Another Victory for the Seals - The door to one of the largest markets for seal products has now been slammed shut – the Customs Union of Belarus, Kazakhstan, and the Russian Federation has banned the import and export of harp seal skins. It’s the biggest victory in the campaign to end commercial sealing since the European Union (EU) banned non-Inuit seal products.
The Canadian Coast Guard are a bunch of pussies for allowing this to happen. They should have arrested the Sea Shepherd's entire crew and seized their ship. The Sea Shepherds are criminals. People have been depending on whaling and the seal trade for hundreds of years. It's their livelihood. In all the years that whaling and sealing has been going on there are still no depleted seal or whale populations. One country whaling cannot kill that many whales. Common sense.
@swampcat1 Do you realize how little everyone cares about spelling, and grammar on YOUTUBE!! I'm not writing a memoir, i just put a comment dumbass. Do you realize what a fat fuck Paul Watson is he lied about being shot, he lied about his crew being kidnapped, he rams other people ships but when someone hits him he cries. He is a coward did you notice that every time they go through an ice field he hides in his room, its because if something bad happens he doesn't want to be responsible.
@swampcat1 someone is trying to hard to be a smart-ass. If you like these Hippies why don't you join them, and get arrested with them. Tell you what we see your ship in our waters one more time and we'll try to make it more than just arresting. i wish i whould have been there to arrest these F*cking hippies.
FUCK THE SEALS ARE YOU GUYS FOR REAL WAKE UP ITS THE NORTHERN ECONOMY THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE WOULD STARVE/FREEZE IF THEY COULD KILL FUCKING SEALS GET A BRAIN YOU STUPID CITY FUCKS
Imagine if you got hijacked by a schoolteacher - you just might learn to string a sentence together without filling it with spelling and grammatical mistakes :()
If we continue with this mentality, there will be nothing left on earth and oceans to hunt, and I can garanty that we will be next, I admire what the Sea Shepperd is doing, there are the only one doing something about all this money corrupted busness
Thanks God for people brave enough to risk their own lives to show the world the hidden dirty secrets our so called developed country hides under the rug!
Hopefully we will at some point and time reveal all the dirty secrets so this will come full stop. That and the Grizzly bear hunt, the slaughter of 220.000 seals on Sable Island.
this damn boat had no right to be in our waters...... why the hell is it no one can accept that those waters are canadian controlled..... And while you damn hippies stop people from hunting seals people around the world starve to death because there is not enough food and then some go on to say they would like to see the fishermen killed because they killed seals..... Animals have been killed to eat since the beginng.... why the hell is it such a big deal now??
The 'big deal' is, for one, the seals aren't killed for food. In almost all cases their corpses are left on the ice to rot and only the skins are used. What for? Oh, such essential items such as wallets, handbags and slippers!
Civilised peope worldwide also object to the inhumane killing methods used which often lead to severely wounded seals escaping to suffer a slow, painful death and others are skinned whilst still alive.
@swampcat1 Yeah thats BS.... My uncle is a seal fisher man and he makes sure he uses what he kills... And u think that they skin them alive? Where u get your info? Green Peace? skinning a animal while it is still alive fills the muscles with adreniline and therefore makes the meat taste like crap.. And you saying some get away wounded? Now thats just a bad seal hunter.. And if it did get away it would feed some other animal. and if the seals were in danger they would be protected idiot...
its about economic survival for those who depend on this as their living.
They have a right to use this as their method of economic survival as its enviornmentally safe and the number of seals is not even close to being at risk let alone being endangered.
This is about animal rights fanatics, or I call them terrorists, trying to make others conform to their own points of view.
"I don't like it, so you can't do it" kinda of behavior, I find unacceptable.
""I don't like it, so you can't do it" kinda of behavior, I find unacceptable."
LOL thats how most of the world works buddy.
And its not just the numbers killed its how they kill them. In pretty much any other Western countries in the world, and probably Canada too if it was a dog or something that would be completely illegal and seen as animal cruelty and the people doing it would be thrown in jail.
@chrisdef15 sure it doesn't make it right, but chickens make money, so do fish, turkeys, pigs, cows, trees and so on. The world has always had a food chain that operates realistically. I think humans that live in this "new world idealism" are blind to reality and need to accept that just because we have computers and synthetic fake food, the world will still operate how it has for millions of years in certain aspects. And it's not wrong, it's just the way it is
@chrisdef15 how does shooting an animal on a block of ice make in any diferent than in a factory? Everyone has an opinion, and everyone thinks theirs are right. Do you think it's right that cats are killed and eatin in china? no? The muslims don't agree with pork being eatin here in america?!?! who is right??? again, some people need to accept the way the world runs and get their head out of the ideology that isnt realistic.
First in a factory they arent just shot they usually get a special bolt to the brain that kills them instantly and also they are captive bred animals rather then wild.
But the biggest thing is your kidding yourself if you think they are all shot. Large numbers of them are clubbed/beaten to death.
@GrasshopperTW they do have weapons on there ship like shotguns and pistol but its not used like military they dont carry it around, its jjust used for emergency.
"Who's to tell the inuit not to eat seal meat"? = ANY GOOD RESPONSIBLE HUMAN WHO CARES FOR THE INUIT.
Seal meat contains Methyl mercuric poison. Mercury seeps into the brain, causing damage to anyone who eats it. Anyone eating seal meat can receive organ damage, mental retardation, illness & sickness. (Don't bother saying "but they did it for 3000years", that was then, this is now.) Ironically Inuit are now among the most contaminated people on earth.
