Is it necessary to take the fish out? And um... in what water do I put the water cleaning solution chemical thing? In the water I'm putting in or the water the fish are already in?
If you have never kept fish or have just bought one recently and you haven't already done so; I would really recommend joining an aquarium fish forum to ask questions and learn more about requirements of fish owning. (it's harder than it looks)
@Bettawonder Probably a because you stuck it in either a contaminated vase, or you didn't condition your tap water or cycle your tank, maybe it was too cold and your fish died of shock. Or maybe your sick was sick before you brought it home. It's hard to say if you don't give more information on your water specs and stuff.
@bobcheese427 I thought it was a pretty vague explanation on how to clean a tank. Newbies watching this video could get all sorts of things wrong. Like I did. It's the fish who suffer.
Better title for this video : "How NOT to clean your aquarium". You shoud use gravel with not so big grains, then you dont have to use gravel cleaner. You shoudn't change the filtermedia, wash it in aquarium water (not tap water). Use living plants, not plastic!
The blue lights in a tropical aquarium looks awful, keep it for saltwater.
i strongly disagree with people like joel just because you have 20 years keeping your tank does not make you a lead athority in this matter it is easy to see that this guy is wrong and as an aspiring biologist i can tell you that bacteria (beneficial)is found in the water and the plants and the filter and upon contact with chlorinated water they all die ...removing 25% of the water does more harm then good every aquarium is different and should be treated as such dont take these literally plz
Wait, all you have to do is SHAKE your siphon to get the vacuum going?! I've been sucking on it, which felt really gay at the time
Especially since the guy who was helping us choose the cleaning materials was gay, and told me and my mom that you have to suck really hard. We laughed.
My name is Michael... And my dick is 2 centimeters long :) and we take our brush and make sure we get those dicks out of my asshole and my name is Michael and we just cleaned my aquarium
You don't take the plants out they hold beneficial bacteria you will start a mini cycle by doing that plus it stresses out your fish! Obviously you don't know about the cycle because In your other vids you say to take it apart and scrub it!
what if you have a tank with live plants? I can't seem to find any info on that. I don't think you can just uproot the plants, clean the substrate and throw them back in without really stressing the plants.
Most of your bacteria are going to grow in the filter ( biomedia) , not the water . substrate and decor only count for a very small amount of the total population unless your still using an undergravel . overcleaning the filter is the simplest way to cause a cycle in an established tank. that's just a fact. I knew better than to clean my tanks this way twenty years ago.
clean those plants every month pssht i just let the water get really low and fill it back up. i still haven't cleaned my tank since 3 months ago. that's why i got a pleco.
Great video. If I may share, make sure your added water is the same temperature as the tank water. And, of course, condition the water before adding it. Cheers!
Yeah, that's a technique I use when starting a new tank. I'll do that for about 6 months. After that time, you can get away with taking out as much gunk in the gravel as you want and not having any spikes in ammonia or nitrite. It takes quite a while for the whole system to allow you to do that.
i have a 40 gallon and i change water about once every couple of months or sometimes couple of weeks depends on my mood. but i never clean my filter or take out plants and my water stays crystal clear.
well i do have 2 filters. on is for 80 gallon and the other one is 30 gallon hang on filter. at first i do clean tank often to cycle it but once it's established, i rarely do water change.
You can get away with larger water changes than that. I've known people that do 50% a week for large tanks. Even more. In my large established tank, I usually do 30% - 40% week. Large water changes actually make a lot of species of fish grow faster.
I thought the bio-filter lived more on surfaces than in the water... if you clean the filter, vac your substrate so aggressively, and clean off all your other porous stuff, you run the risk of an ammonia spike.
I rotate cleaning the stuff, ornaments 1 week, plastic plants the next, filter the next, and always vac the gravel, but not so deep. There are good anaerobic bacteria in there. But I vac/change water weekly, and do 2 gallons out of my six.
Bacteria live not just on the plants. But yes you can remove the plants to be cleaned. Even if those plants were real, yes, they can stay out of the water for a while (more than enough to last your cleaning) 15-25% water change should be done weekly. The tank will last a couple days without a filter (Without fish) Airstone to agitate the water surface. And some fish food for the Bacteria to munch on. change water before you get fish. I personally lightly clean gravel as i do water change weekly
you dont need to take the plants out and you do a 25% WEEKLY water change. Taking the plants out will take out a lot of beneficial bacteria that your fish need to thrive.
i baught new a filter because i baught another filter fron another place that turned out to be faulty.
the water i put in is fresh and the gravel is clean, it has no fish in the tank as of yet.
my concern is waiting 6 days untill the filter i ordered arives will i have have to change the water again because its been sat there for a possable 5 days with no filter?
You don't have to do 25% weekly. I change about 25 - 30% water once every two week. No problems with that. Have done it like that since I first started with aquariums.
Well, it depends on how big your tank is. If it's smaller, like 10 or 20 gallons, you should do a weekly 25% water change, but if it's bigger, like 30 or more gallons, you should do a water change at least every second week.
