@ducttapecreates I think I played with it a bit, but I don't do much video conferencing so I don't tend to focus on the camera. At this price point, the webcam is usually pretty bad. I'm sure you can find a sample in a review somewhere though...keep in mind that this model is has been replaced by a newer model, so the camera might have changed as well.
@lovdog8 I ordered it from Dell that way. Dell changes colours in different markets of the world all the time - it's a sad reality of the way Dell works.
@JrFilipino I'm saying that one month they'll offer red, then the next month they won't - and it might come back later, or never again. Or they might add colours and remove other colours. It's Dell - they change things all the time. :-)
yeah... you will miss some features in windows 7 starter... and one of those features is changing wallpaper. You can upgrade to windows 7 Ultimate if you want. I did it for my netbook and it worked flawlesly
@VideoDude36 Yes, it has a built-in microphone. As for battery life, I don't recall - I did this video almost a year ago. I'm sure I talk about battery life in the video...
You are reviewing the mini 1012 not the 1018. You should probably correct that. I have been looking for a review for the 1018 and I can only find the 1012.
@holycowitschris Dell makes things so hellish on reviewers. :-( When I reviewed this product, it didn't have a name other than "New Dell Mini". There was no model number associated with it. As I explain in the video description, the 1018 is identical to this one I've reviewed other than the CPU: the 1018 has the Atom N455 rather than the Atom N450. On the other hand, the 1012 has a higher resolution screen (1366 x 768), the Broadcomm chip, etc. Totally different product.
@ThoughtsMedia Thanks for that information, I'm getting a 1018 soon so I was looking up information about it. From what I have read it looks like the 1012 is better but I am not buying it so I have no say. Great review, just need to work on the changing the 8 to a 2 in the title. lol
The new mini 10 only have 2 usb ports and a different tuchpad..? I ordered one, going to upgrade to 2gigs of ram and an SSD disk. Oh and run ubuntu instead of win7. Love the fanless design!
i have this laptop, the full batary life is 8 hours! withc is realy good but it dosetake 8 hours to charge back :( , i have had it for a fue months now, i have fallen i love with it, you cant get me off it..the only problem i have it that you cant change the backgraond but thats as it have windows 7 starter and that dosent let you :(
so all together in my point it is an AMAZING! laptop
@devilishmode My memory is a bit fuzzy, but I don't think it's very easy to upgrade this Dell Mini 10 to 2 GB of RAM...I don't think it's user-accessible, so you'd have to crack open the chassis, etc. Not something I recommend for the average user. It really depends if you're doing heavy multi-tasking and need the extra RAM. Windows 7 likes 2 GB more than 1 GB though, that's for sure. ;-)
What would be a good laptop to get if i'm just looking for somthing nice and doesnt crap out and just for your normal everyday online stuff? and maybe a little gaming possibly? Any suggestions?
@gigi1317girl Get something with a Core i5 CPU at minimum, Core i7 if you can manage it, and 2 GB minimum of RAM. In terms of exactly what to get, I can't tell you - I'd look at Dell or HP notebooks to start, and from there it really depends on your budget.
Can you please upload a video or article about the review of Aspire One Pro 532h. That is Available in Canada and does it really matter to have a netbook with wi-fi 802.11 b/g or 802.11n because I probably read that 802.11n has a larger range than 802.11b/g, can you throw some light on this issue...
@somil1994 No, having 802.11n isn't much of a big issue - it's fine to get it, but it's not worth paying more for. 802.11n actually has worse range than 802.11g; the higher frequency spectrum (5 Ghz) can't cut through walls., etc., as well as 2.4 Ghz can. However, it's much faster. As for that Acer, I have no plans to review that unit.
Does the Dell Mini 1012 with a disk drive where I can put CDs and DVDs? And for that matter does the Dell Mini 1011 have one? If not, is my only option an external drive? I don't have an external disk drive know so if I get the 1012 how will I install any disks? One last thing, can the 1012 handle effects programs like FXHome? Please answer!
@sammmm96 Since it seems like you're going to keep spamming my videos until I answer this question, I'll answer it: no, it does not have a CD/DVD drive. 99% of netbooks do not. This question is asked, and answered, dozens of times in my videos, so I know longer answer it. You'll need to purchase an external CD/DVD drive. I have no idea what FXHome is, so you'll need to do your own research on that. Please don't post the same question over and over on videos, it's irritating.
Does this have a drive where you can insert CDs and DVDs? I know it sounds really stupid but I can't see one, so does it have one? And will I be able to use programs like FXHome on this?
@Lineriderrocks123 but remember fraps messes up the frames per second and when we are talking about netbook cpus and their integrated gpus it will be a less than 10% accurate representation. Where with a normal powered machine the little bit it does mess it up won't be as bad.
So i got mine like 3 days ago.. And the weird thing is, i can change the wallpaper and stuff like that. i swear to god no hacks, no cracks, i turned it on and i could change it inmidiatly
@Fraagzy What's there to reply to? You're asking me to make a decision for you, and I don't do that. Do the research yourself and make up your own mind. :-)
You said to post our comments, so now I do. I wanna get one of tha dell 10s. Which one? This "new" one, tha crappier version-like 3cells, 160GB etc.-or tha "older" guy, with -I think almost same things-? Or do yo have semothing around this price and better? Your tha only who can help tHA best. Thanx.really helpful vid:)
@Ladiesman271blog The old Dell Mini 10 and the new Dell Mini 10 are very similar; the biggest difference is the battery life from that integrated 6-cell battery, and of course the difference in the shape. Buy whichever one fits your budget and needs.