While i agree selling for luxury items is wrong who is going to tell fishermen and natives who need the seals for food ect they can no longer hunt? The Inuit have hunted seals for years as a source of food. Who is too tell them the harp seal is no longer allowed to be hunted?
The protests having nothing to do with the Inuit subsistence hunt of adult seals for meat. You know that. The target of these protests is/was the White-man's, commercial slaughter of baby animals for their fur alone. Accoring to DFO statistics, In 2006, less than 4% of the edible biomass generated by the hunt was eventually sold as "meat". What happened to the rest? Left on the ice or thrown back in the water only to rot and create oxygen poor water. This inhibits the recovery of the Cod.
Yea i know that but im just pissed off that they added the seals killed by the natives into their numbers. The natives out of everyone in the world know how valuable the seal is since its a primary source of many things for them. If they didnt add the Inuits numbers or the attempted banning of all Canadian sea food products i would cheer them on.
A person who cares for the inuit is the person to tell them the seal hunt is no longer allowed.
Seal meat is infected with PCB's, Lead, and Toxaphene, which is killing the inuit and causing their children to be born deformed.
Stop the hunt, take the millions govt pours on commercial sealers & Give it to the inuit! Solved. Provide reams of food, schools, goods, clothing, medicine!
The persons who want to see inuit die would be the ones who facilitate Inuit to continue eating toxic seal meat.
So you are basically saying lets remove there freedom of chocie eh?
Seals are part of their culture and while it contains poison is it not there choice to eat it? Is there lifestyle not dependent on it as a natural source of food? You basically telling us to destroy more of their culture? Ruin more native lifestyles? A problem though how you going to ship them all this stuff? No roads very little travel time for ships and we dont have the money to be flying to every corner of our arctic
Many inuit are still nomadic or live in very small communities. We dont have the money to be keeping a constant flow of food to them all year long to remove seal meat from their lives. They dont have a choice unless you are propsing to enforce govt rules on them and destroy there ways of life. Look at other natives who have lost their cultures its disgusting what they turned into due to us. You proposing to do the same with our inuit?
Im not trying to be a jackass but they have little choice in there food and we cannot supply them with constant food either. Its not possible the task would be a tremendous undertaking costing lots of money and making them dependent on us for more food. Look what happened when we relocated them into villages from their difficult nomadic lives. Yea they got clothing cooked meat and schooling ect, but they lost a great deal as well. What may seem insignificant to us can have great reprocutions
They call that ramming lmao. Thats grazing! Also how come everyone is having freak attacks over modern hunting? I dont see anyone going out of their way to save the fully grown seal 20 years ago even though they were killed more often and suffered horrible. A bullet or shattering of the skull is less painful then a spear through the eye/body then being dragged out onto the ice sliced open and bled out. Didnt see anyone lift a finger then did we?
The reason most people don't protest the killing of 20 year old seals is because those people who do are mostly Aboriginals. They eat what they kill and they have almost no other menu options. Even PETA issued a statement saying that very few cultures actually need to kill in order to survive, but if it is truly a survival issue then they don't object.
Yea but the point i was trying to get across is these guys were adding the inuit seal hunting into the overall seal hunt. The Luxury hunt i say go fuck thereselves. Ban those products. But dont ban other hard earned fishing products or add the Inuit seal kills to the luxury kills to further there agenda. If they didnt do those two things i would support them like i do in their shark campaign
For accurate numbers on annual harp seal kills I rely on the European Food Safety Authorities report of 2007. These are strictly divided into various hunts. Aboriginal/White. Off the top of my head they look something like this.
2006: 324,000
2007: 234,000
2008: 218,000
2009: 60,000
Was SSCS adding Inuit subsistence numbers to their report? Huh. Can you send me a link to that? Yeah. Shark finning has decimated shark populations. Go Sea Shepherd. Kick some ass.
It was a while back so no i cant send you a link but yea they added the inuit hunt to the 2008 numbers i believe. It wasnt in any report i know of but it was just on one of their pages describing the seal hunt. It ticked me off cause im a big fan of the natives and the Inuit are the strongest ones we got left
Ya ive seen movies on the finning industry. Its horrifying and they are breaking laws if im not mistaken. People dont jump for sharks because sharks are seen as monsters yet a vending machine has a greater chance of killing you lol
Sea Shepard people still need to back the hell off they got way too close even in one of these shots in this video and the Coast Guard Stoped them... Danny Williams says it best., "I think what a lot of people don't realize is that this man is a terrorist." (paul watson)........
very happy to hear europe's ban on canadian seals, seen it on the news while ago, now if only our own govn't will follow suit and get rid of the seal hunt completely. it's really heartbreaking to know that this is happening in the country i live in, very shameful.
Today is a day to celebrate. The European Union has slammed shut the door on trade in the products of the commercial seal slaughter.
The Canadian government used every trick in the book to try to derail the ban: massive lobbying, misinformation, and even threats of trade reprisals. But the EU stood its ground and honored its citizens opposition to this trade in cruelty. By doing so, the EU has saved millions of seals from a horrible fate.
that good because now we will select boycotts of EU Products mainly manufactured goods like AIRBUS Airlines . Canada Buys Twice the amount of goods from the EU then the EU from Canada and what you do buy is Raw materials that are then turned into finished goods. We will cripple you