I do about 30% - 35% a week, sometimes 40% for my heavily stocked aquarium. Absolutely no problems. This keeps down the nitrates and the keeps ammonia at 0. Typically the more fish the more water changes.
Sounds good, but if you've got a good(and with a big filter capacity).. um.. what do you call it? That big filter(ofc with a pump) which you have outside the aquarium? My english is too bad :<
Anyway, if that pump is big and godd enough you can wait longer between the water changes, but if you have the time to change water, why not? :)
Yep, the bigger the filter the better, and 2 filters is great too. I find the most important thing about water changes is vacuuming the gravel thoroughly. Stuff builds up, especially in heavily stocked aquariums.
Yes, the gravel holds alot of dirt and bacteria. I don't vacuuming the whole aquarium, just taking half one week, and when it's time for the other waterchange I just take the other half, so I always can ensure that I've got bacteria in my aquarium if I clean the filter etc :)
K here's what I do because I talked 2 A professional aquariumnist (or whatever u want to call it) n he told 1.me 2 not gravle vac 2.He told me for my 55 gallon tank to take out only 5.5 gallons. The reason why is because you A.don't want 2 shock your fish B.you have to recognize that you are making an ARTIFICIAL ENVIORMENT not a chemicaly based jail C. You want your bacteria to grow to make an artificial enviorment
Okay, i'm cycling my tank. At anytime during the tank cycle, am i allowed to do at least a 25% water change? also, once the cylcing is donedo i only do 25 percent water hanges and siphoning the gravel from then on?
As a long time hobbiest with two decades of experience I can tell that what is being describes here is a minimal WEEKLY waterchange. the assertion that removing too much water removes beneficial bacteria is COMPLETELY FALSE. The bacteria colonize the bio-media in the filter and will also colonize the internal surfaces of the filter , intake tubes. Cleaning a filter in the manner shown will remove a significant amount of your Beneficial bacteria colony.
@joelsfish umm acctualy no. The beneficial builds up in the gravel and growing algae. It does grow in the filter, tubes etc. but if you remove too much water you will remove alot of the good bacteria.
@MaStErPhReSh333 not really. I don't think thats true. I have a sponge in my filter that allows the bacteria to grow on it. So when I take the filter media OUT, the sponge stays IN, and a new filter media is placed in. =) So I don't really "lose" any of the bacteria.
easy way to have freshwater when you change and have it looking clear instead of using water from your sink to replace the water in the tank with spring water witch or any other name brand water companies(no cheap waters) with good filtered and clean water already instead of using chemicals to clean the tap water
If your tank is TOTALLY CYCLED then maybe and just maybe you could wait a month. I would not recomend waiting a whole month, especially if you have goldfish or other high waste producing fish.
It's best to do small, frequent water changes (15-30%) rather than large and rare changes of 40% or more.
One a week is best for your fish because the most important thing you can posibly do for them is keep their water quality very good.
by cleaning the filter in tap water, you kill the bacteria because of the chlorine and chloramines in the water. if you siphon tank water into a bucket and rinse the filter in the bucket, you'll still have most of your bacteria
Well until now i never had a clue myself... i have been takin all the water out... wash the stones and have fresh water... from last couple of years...
Absolutely! One a month, unplug it, take it to a sink, take it apart, and use a new "fish-only" designated toothbrush to clean out all the parts in warm tapwater. Replace the filter cartriges once a month. You can rinse and re-use the pads and/or carbon media bags a MAXIMUM of 2 times. Beyond that, they'll end up leaking bad chemicals and excess nutrients back into your tank- the opposite of what a filter should do, right? And 10% weekly water changes are superior to monthly 25% changes.
Damn! O.O Is it a predatory fish system? Turtles? Do you overfeed? I mean, 30% is a pretty substantial change to do every week. If you've got dirty fish (like goldfish) then it all makes sense.
You should have plenty of bacteria in your substrate and decorations. There will come a time when you have no choice but to toss the old cartridge. It shouldn't have that big an impact on the system at all.
depends on what tank really. some people have barebottom tanks so they can vac poop easily for better water quality, especially when they're growing fish so their growth isn't stunted
cartridges more bacteria than gravel because of higher surface area, and there's more water passing through them than the gravel
People with barebottom tanks generally do more work to remove waste since there are less biological means of waste metabolism by bacterial colonies. Plus, I'm pretty sure that an inch-deep gravel bed that's in a well-established tank houses more individual bacteria than a couple of filter sponges. Substrate, in te end, is more important. But you are correct- it's important to look at the individual tank, as bacteria productivity and metabolism varies greatly from system to system.
this video is not good at all...You can that we doesn't care about the fishes....What happens if you have any baby fishes hiding in the plants that he took off ??? Stress taking the plants right way like that??? don't like it at all....
I can't believe this... I have 1 (one) fish, a 5" gold fish. He is 12 yrs. old with cateracs(sp). He is alone because he kills everytnhing we have placed in there. Yes, even snails. I have him in a 40 gal. tank. For all of these yrs. I've always taken all of the water out after removing him to a seperate tank. I wash all the rocks & the filter system, as well as the tank it's self. Lately I've seen a great deel of alge on the tank walls.

