sell them as such as well as liquid incense or potpourri or 'rush'. Risks not only include death but also sight loss/blindness! Please, everyone, make good, healthy choices in life.
@Jannsmith I've had a bottle of Rush I had for like 3 years. I don't use it, because I no longer like it. Plus it gives me a headache. I stay away from inhalants now!
@achemachew - I'm so glad to that you do stay away from products used for huffing! Nothing good can come from them. The "funny" sensation that one feels from inhalants is the brain damage which cannot be reversed. Please stay well.
@Jannsmith Actually, the "funny" sensation is your blood pressure dropping, because this drug is a vasodilator.
It transforms into nitric oxide inside you and causes the involuntary muscles to relax, which in turn causes your veins to relax and voila, your blood pressure drops.
@Ebvardh - When a person uses any type of inhalant, the oxygen in the blood gets displaced by the gas/vapors. Please, everyone, avoid using poppers or ANY type of inhalant and have a Happy and Healthy New Year!
At a dentist's they actually use the substance which poppers induce inside the body for minor procedures like a dental bridge or wisdom teeth removal.
Yes, you shouldn't use this if you have medical problems like low blood pressure, breathing problems, heart defects, anaemia or glaucoma, or if pregnant.
But what you're all saying about AIDS, sarcomas or, in your case, brain damage(cliche much?) is pure bullshit.
This is a fairly benign sedative, and a fun one at that.
@Ebvardh - I actually have *not* looked at wikipedia for the information but rather a licensed physician that stated so on a news segment. Please don't get a false sense of security when not seeing a lot of information about risks of inhaling chemical vapors. Stay smart, everyone, and make good, HEALTHY choices in life. We only get one brain which controls the entire body.
You owe it to yourself to live it, but the reality is that if you don't inform yourself about what you're doing before you do it, you might make a mistake.
Inversely, by not being informed, you might miss out on many good things simply because you're scared.
Huffing things like gasoline, lacker, glue or paint can indeed cause considerable neurological damage on the long run, but not this.
The health concerns you've listed have no base on reality.
@Ebvardh - The health concerns are put forth by licensed health care professionals. It's *not* just made up by some unknown entity. If I wouldn't tell my kid or nephew to use it, I wouldn't tell anyone that it's okay to play Chemical Russian roulette.
@Jannsmith It's not Russian roulette. It would be if there was uncertainty about the effects of this drug, if maybe it was a "new drug" but it's been around since the 50s and it's been a popular recreational drug since the 70s. Its effects have been tested in humans many times, primarily because dentists use it often for its anesthetic properties.
@Ebvardh - Researchers have referred to inhalant use (of any kind) as "Chemical Russian roulette" since no one knows the effect it will have on the individual. Dentists use nitrous oxide ("laughing gas") for their patients though it's NOT supposed to be for recreational usage.
@Ebvardh - We're unable to post sites on here, but if one goes to yahoo.com and types into search "rush and inhalant re-emerges amoung popular drug among teens", that is one article mentioning blindness or sight loss as a possible side effect of liquid incense or "rush".
@Jannsmith And I'm telling that if you go into google and search for peer reviewed studies on the health effects of this drug, amyl nitrate (or any other drug, really), you'll get objective information about how it ACTUALLY works inside the circulatory system, instead of biased bullshit telling you things that aren't truth.
Long term blindness is not a side-effect of using his drug. You may indeed get tunnel vision for as long as its effects last. Again, it's just your blood pressure dropping.
@Ebvardh - Google and yahoo are virtually the same thing as they're both search engines. I'd posted a way to get to that article. Not to be rude, but it's NOT bs just because it didn't have the information that allowed you to feel comfortable using poppers.
@Jannsmith I've seen the EyeWitness article posted on a bunch of places. It has no quotes to support what it claims is true information. It's not based on medical facts.
In fact, I'll post links to the article here to others can see how it doesn't actually quote anything.
I do indeed, even though it's been years since I used these things, feel very comfortable with them. You know why? Because I actually took the time to read medical journals that describe how it works inside the body.
@Ebvardh - So you're saying that medical journals tell you (the reader) that it's okay to use poppers for REACREATIONAL use, and that it is safe. Which ones would they be?
@Jannsmith Medical journals have no commentary on right or wrong; they simply record observations made by researchers based on their studies.
I'm saying that no study has stated any clear connection between the health issues you or others have listen (brain damage, "dissipating oxygen", long term blindness, HIV, etc) and using poppers, aside from a couple of studies that showed many were HIV positive, which only points out that they're popular among the gay club community.
@Ebvardh - The poppers increases pressure in the eye which may be one reason that sight loss or blindness can occur with use. Inhalants can also damage the optic nerve in the brain which is responsible for vision. With regard to studies, the research doesn't necessarily show every possible side effect, for example, my friend has a brain injury from huffing at the age of 12, now in her 30s. She has a severe grating at the back of her neck when nodding up/down, and no research says so.
@Jannsmith Again, you're talking out of your ass. How can a drug that lowers blood pressure increase pressure in the eye?
Because "erickooy" actually did his homework, I'll bite fucking bullet and admit that there are two reported cases of blindness reported in the last decade, both of which regained sight after discontinuing constant use of the drug.
Unlike you, I actually admit when I'm wrong instead of continuing to talk my ass off without fundament.