You're saying that Canada as a whole will throw all its toys out of the pram in retaliation?
What a joke!
Most Canadians I know are decent, folks with a high degree of common sense. They have no interest in supporting the neanderthal seal murderers who have brought such shame on their country for so many years.
Sure why should we put up with Europe who enslaved half the world with their colonialism , had continental land wars among each other for generations. Steve Harper has said in the past Ban Seal products and you can for some Hurt on Europe . Banding Airbus or any defence spending from European Contractors would be a very good start . A Tank from the US is as Good a a German tank . The seal hunt a 2 million dollar enterprise could cost 500 million in leppard 2 tanks . Some victory HUH
This is a big win for Canada! And that means the GOOD canadians and the EU & all the world, against the tiny little pack of disgusting Sealers that 99% of canada plus the Eu, plus the USA, plus 40 other countries around the world are against! Canadians can now celebrate that the EU helped Canada get rid of the stench of the little 1% of repugnant special interest group Seal beating criminals that have blackmailed good Canadians and stunk up canada. EU helped canada unstink itself from Sealers :)
US BANNED your seal products already! So you can't order from them you hypocrite! haha.
Hey guess what, now, you can't buy anything from Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Austria, Slovenia, as well as, Croatia, Mexico, Panama, Switzerland, nothing from the USA, even Russia. All NAFTA has banned you! Everyone is against you small pittance of Sealers & pro-sealer wannabes.
The world is with the 99% of Good canadians, not you small fraction of Anti-Canadian infant beaters.
Don't mind if I stop by and trash your place? Oh, I see, it's fine as it happens to someone who's doing something you disagree with huh?
No dreaming here. That seal hunters' ship your heroes disabled in 2008 capsized, killing 4 people on board. The sealers, on the other hand, are not murders. They've killed seals but not people. Oh, but don't worry, I see that changing one of these days.
You see ArrowHead (you should change that to ButtHead) you're really showing your ignorance now. Those four sealers died by going out in an unsuitable boat and being towed by an incompetent Canadian Coast Guard. The DFO ordered the Coast Guard cutter to help the stuck seal boat. The CCG then tried to pull the seal boat out of the ice, while the sealers were onboard. Due to DFO & CCG incompetence, they towed the boat over a chunk of ice, flipped it, and plunged 4 Canadian citizens to their death.
"Three men died and one remains lost at sea after L'Acadien flipped over *while it was under tow early Saturday from a Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker*."
1. Sea Shepherd was NOWHERE near it.
2. The Coast Guard is operated by the DFO.
3. The DFO runs the Seal hunt.
It means the people who operate the Seal Hunt KILLED THEIR OWN PEOPLE!
@AdmiralGarth3903 honestly i dont knoe why people put it that way they didnt mean to hurt anyone, coast guards are amzing and they try to help peple everyday so dont disrespect that.
to user swamp cat. go put paultaylor42 into google and see what comes up. look at search results. paultaylor42 has been going around on the internet on "speed date" dating sites trying to pick up men over the internet. Lol! Go look at this old 47 year old man no wonder he beats seals.
Haha, this paultaylor42 guy is an idiot. 1st of all, he apparently doesn't know much about the WTO. In the WTO document there already exists a specific exemption that ALLOWS a country to Ban products if they are inhumane! It's granted! EU is 100% WTO Lawful. And the entire point of the WTO is to fine countries that "retalliate" or do things simply to "cripple" another country. So Everything HE posted is in violation & would sock Canada with the huge fines. His post could even stand as evidence.
EX Navy here. It is documented and proven fact that two vessels underway in the same direction will, if they come close actually draw one another together with the smaller vessel being drawn more towards the larger vessel. That is why when you see videos of Navy ship refueling with lines and fuel hoses stretched across from one another they are quite some distance away to prevent this problem from happening.
During the second hit the CCG isn't moving.........So how did they ram the sea shepherd. There is no wake being made by the CCG so explain that? I could be wrong I dont have a ton of exp with boats, but I think I'm right.
It is fine that you have an opinion against Seal hunting, but you are not correct in that Canada has no right to do what they did to the SS. Maritime law gives Canada full legal right to seize the Sea Shepherd whether we like it or not.
Families of 4 Dead Sealers confirmed today that the Canadian Coast Guard has killed 4 people & taken Human lives. In a botched "rescue" attempt by the DFO (the organization that tells sealers to go out into unsafe waters) the maritime incompetence of the Coast Guard & DFO killed 4 Canadian Seal Clubbers. [This occurred Nowhere near protesters, who have a perfect clean safety record.] The DFO Seal Hunt people are the only ones to ever kill a man.
Wow if people acctually read the Transport Canada Report of the invesitgation instead of listening to the propoganda posted by pirates on ships like these then they would be better informed. The Canadian Coast Guard is protecting the sealers from the pirates on board these ships who are "helping the seals" yet they are willing to let the sealers die, they people who are simply trying to make a living. And the people died aboard the ship that sank because they decided to go sleep GO AND READ IT!!
It is a good thing that people like the crew of the Sea Shepherd risk their lives to protect vulnerable creatures and inform the rest of the world what goes on in these remote places. I have the greatest respect for them!
The Seal hunt should be stopped, The seal hunt has now killed 4 people. If the seal hunt did not exist & the sealers stayed home, they would be safe, and 4 people would not be dead today. Therefore the hunt needs to be immediately stopped.
The Canadian Coast Guard itself was found at fault & is guilty of incompetence & negligent human death. If the Coast Guard can't even pay attention to notice they killed people they sure cant be trusted to notice where they are going. CG hit the other vessel.