@doozer8688 That's odd - the New Mini 10 has a "big butt" on it to hold the 6-cell battery...they don't have a different body design that's smaller for a 3-cell...unless you look at the original Mini 10.
I've had my Inspiron 9200 for 5 years and it's only just now starting to fail on me even though it's taken a battering, even dropped it down the stairs! :( So I'm definitely getting another Dell and your reviews are great, really helped me decide which one to get. Thanks! :D
great review, been looking for a comprehensive video review on this netbook for ages. already bought mine from amazon! thanks and keep up the amazing videos!
You may not have yet come into contact with this updated version of this netbook but seeing as though i have seen you have had some experience, would you recommend this similar more updated netbook for a student? I am a student who has a toshiba notebook (laptop) at home and i think it is too big and heavy to take to college so i have been thinking about getting something light weight...
@jacksite2007 ...I can use the college computers but they are desktop which i have found to be a lot harder to type on being used to a laptop keyboard for over a year now. I only really want to do work (microsoft office) etc and possibly a few movies seeing as though it is more portable that a laptop....
@jacksite2007 ...Although it is more expensive to somewhere else i have seen. I don't know the canadian currency exchange rate at the moment so i can't work it out at the moment.
Also, where i am looking at getting it from only sell it in black and red. The red looks good but i think it looks slightly girly, what do you think (although i know it is a personal preference).
Great review but you seem to love the 1080p-on-netbook-hype. 1080p on a netbook is a joke. Not that the screen has the wrong aspect ratio it even has a much inferior resolution for a FullHD movie.
And to complete ur special review you do sth that no netbook user ever is supposed to do, rendering a video. That's a bit of a shame.
hi ok so i own this exact item and i was also annoyes that i could not change the wallpaper, so is it bad to do the third party searches? also on the paint application its has an option to set as background but then it doesnt work...??? why did u return your mini. thanks
@sleepyhead1997 I haven't used the third party work-arounds, so I can't say if they're legitimate or not. Your computer, your risk. I returned the mini because other than the longer battery life, it didn't do anything different from my HP Mini 1000 for instance.
@sleepyhead1997 to change the wallpaper you are not violating regulations or sth, you just don't do the windows way. And there are lots of tools to change the wallpaper. Some brands even include a tool to do that on their netbooks
@roy88888888 No, unfortunately I can't, unless Dell Canada decides to send me one - I just ordered and returned the New Dell Mini 10, so I can't do that again... :-)
@roy88888888 No, unfortunately I can't, unless Dell Canada decides to send me one - I just ordered and returned the New Dell Mini 10, so I can't do that again... :-)
thats why i never buy products at launch, it always get cheaper ,and get updates( hardware wise) especially in computers, what would you expect, come on jason. you are to naive
Hey Jason! great reviews! Which one do you like better? The "old" Mini-10...or the "new" one? I have the old one in black and it has a 6-cell battery and I like it better than this one.
i REALLY hate the desing the old dell mini 10 was way better... anyway i'll probably get a netbook because i have a gaming pc and i can't go on the internet while i'm playong so i'll get a new laptop but i want a cheap one so i'm looking for netbooks but i only have 1 litle question... i know the processor is not so fast so here is my question... can you run msn (webcam conversation), itunes and maybe 2 internet pages and a youtube video at the same time without lags ? THX for helping :)
Yes, you can do all those things on a netbook - as long as we're talking about the YouTube video not being in HD quality. Doing them all at the same time might be pushing it - specifically the Webcam process - but it should work.
As you can guess its simply to see if you can play 720p youtube videos on a low powered CPU laptops/ netbooks as playing youtube HD is a MAJOR factor on my mobile computing purchases. :)
You're right, I should have done that test - I didn't because it would have failed. :-) Without a GPU assisting Flash playback, and without Flash 10.1 to use that GPU, the little Atom CPU just can't handle 720p Flash content.
Haha...you posted this comment about two minutes after my video went live, so you couldn't have watched more than 25% of it. Busted. ;-)
As for reviewing the Asus 1201n, I'm not accepting any new products for review for a little while, but when I'm ready to start looking at new netbooks again, I definitely want to check out some Asus and Acer netbooks. No promises, but I'll do what I can.
Liesss I posted it in the middle of the review when you were talking about LOTR and still having 56% battery left :p
I understand reviewing products is time consuming and the editing, I have dell inspiron 1318 and I'm looking for something with more battery life and dual core atom with ion gpu seems like a perfect combination to me.
Anyways thank you for your response I love your videos!
Much to my frustration, I recorded five videos on the same day with the microphone turned up too loud - so all five videos have the same gain problem. I know, it sucks...but I can't bring myself to re-record them. It would be far too difficult. I apologize for the poor audio quality.
u didnt mantion about how is it functioning as a netbook meaning opening like 5-6 tabs on the explorer including maybe a ayoutube tab, facebook tab, email tab, maybe a uni tab (or like an the office website tab and a word and excel open ....(sorry thats usualy what i do with my laptop since im a astudent and i study with music from youtube) could u run this test and say if its not too slow or how does he takes that multi tasking office apps