@Ebvardh - So you're going to throw someone else's name out there to try to team up? Anyone who thinks that inhaling chemical vapors is safe just because it may be used as a medication is quite delusional.
@Jannsmith Just as delusional as someone who makes up reasons why you should or shouldn't do something based on their fear, rather than actual medical facts.
Or are you saying your claims for saying this drug causes brain damage, "blood oxygen dissipation" or intraretinal pressure are actually based on what you factually know of this drug and not just you guessing what MIGHT be the consequences of using this drug but not knowing for sure?
@Ebvardh - What am I not being honest about? Like I said, I didn't pull the information that I'd posted out of thin air. You can choose to abuse your brain and entire body though I'm just giving a cautionary.
@Jannsmith No, a cautionary is saying "Avoid that road, because there are bumps and holes there and you might have an accident if you're not careful".
You're saying "Don't go down that road, there's dragons and it ends in a slippery road with mines that leads you to a cliff, and you'll surely have an accident as soon as you enter it".
Excuse me if I'm interrupting your noble task of spreading exaggerated misinformation.
And I actually do wish you luck, because you seem to be the kind of person who's to believe whatever propaganda seems appealing at the time such as "eat no carbs/fat at all" or "good cholesterol--bad cholesterol" just because they mention it some article they didn't even bother reading completely.
You believe that in the long run your lazy, extrapolation-prone thought patterns are healthier than informed recreational drug use?
@Ebvardh - I did *not* just make up the poppers ("rush") causing eye pressure. With regard to retina damage that someone else mentioned, we NEED a healthy retina to take in light for vision. Those with macular degeneration actually have damage to the macula which is the center of the retina. No one should mess with their eyes. Why risk it?
@Jannsmith You don't even understand why you're saying it causes retina damage.
It's nitric acid toxicity acting on pre-existing lessons after chronic usage, which was reverted after discontinuation of usage.
It the same as saying that alcohol will KILL your liver and you shouldn't drink when you could very well use a moderate quantity and if you live a regular life style and quit alcohol, you'll get better, the difference being that the problems associated with poppers are rare in comparison.
@Ebvardh - I didn't say that it causes retina damage but was instead repeating what someone else said here. My point was that retina damage is not necessarily less serious than sight loss/blindness. On the note of alcohol use and liver damage, even after stopping drinking, it's not a guarantee that the liver will reverse back to a healthy one. That is kind of a side point though as I'm referring to the dangers of inhalant use.
@Jannsmith Yes, by way of mis reference of an article that's hosted on a webpage that's, at best, sensationalist. Which only half supports what you've said and, by the way, isn't backed up by any scientific resources (has no quotes, at all).
And on the note of use of nitrates, studies show that retinal damage is reverted as us is discontinued.
We're talking about the most dramatic cases here, which are only two of reported blindness.
That's two cases, in the 40plus years this drug's been used.
@Ebvardh - I'm purposely not spending too much time on these posts from now on :) You have your convictions, and that's obvious. I don't tell people something is safe unless I would say that my nephew should do them. Just common sense. Best of luck
@Jannsmith Not your nephew (I find kind of odd that you would consider using your nephew as a bullet catcher for impeding danger, btw) but I would say that maybe it would change your perspective to experience with it.
It only impairs physiological aspects and doesn't affect neurological functions, so you won't turn into a hippie or anything.
I'd check my own health before doing it to avoid complications (as you would with just about anything), but I would actually recommend it to you.
@Ebvardh - Not that I want to keep talking about this, but regarding my relative, I'm *not* using a loved one as a "bullet catcher", lol. My point was that if I wouldn't tell a loved one that it's okay to do a certain behavior, I wouldn't tell a stranger over the net that it's okay. Anyway, take care.
@Jannsmith No, I get that. Indeed drug usage is part of an intrinsically self-destructive kind of behaviors, and it's not positive if you find yourself doing drugs constantly.
I've been "clean" for about a year now, so I know that it's pretty amazing to have a sober mind all the time.
Still, I think it's easier to appreciate that sobriety if you have some intoxication to compare it to, and that certain drugs are... well, pretty damn fun. Particularly, the exotic, not-too-addictive ones.
@Ebvardh - You're clearly wanting to draw me back to the conversation. I'm not interested in mind-altering drugs of any kind. It is very disrespectful of you to tell someone whose trying to caution someone else about the dangers of inhalants (or any drugs) to try them. Hoping that you make good choices in life. Take care of yourself!
@Jannsmith I was referring to the reaction your expressed. You said "It is very disrespectful of you to tell someone whose trying to caution someone else about the dangers of inhalants (or any drugs) to try them"
It's not, it's just something for you to consider. There's nothing inherently disrespectful in my offer, but you felt offended regardless.
My point is that your stance isn't based on information and health, it's based on ego.
You find it comforting to antagonize with drugs, so you do.

You too.

@Jannsmith You can leave the conversation if you want.
Not disrespectful. You just find it so because your ego dislikes me questioning you ultimate decision not to use drugs.
"How dare he offer me drugs?!"
It would be wrong of me to tell you to use them without informing yourself, or to tell you to use stuff like crack claiming it's harmless.
I'm advocating the same as you are, smart decisions.
The difference is that I advocate smart & informed decisions, rather than just shying away from stuff.

@Ebvardh - I didn't tell you that you offered me drugs. Good bye and be well.