Two people died on BC highways yesterdays - suppose we should down all highways. Kids die riding bikes - lets make bikes illegal, hell even toasters have killed people and as such lets ban toasters too. Paul martin once said "if you dont like gay marriage, then don't marry someone of the same sex" If you dont like Seal hunting, then dont fucking go hunting Seals or attempt to force your beliefs on others - you are only one of 6 billion, you are not really that important so get over yourself!!
BranVam is an example of how stupid Seal Clubbers are. According to his logic: This sealer thinks "if you don't like your sister getting raped don't rape your sister", or "if you don't like someone committing the murder of your parents, then dont murder your parents". Seal meat contains Mercury. Eating seal meat which contains Mercury lowers IQ, stunts intelligence, and obviously BranVam as well as Sealers have ingested it and now have brain tissue bathed in Methyl mercury waste.

so a bunch of eco-terrorists on some crappy ship are questioning the competency and motives of a professional martime service that is dedicated to saving lives, even if those live belonged to dumbasses who deliberately rammed them? Sweet dude.
Did you conveniently forget how your oh-so competent 'professional maritime service' killed four sealers earlier this year owing to rheir total incompetence and unprofessionalism?

Seal hunters live on isolated islands. They take the seals from the sea, and live off the land of their home islands. No grocery stores, no home depot, no nothing. Their footprint on the earth is less then everyone who protests the seal hunt. If we slaughtered all the animals we eat on white ice people would protest everything. The images produce the protest, not the impact on the seal population. Stop pointing fingers from your suburban city home.
So, you're saying the sealers have no access to grocery stores, hence nowhere to buy food, so they have no choice but to head out on the ice and bash in some baby seal's skull in order to eat it?
So why, after they've skinned the (often still breathing) baby seal, do they dump it's carcass back on the ice and leave it to rot?
Well, sounds like the 4 seal hunters met a somewhat grisly accidental death. However, these are the same people who have no problem brutally clubbing hundreds of innocent, baby seals and skinning them alive so it looks like they got a heaping dose of Karma. Too bad, so sad.

No actually my fiance works in the fisheries as an observer (someone who makes sure people don't do illegal things on boats) and he says the Farley Mowat was within the 200 mile limit of Canadian Waters. Paul Watson has been telling people it's international waters, the RCMP, DFO, and Coast Guard say that is false. Just look at where they were, they were close to the seal hunt therefore they were within the 200 mile limit.
Canadian waters only reach 12 miles out, not 200 miles!
The Farley Mowat was outside that 12 mile zone and therefore in International waters as you will see when the case eventually goes to court and the Canadian taxpayers are yet again forced to pay Sea Shepherd because of the incompetence of their coastguard service.

Yes, but in the interest of safety one could venture to argue that the Coast Guard was merely trying to keep the Sheperds from being trapped in ice, no? Is this vessel, the Sheperds', even rated to go near thick ice patches like that? Hell, even crab boats have a hard time with ice that thick and they're meant for those waters. I have to play devil's advocate here and say that the grazes were just to shy them away more than anything. Still, it's stupid they tried to cover it up.
xhandbasketx - if you were to input 'Farley Mowat' into Wikipedia you would read:
'The R/V Farley Mowat is the flagship of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society's fleet, and is a long-range, ice-class, heavy-duty conservation ship. Originally built as a Norwegian fisheries research and enforcement vessel'.
So, YES, the Farley Mowat certainly is rated for these conditions.
If the Coastguard wanted to warn the Farley Mowat off, all they had to do was use their RADIO!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
See that's the problem I was having. In the description you've stated "registered as a private yacht." By the radio communication, however, it's kind of obvious the Coast Guard and Mowat crews were in communication, and it seems the Mowat was ignoring the verbal warnings. Still, it isn't right how this was carried out, if they were going to resort to "grazing" they might as well had simply boarded and arrested. It would of been far safer. Glancing is too risky a tactic.
The Sea Shepherd's ship, Farley Mowat is an ICE-CLASS, heavy-duty, long-range, enforcement vessel.
It has a 1-inch thick riveted, welded steel hull which was built to withstand the pounding of ocean ice.
The Sea Shepherd vessel has a proven success record on voyages in both the far North Arctic & the Southern Antarctic ice fields. It has passed through the Panama canal multiple times as well as navigating the infamous storm-haunted North Sea. It's the seal boats that are ill-equipped.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Actually according to International Marine Law articles 19, 21, 25, 39, 40, 73, 91, 110, 111 among others gives Canada the right to seize the vessel. The position of Newfoundland, cape Breton, as well other islands capable of human habitation does throw some twists into the matter, but these twists would likely favour the Canadian Gov.
It is the seal hunters vessels that are thin or made out of soft frail wood. The sealers boats are not rated ice-class. They are a dangerous liability to allow out there. Yet the Fisheries Dept irresponsibly urges them to go & recently over 400+ sealer vessels got either crushed, damaged or hurt in the ice & had to be rescued, costing good Canadians against the seal hunt millions in Air & Sea rescue fees(!) Another example of incompetence on the part of the Seal Hunt, the Canadian DFO & the CCG.
Once again. Everything BrittanyPage posted is FALSE.
Poor maritime knowledge, attempting to mislead.
200 mile limit is NOT CANADA'S TERRITORIAL WATERS! 200 miles is an Economic Exclusion Zone EEZ established in 1977 for *COMMERCIAL* vessels! TERRITORIAL waters are 12-miles!
Maritime rules permit free passage of a NON-COMMERCIAL vessel (which it is) safe harbour passage all through the 200 mile zone!
"Observer" = Someone who's on the payroll of the DFO, which manipulates the Coast Guard, which killed 4 sealers, And who is a PRO-SEALER who goes around overlooking 650 Sealer buddy's blatant violations of the MMR and reports little!
1 more time 200 mile DOES NOT MATTER. FM is non-commercial, Dutch vessel, Registered as a yacht, entitled to clear passage within 200 mile EEZ and was Not within the 12mile territorial waters.
Unwed girlfriend of a report-1-out-of-1000 violation pro-sealer.
Ha, this comment is from some neanderthal who wants to see wolves driven to extinction because they (naturally) hunt the cattle being introduced to their territory.