easy way to have freshwater when you change and have it looking clear instead of using water from your sink to replace the water in the tank with spring water witch or any other name brand water companies(no cheap waters) with good filtered and clean water already instead of using chemicals to clean the tap water

One a week is best for your fish because the most important thing you can posibly do for them is keep their water quality very good.

change 30 percent weekly is dump.

i thought your not suppose to clean your filter like that since your removing all the good bacteria?
herald9 2 years ago
yay this guy doesnt give the best advice.
ianIPMian 2 years ago
by cleaning the filter in tap water, you kill the bacteria because of the chlorine and chloramines in the water. if you siphon tank water into a bucket and rinse the filter in the bucket, you'll still have most of your bacteria

Lol! Am I the only bloke who takes out all the water out of the tank? Been doing that for 9 years and it's never done the fish any harm.
gibsonguitarist2006 2 years ago
Well until now i never had a clue myself... i have been takin all the water out... wash the stones and have fresh water... from last couple of years...
Gunnerzpast90 2 years ago
Do you have to clean the filter out? I'm guessing yes... but just making sure.
peanut26w 2 years ago
It's a good idea to just clean half of the filter. the filter holds much of the important bacteria that keeps your tank balanced.
warpedmind41 2 years ago 2
SQUILLA898 2 years ago
i change 30 percent weekly
osvas23 2 years ago 2
Damn! O.O Is it a predatory fish system? Turtles? Do you overfeed? I mean, 30% is a pretty substantial change to do every week. If you've got dirty fish (like goldfish) then it all makes sense.
SQUILLA898 2 years ago
"Beyond that, they'll end up leaking bad chemicals and excess nutrients back into your tank- the opposite of what a filter should do, right?"
And by completely tossing away the filter cartridges, you're throwing the benefical bacteria away, right?
irbenson 2 years ago
You should have plenty of bacteria in your substrate and decorations. There will come a time when you have no choice but to toss the old cartridge. It shouldn't have that big an impact on the system at all.
SQUILLA898 2 years ago
depends on what tank really. some people have barebottom tanks so they can vac poop easily for better water quality, especially when they're growing fish so their growth isn't stunted
cartridges more bacteria than gravel because of higher surface area, and there's more water passing through them than the gravel
irbenson 2 years ago
People with barebottom tanks generally do more work to remove waste since there are less biological means of waste metabolism by bacterial colonies. Plus, I'm pretty sure that an inch-deep gravel bed that's in a well-established tank houses more individual bacteria than a couple of filter sponges. Substrate, in te end, is more important. But you are correct- it's important to look at the individual tank, as bacteria productivity and metabolism varies greatly from system to system.

lol why the hell are u taking out ALL plants?

I can't believe this... I have 1 (one) fish, a 5" gold fish. He is 12 yrs. old with cateracs(sp). He is alone because he kills everytnhing we have placed in there. Yes, even snails. I have him in a 40 gal. tank. For all of these yrs. I've always taken all of the water out after removing him to a seperate tank. I wash all the rocks & the filter system, as well as the tank it's self. Lately I've seen a great deel of alge on the tank walls.
GrilledCheesenPickle 3 years ago
You don't need to change the filter pad unless its falling apart. Its where good bacteria grows.
andrewajt62 3 years ago
missed alot of info. you need to clean the filter sponge with the aquarium water
