Thanks for being the first to respond to my question !
"Lonliness"; certainly a by-product of the film, due to the size and remote mountain location of the town, the cold & snow.
On the other-hand, the town's people are very friendly to each other, not lonely.
I don't think it was the intentions of Altman or Edmund Naughton: (author of the 1959 novel "McCabe"), to help anyone better understand loneliness. Maybe vulnerability; it's a neighbor to loneliness.
McCabe was not only shot in the gut, by the kid, but also shot in the back, by Butler.
In the old days, a bullet to the stomach was an almost certain death, but not an absolute. All things considered about McCabe; he would have survived if it wasn't for the difficult-to-walk-in deep snow which hampered his return to town.
And yet, as chachidog10 closly observed in the last scene, McCabe appears to be moving & alive; is it the wind or one of many of Altmans metaphors ?
Thanks a lot, beautiful movie