Sure, the Shepherds ram other ships in another part of the world and then complain about getting rammed themselves! Yeah, what aweful lawless Canadian ship captains they must be. I suppose anyone with a camera can make it appear that way. They are such fakes.
Rhenke - Yes, Sea Shepherd happily rams pirate whaling vessels and the like if they are operating illegally.
The difference here is that the Sea Shepherd vessel was doing nothing illegal and was in international waters.
If they were the ones ramming the coastguard don't you think charges would have been brought?
By the way, I just checked your profile - those videos of the inside of empty airliners look very exciting and an extremely productive way to spend your time. LOL.
And no fishing is properly regulated - which is why all the ocean's fish stocks are collapsing. I have no pity for sealers and fishermen who are losing their livelihood when they have driven themselves out of business through their unsustainable and barbarous practices.
If the only way you can make a living is by the industrial killing of other sentients then you don't deserve to make a living.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The only reason that the fish stocks of the Grand Banks collapsed was because european scumbags were coming over and dragging everything out of the ocean just outside our waters. Now that we own more of the water, and STRICTLY regulate it, the stocks are rising. Don't yap about that which you know nothing of.
Ha! Just like a fisherman to shuffle the responsibility off on someone else. Yes, many are foreign, but all fishermen since the advent of modern, corporate industry and technology (sonar, etc.) have been fishing unsustainably. Fish stocks are NOT recovering, and the continued fishing is only making things worse.
The most offensive thing is that sealers, in similar fashion to you, shuffle off the blame of their own overfishing on the seals, and use this as justification for slaughtering them.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The Canadian government cod fishing, and because of this ban, it will again become sustainable. You really are delusional if you think otherwise. As well, the sea hunt is sustainable. They are NOT an endangered species, and we're keeping the population steady at around 5 million. Yes we overfished before, but we HAVE learned something from our screw-ups. Fish stocks will recover as long as the seal population doesn't explode, and we maintain our ban on cod fishing. I'm a student, by the way.

looks to me it is the SS ramming the coast guard! SS are cowards and criminals who would spear no life or livelyhood for the sake of their own narrow opinions. They should be criminalised and banned from operating anywhere.
Yes, I have indded observed the kind of respect they show fellow human beings while ramming small vessels off the coast of Norway. How about sneaking around in cover of the dark, sinking fishing boats and thereby depriving up to 10 families of an income for the next year. If you fail to see that this is criminal activity, then I am afraid you will never win through with your argumentation. I would also argue that the activities of SS (what an appropriate acronym) is contrary to the cause.
Never once claimed to be an expert...and don't have any "fantasy-land beliefs" MANY others believe the same thing and as for "that shit doesn't fly out here" maybe if they tried it MIGHT..now since you haven't had a mature response in here withOUT swearing and calling people names this will be my last response to you since these are all opinions which even if you don't like it we are all entitled to..when people are doing things that aren't wrong they don't get so defensively angry.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
okay, how about if I promise not to swear? I get passionate (not defensively angry) about my part of the world, and our ways of life. If you took the time of day to actually look into the whole picture, with an open mind, you'd realize how the "animal rights" groups use this way of life for their own benefit. Seals are NOT endangered, however, they ARE cute. I know it's a hard pill to swallow, but these are honest, hardworking, GOOD men, doing what they have to do to feed their wives & children.
I have looked at it with a very open mind..it wasn't the animal rights activists that I had first seen any of this it was from a friend who was doing a paper on it with an even more open mind than me. I was ignorantly oblivious to this until about 3 months ago when she came for a visit and I saw her video and pictures. That was where I formed my feelings and decisions on this matter. Never did I say they weren't GOOD men..I don't agree with their decisions in supporting their families.
"Fisheries Minister Tom Rideout said the province and Ottawa have spent a lot of money over the years trying to develop markets for seal meat -- without a lot of success." : CBC NEWS
"Korea bought ...three years ago, but that dropped"
"buyers are not paying enough money to cover the cost of producing the meat."
"Most of the carcasses were left on the ice."
-Fisheries minister said.
The real story.
Millions of taxpayer dollars squandered. on that filth.
Seal hunt caused boycotts of atlantic seafood hitting canada from nations all over the world . From people disgusted with Canada allowing the butchers to continue the seal hunt.
Good people getting bad tastes in their mouth from Canada allowing sealers to continue resulted in boycotts of trade & Canadian seafood products now climbing to nearly 400 million dollars. thats near half a billion in losses all due to the sealers. sealers hurting their country due to their own selfinterest.
Again, if this is all true then why does the hunt still occur, en masse, every year? No government with the tiniest iota of sense would try to maintain such a thing, let alone defend it. So the options are:
a) It makes money.
b) We enjoy killing things.
I'd go for the first one based on the information I know, but you can go for the second if you'd so please.
Yes, I know many companies now that have pulled out of Canada due to bad reputation of the seal hunt. Just 1 for example, a company was going to invest and open in Newfoundland. They brought 152 jobs. Average 20 to 100 thousand dollars salary from worker to manager. Then they learned about the stink of the seal hunt. And they told them bye, and pulled out.
150 jobs @ average 50thousand say is about 7 million people-dollars all lost. And thats Just 1. Another one pulled 200million.
Of course that can happen, and if it ever reaches dangerous levels then I fully support the modification of Canada's policies towards seal. But it hasn't, so I don't.
Canada in fact Loses money over the seal hunt. ALL of Canada's nafta partners have banned it. they have banned all canadian seal products. USA has banned Canadian seal products. Mexico has banned it. The Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Belgium have all added trade sanctions Against Canada due to the seal hunt. Luxembourg even banned it. The entire European Union is now ready to bring the hammer down and penalize Canada over the disgusting seal hunt. The losses to Canada from sealers are staggering.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Canada just reached an agreement relating to the exporting of seal meat to Korea, which adds it to the list of major asian nations which buy hge amounts of seal products. Scandinavian countries buy the pelts, they have always bought the pelts, there was never a substatial north american market for seal products.
"seal meat to korea..." -FALSE. Canada spent millions of dollars in futile attempts to get anyone to buy their rotten meat. Nobody wanted it. They spent taxpayer dollars on meetings & begging Korea since 1999 who refused it. Then in 2004 Korea bought some and it was so awful the next year they declined and Korea today doesn't want it and their import is down to a failure of a pittance.
Canada has international reputation that is normally good, but where all people make a face when they hear the name of Canada now all because of a few sealers. People thought of Canada as nice, until they see these sealers posting sealer propaganda. Then everyone sees they are just like everybody else and nasty.
Really? That's rather sad. I haven't observed this personally, but I can believe that it has happened with certain individuals. Is hunting something really that bad? I have to hear someone tell me a reason why, save for "I'm morally outraged by it" which is perfectly valid, but not a reason to change policy. Do you really think I'm a bad person posting propaganda?
Hey, some fat lazy "poor stupid starving sealer (aww! pity party) who dont know how to get a real job" only knows how to crush the skull of something that cant get away, could sit at home, safer, not exposed to dangers of ice, Not kill seals, and just have govt pay all sealers that amount that their seal hunt brings in, and it would ~save~ money! omg! No human deaths, no seal deaths, and save money! it would save the nation $15 million dollars cost less to pay them to stay the f home! Stinkers
How precisely, would putting several entire communities on welfare stimulate the economy? Why do you think the federal goverment allows it if it loses all the money you say it loses? Why is hunting not a "real job"?
Look, you, sorry-person. Taxpayers including poor Canadians working elsewhere for minimum to support same poor families pay 25 million dollars in taxes then spent on Coast Guard clearing ice path for sealers alone. Also cost 4 peoples lives. Now You have by law a TAC. Total allowable catch. That number is 275,000. Now you go to Carino seal pelt site and look up price of 1 pelt. 2008 is 34 dollars. Now you go open calculator and multiply. That's how much hunt earns. Only 9mil! It causes DEBT!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I'm sorry, but what precisely do you mean? I know that the federal allocation of funding to the coast guard is around 25 million. But that funding would be given regardless of sealing. Everyone from commercial fishermen to bottled water manufacturers to tourists uses those waters. And don't think that pelts are the only byproduct of the seal hunt. Everything from meat to collagen is sold.
"Federal allocation" -FALSE! The allocation to CCG for all is over 200 million! 24 million is the portion wasted exclusively on ice cracking paths directly to seal whelping grounds.
"given regardless" -FALSE! The only part needed is the St lawrence, not the paths to the seals birthing grounds! No bottled water deliveries there, bozo. And StL was subtracted from the 200mil. Leaving still 24mil wasted solely on coddling seal hunters.
"Everything...sold" -FALSE! Most meat & blubber is wasted!
Canadian Violence & Massacre / against courageous Sea Shepherd (IFAW) documenting the Massacre/Crime of Baby Harp Seals by Canada, brutal murder supported by P.M.Harper for Money (Fur to China) & P.Bush, who doesn't give a damn about saving innocent animals, even in his own country.