You may not have yet come into contact with this updated version of this netbook but seeing as though i have seen you have had some experience, would you recommend this similar more updated netbook for a student? I am a student who has a toshiba notebook (laptop) at home and i think it is too big and heavy to take to college so i have been thinking about getting something light weight...
jacksite2007 1 year ago
@jacksite2007 ...I can use the college computers but they are desktop which i have found to be a lot harder to type on being used to a laptop keyboard for over a year now. I only really want to do work (microsoft office) etc and possibly a few movies seeing as though it is more portable that a laptop....
jacksite2007 1 year ago
@jacksite2007 ...Although it is more expensive to somewhere else i have seen. I don't know the canadian currency exchange rate at the moment so i can't work it out at the moment.
Also, where i am looking at getting it from only sell it in black and red. The red looks good but i think it looks slightly girly, what do you think (although i know it is a personal preference).
Thanks

Hi Jason, I wanted to ask you how is the sound on this netbook, and if you figured out where are the speakers.
And, can you make a review of the new hp mini 210???
Thanks a lot

Do you know if there will be a Mini 1012 with a matte finish front bezel?

@krazykul89 I have no idea about future Dell products.

Which would you consider better: a full version of XP with all of it's capabilities or a "stripped out" starter version of windows 7?
A99YearOld 1 year ago
@A99YearOld Windows 7 all the way. It's a modern OS. XP is not.

That's a bit of a shame.

batman arkham asylum works perfectly fine with full hd resolution

hi ok so i own this exact item and i was also annoyes that i could not change the wallpaper, so is it bad to do the third party searches? also on the paint application its has an option to set as background but then it doesnt work...??? why did u return your mini. thanks
sleepyhead1997 1 year ago
@sleepyhead1997 I haven't used the third party work-arounds, so I can't say if they're legitimate or not. Your computer, your risk. I returned the mini because other than the longer battery life, it didn't do anything different from my HP Mini 1000 for instance.
- Jason
ThoughtsMedia 1 year ago
@sleepyhead1997 to change the wallpaper you are not violating regulations or sth, you just don't do the windows way. And there are lots of tools to change the wallpaper. Some brands even include a tool to do that on their netbooks

The battery life on this thing IS impressive!

roy88888888 1 year ago
@roy88888888 No, unfortunately I can't, unless Dell Canada decides to send me one - I just ordered and returned the New Dell Mini 10, so I can't do that again... :-)

Firstly i want to say i LOVE you videos, great information.
Secondly i purchased an hp mini 1000 on your suggestion, and i am very happy with it, so thank you!
thirdly: i am thinking about buying a new netbook, the 9" screen, 16 gb ssd, xp, and no vga has gotten annoying, but its not a big deal.
now on to my question: should i buy the new mini 10, is it worth the money, or should i wait? or should i buy a different netbook?
thanks for all your help!
Carnage338 1 year ago
@Carnage338 I haven't reviewed it yet, but I personally think the new HP Mini 210 is a better choice than the New Mini 10.

Hey Jason! great reviews! Which one do you like better? The "old" Mini-10...or the "new" one? I have the old one in black and it has a 6-cell battery and I like it better than this one.
TheMentalFlakes 2 years ago
Between the two, I prefer the old Dell Mini 10.

i REALLY hate the desing the old dell mini 10 was way better... anyway i'll probably get a netbook because i have a gaming pc and i can't go on the internet while i'm playong so i'll get a new laptop but i want a cheap one so i'm looking for netbooks but i only have 1 litle question... i know the processor is not so fast so here is my question... can you run msn (webcam conversation), itunes and maybe 2 internet pages and a youtube video at the same time without lags ? THX for helping :)
360doublekickflip 2 years ago
Yes, you can do all those things on a netbook - as long as we're talking about the YouTube video not being in HD quality. Doing them all at the same time might be pushing it - specifically the Webcam process - but it should work.

i have a thought...
you should do what i call the youtube test.
As you can guess its simply to see if you can play 720p youtube videos on a low powered CPU laptops/ netbooks as playing youtube HD is a MAJOR factor on my mobile computing purchases. :)
Nice review once again.
thestevedotcom 2 years ago
You're right, I should have done that test - I didn't because it would have failed. :-) Without a GPU assisting Flash playback, and without Flash 10.1 to use that GPU, the little Atom CPU just can't handle 720p Flash content.
- Jason
ThoughtsMedia 2 years ago
@ThoughtsMedia Thanks for the info :)
i think you should still do it tho cuz flash wise i have no clue on what an atom can do :)

nice review sir! could you review Asus 1201n?
imakerandomvideosok 2 years ago