Can I ask you a question? Can you look a starving seal hunter in the eyes, knowing full well that it is his villages sole source of income, and tell him that he can't support his family because you have a problem with cute things dying? What exactly makes seals worthy of special treatment? Seal meat is exceedingly nutritious, seal fur is durable, and seal collagen has shown incredible potential in laboratory experiments relating to skin cancer. The seal hunt is fine, so long as it's regulated.
sorryass writes: "Can you look a starving seal hunter in the eyes, knowing full well that it is his villages sole source of income, and tell him that he can't..." blah blah more lies.
Damn straight I will. Bring yourself and any sealer here right now and I will tell you straight to your face. And will tell you to quit lying. All of that is a fat lie. No one is starving, you can do other things, The hunt brings in 5 million and loses 50 so the hunt actually cost money from poor taxpayers.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The funny thing is, you'd never do that. Ever. You're telling me this now because you don't have a poor sealer and his family in your face. Besides, the juvenile tone you've taken when you're confronted by something you disagree with proves that you're as infantile as you are ignorant. Your "facts" have less truth to them than my "lies". I advise you to do some research, maybe gain a little civility.
Where is this sealer. I will tell him to his face too! In fact I tell him shame on your face for taking money away from poor canadians, you selfish seal killing unethical pest and greedy shrimp of a man.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
And then he'd cry. He'd cry because of your obvious ignorance of the issue. He'd cry because you unjustly hate him. And he'd cry because you're not the only ignorant person in the world. Of course, I sincerely doubt you'd ever do that. Sealers are by-and-large decent people, salt of the earth if you will. I doubt you be able to hate them so much in person.
In reality there is a high portion of racists among supporters of seal hunting & Sealers.
One newfoundlander on here says offensive stuff to women & he wrote the female word "C@NT!" all over his profile. He says how he loves seal hunting & makes remarks about Asians using racial slurs like "them F(@# slanteyed Chineeee".
Another sealer has the word "Nigg@r" on his page. Another pro seal hunter posted about gassing Jews.
In a sealing areas of canada men are often arrested for assaulting women.
I don't doubt that racist sealers exist, in fact, I know that a portion of sealers are racist. A portion of sealers are also alcoholic, and a portion are sexist. This isn't some type of causal relationship, it's just a corelation due to their low income situation. Also, everyone becomes considerably ruder when given anonymity, or when their lifestyle is attacked.
Well, I would say so. They didn't have a licensed sealer on board and went sealing when the hunt was closed. Are you just going to post vague references ?
These guys decided to go hunting before the starting date in March 2005 and were caught by the DFO, who were observing them by air. They were convicted in June 2006. I don't really see why you're repeating this story because it obviously contradicts any claim that the DFO aren't doing their job. I know you're trying to imply sealers are all criminal but you'll find poachers everywhere...

@elkpointscanner
You're missing the point completely.
The 'big deal' is, for one, the seals aren't killed for food. In almost all cases their corpses are left on the ice to rot and only the skins are used. What for? Oh, such essential items such as wallets, handbags and slippers!
Civilised peope worldwide also object to the inhumane killing methods used which often lead to severely wounded seals escaping to suffer a slow, painful death and others are skinned whilst still alive.
swampcat1 7 months ago
@swampcat1 Yeah thats BS.... My uncle is a seal fisher man and he makes sure he uses what he kills... And u think that they skin them alive? Where u get your info? Green Peace? skinning a animal while it is still alive fills the muscles with adreniline and therefore makes the meat taste like crap.. And you saying some get away wounded? Now thats just a bad seal hunter.. And if it did get away it would feed some other animal. and if the seals were in danger they would be protected idiot...

Animal rights = Animals first, humans last.
Animal Rights activists are individual who seem to dislike their own species. The Seal Hunt is an economic source for those who live in the region.
ccheng21 1 year ago
So?? Just because it makes humans money doesnt make it right.
chrisdef15 1 year ago 2
its about economic survival for those who depend on this as their living.
They have a right to use this as their method of economic survival as its enviornmentally safe and the number of seals is not even close to being at risk let alone being endangered.
This is about animal rights fanatics, or I call them terrorists, trying to make others conform to their own points of view.
"I don't like it, so you can't do it" kinda of behavior, I find unacceptable.
ccheng21 1 year ago
Again so? Get a new job.
""I don't like it, so you can't do it" kinda of behavior, I find unacceptable."
LOL thats how most of the world works buddy.
And its not just the numbers killed its how they kill them. In pretty much any other Western countries in the world, and probably Canada too if it was a dog or something that would be completely illegal and seen as animal cruelty and the people doing it would be thrown in jail.
chrisdef15 1 year ago 2
it is also customary for many native groups to rely on this as a source of their resources.
So I guess uproot native groups and get them to pour into call centers and retail shops then?
ccheng21 1 year ago
Im not saying the natives cant hunt for food, and i dont think SS are either.
chrisdef15 1 year ago
@chrisdef15 sure it doesn't make it right, but chickens make money, so do fish, turkeys, pigs, cows, trees and so on. The world has always had a food chain that operates realistically. I think humans that live in this "new world idealism" are blind to reality and need to accept that just because we have computers and synthetic fake food, the world will still operate how it has for millions of years in certain aspects. And it's not wrong, it's just the way it is
CanadaCoastGrdChris 1 year ago
All those other things you mentioned can and are raised in captivety. And when its time too kill them they are killed Humanely.
Thats is nothing like what happens to the seal's.
chrisdef15 1 year ago
@chrisdef15 how does shooting an animal on a block of ice make in any diferent than in a factory? Everyone has an opinion, and everyone thinks theirs are right. Do you think it's right that cats are killed and eatin in china? no? The muslims don't agree with pork being eatin here in america?!?! who is right??? again, some people need to accept the way the world runs and get their head out of the ideology that isnt realistic.
CanadaCoastGrdChris 1 year ago
First in a factory they arent just shot they usually get a special bolt to the brain that kills them instantly and also they are captive bred animals rather then wild.
But the biggest thing is your kidding yourself if you think they are all shot. Large numbers of them are clubbed/beaten to death.

The person who touts the hunt kills inuit.
AdmiralGarth3903 2 years ago

CoffinCornerX 2 years ago
Yea i know that but im just pissed off that they added the seals killed by the natives into their numbers. The natives out of everyone in the world know how valuable the seal is since its a primary source of many things for them. If they didnt add the Inuits numbers or the attempted banning of all Canadian sea food products i would cheer them on.
72Canadian72 2 years ago
A person who cares for the inuit is the person to tell them the seal hunt is no longer allowed.
Seal meat is infected with PCB's, Lead, and Toxaphene, which is killing the inuit and causing their children to be born deformed.
Stop the hunt, take the millions govt pours on commercial sealers & Give it to the inuit! Solved. Provide reams of food, schools, goods, clothing, medicine!
The persons who want to see inuit die would be the ones who facilitate Inuit to continue eating toxic seal meat.
AdmiralGarth3903 2 years ago
So you are basically saying lets remove there freedom of chocie eh?
Seals are part of their culture and while it contains poison is it not there choice to eat it? Is there lifestyle not dependent on it as a natural source of food? You basically telling us to destroy more of their culture? Ruin more native lifestyles? A problem though how you going to ship them all this stuff? No roads very little travel time for ships and we dont have the money to be flying to every corner of our arctic
72Canadian72 2 years ago
Many inuit are still nomadic or live in very small communities. We dont have the money to be keeping a constant flow of food to them all year long to remove seal meat from their lives. They dont have a choice unless you are propsing to enforce govt rules on them and destroy there ways of life. Look at other natives who have lost their cultures its disgusting what they turned into due to us. You proposing to do the same with our inuit?
72Canadian72 2 years ago
Im not trying to be a jackass but they have little choice in there food and we cannot supply them with constant food either. Its not possible the task would be a tremendous undertaking costing lots of money and making them dependent on us for more food. Look what happened when we relocated them into villages from their difficult nomadic lives. Yea they got clothing cooked meat and schooling ect, but they lost a great deal as well. What may seem insignificant to us can have great reprocutions
72Canadian72 2 years ago
They call that ramming lmao. Thats grazing! Also how come everyone is having freak attacks over modern hunting? I dont see anyone going out of their way to save the fully grown seal 20 years ago even though they were killed more often and suffered horrible. A bullet or shattering of the skull is less painful then a spear through the eye/body then being dragged out onto the ice sliced open and bled out. Didnt see anyone lift a finger then did we?
72Canadian72 2 years ago
The reason most people don't protest the killing of 20 year old seals is because those people who do are mostly Aboriginals. They eat what they kill and they have almost no other menu options. Even PETA issued a statement saying that very few cultures actually need to kill in order to survive, but if it is truly a survival issue then they don't object.
CoffinCornerX 2 years ago
Yea but the point i was trying to get across is these guys were adding the inuit seal hunting into the overall seal hunt. The Luxury hunt i say go fuck thereselves. Ban those products. But dont ban other hard earned fishing products or add the Inuit seal kills to the luxury kills to further there agenda. If they didnt do those two things i would support them like i do in their shark campaign
72Canadian72 2 years ago
For accurate numbers on annual harp seal kills I rely on the European Food Safety Authorities report of 2007. These are strictly divided into various hunts. Aboriginal/White. Off the top of my head they look something like this.
2006: 324,000
2007: 234,000
2008: 218,000
2009: 60,000
Was SSCS adding Inuit subsistence numbers to their report? Huh. Can you send me a link to that? Yeah. Shark finning has decimated shark populations. Go Sea Shepherd. Kick some ass.
CoffinCornerX 2 years ago
It was a while back so no i cant send you a link but yea they added the inuit hunt to the 2008 numbers i believe. It wasnt in any report i know of but it was just on one of their pages describing the seal hunt. It ticked me off cause im a big fan of the natives and the Inuit are the strongest ones we got left

By doing so, the EU has saved millions of seals from a horrible fate.
swampcat1 2 years ago
that good because now we will select boycotts of EU Products mainly manufactured goods like AIRBUS Airlines . Canada Buys Twice the amount of goods from the EU then the EU from Canada and what you do buy is Raw materials that are then turned into finished goods. We will cripple you

No dreaming here. That seal hunters' ship your heroes disabled in 2008 capsized, killing 4 people on board. The sealers, on the other hand, are not murders. They've killed seals but not people. Oh, but don't worry, I see that changing one of these days.
ArrowHead83 2 years ago
You see ArrowHead (you should change that to ButtHead) you're really showing your ignorance now. Those four sealers died by going out in an unsuitable boat and being towed by an incompetent Canadian Coast Guard. The DFO ordered the Coast Guard cutter to help the stuck seal boat. The CCG then tried to pull the seal boat out of the ice, while the sealers were onboard. Due to DFO & CCG incompetence, they towed the boat over a chunk of ice, flipped it, and plunged 4 Canadian citizens to their death.

REPORT: Canadian Coast Guard Kills 4 Seal Hunters

Seal meat contains Mercury. Eating seal meat which contains Mercury lowers IQ, stunts intelligence, and obviously BranVam as well as Sealers have ingested it and now have brain tissue bathed in Methyl mercury waste.

Stop pointing fingers from your suburban city home.
jjsmuggler 3 years ago
Suburban city home? I live on an island actually.
If life is so hard on these remote islands, move!

BrittanyPage 3 years ago

Still, it's stupid they tried to cover it up.
xhandbasketx 3 years ago
xhandbasketx - if you were to input 'Farley Mowat' into Wikipedia you would read:
'The R/V Farley Mowat is the flagship of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society's fleet, and is a long-range, ice-class, heavy-duty conservation ship. Originally built as a Norwegian fisheries research and enforcement vessel'.
So, YES, the Farley Mowat certainly is rated for these conditions.
If the Coastguard wanted to warn the Farley Mowat off, all they had to do was use their RADIO!
swampcat1 3 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
See that's the problem I was having. Glancing is too risky a tactic.
xhandbasketx 3 years ago
The Farley is registered as a private yacht.
As already stated, it was outside the 12 mile Canadian territorial waters and, as such, is permitted free passage under international maritime law.
For this reason there was no justification to either ram or board and arrest anyone.
swampcat1 3 years ago
The Sea Shepherd's ship, Farley Mowat is an ICE-CLASS, heavy-duty, long-range, enforcement vessel.
It has a 1-inch thick riveted, welded steel hull which was built to withstand the pounding of ocean ice.
The Sea Shepherd vessel has a proven success record on voyages in both the far North Arctic & the Southern Antarctic ice fields. It has passed through the Panama canal multiple times as well as navigating the infamous storm-haunted North Sea. It's the seal boats that are ill-equipped.

BranVam 3 years ago
It is the seal hunters vessels that are thin or made out of soft frail wood. The sealers boats are not rated ice-class. They are a dangerous liability to allow out there. Yet the Fisheries Dept irresponsibly urges them to go & recently over 400+ sealer vessels got either crushed, damaged or hurt in the ice & had to be rescued, costing good Canadians against the seal hunt millions in Air & Sea rescue fees(!) Another example of incompetence on the part of the Seal Hunt, the Canadian DFO & the CCG.
CoastGuardian37 3 years ago 2
FM did NOT enter the 12-mile territorial waters.
Now stop posting erroneous misinformation!

The Canadian government cod fishing, and because of this ban, it will again become sustainable. You really are delusional if you think otherwise. As well, the sea hunt is sustainable. Second, you show complete lack of understanding for the law of the sea.
