The University of Valencia Philharmonic Orchestra (OFUV) played this master suite in 2010. I can't describe how impressive it was to follow them on its 2011 tour.
I've heard about a dozen or so renditions of Jupiter from different symphonies/conductors over the years, and I have to say this one is my favorite. I've never heard the middle part of this movement played with so much expression. I'll give almost all the credit to the conductor, Eiji Oue. This is his piece.
@ trikespotter - yes this is 'I vow to thee my country' which I'm having played at my Dad's funeral. He was an old soldier who sadly passed away aged 95
My Highschool's honors band played this winning 1st place in some UIL thing. We also marched this as our 2011-2012 show called Darkest before the Dawn. Youtube it ;D blows you away.
I have never heard a better version of Jupiter. The conductors facial expression completes this performance, plus the amazing dynamics. The most moving bit is obviously 3:07-4:57...... Makes me die every time. And to you 79 Dislikers ~ I hope Jupiter swallows you.
This piece of music has been brilliantly developed by the Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra with Eiji Oue as the conductor Gustav would be proud Brilliant performance indeed
Well most of the conducting work is done before a concert, really. Hard to say if a guy at the performance waving a baton is really "Doing his job" or just a "physically moving around".
I mean, unless you were there the whole time they practiced. Or an incredible conductor yourself I guess.
Yes. The composer gets it. He clearly has a passion for music, and with this composition, connects to what the composer was thinking, what it means personally to himself, and conveys this sum to others so they too can connect - can 'get it'.
79 people should be hit in the face by comets. 3:07 to 4:57 is probably the best piece of music I've ever heard, and will ever hear in my life. Goosebumps every time, and the conductor knows it also. You just don't mess with Jupiter, or Holst for that matter.
the era of Holst, Tchaikovosky, Bruckner, Elgar etc, produced some of the most modern music i've ever heard. Their music represents modernity before modernity became completely devoid of hope, before we reverted to the hi-tech dark-age in which we now live.
When you start crying to music, you suddenly give absolutely zero fucks about anything and everything. Especially music that you're directing 130 people to perform. I wouldn't criticize the conductor.
Hitherto I have always gone for the Berlin Philarmonic or Vienna ditto preferably with Herbert Von Karajan but this is truly amazing. The Osaka have got all the right notes and emphasis in all the right places. Well done, a brilliant job.
Having had my previous comments removed, for reasons unknown, I will repeat that Simon Rattle and the BSO knock this into a cocked hat. Rattle manages to portray just as much passion and power without mugging hopelessly to the audience like a hyperactive toddler desperate for attention, as Eiji Oue does here. It is completely unnecessary and hugely distracting from what is a majestic piece of music.
@K00lstorybrah Given that logic, I cannot have an opinion on anything outside my immediate sphere of experience, so I can now only comment on Rugby, Cricket and masturbating..... ;-)
All my life I wanted to express music like this and have had occasions like this. It makes you feel like you are part of something important and great and pulls you up to a higher level of being. Oue and the OPO are in that zone, yes tears always come to my eyes at 3:57 onward, and esp 3:54, Oues greatest humblist respect to this piece. His passion and fire fuel the orchestra, the sound is simply tremendous.
@Wonocva15 i agree BUT... this guy here Eiji Oue (conductor) is not really conducting (unify performers, set the tempo, execute clear preparations and beats) but he is rather just acting out a performance as if he's in a play. so in this case, he's not really a "conductor" but rather just a man who is physically expressing his emotions while the orchestra plays
He is absolutely a conductor, albeit not in the eyes of the layman. If you are part of a serious, professional orchestra, God help you if you still need a conductor to keep time in any way, shape, or form. At the professional level, removing the conductor should, in theory, have no noticeable effect on the technical ability of the orchestra. As others have stated, the conductor's purpose is in providing an interpretation of the music, which Mr. Oue does well.
@Informer3X so that being said, he is not required to be there. he is basically some dude just dancing to the music while the musicians play and ignore him
A crude interpretation. Musicians rely on him to bring out the interpretation of the music. Each individual section, be it string, brass, percussion, or what have you, as a relatively limited ability to judge their sound in relation to other sections. This is where the conductor comes in. On paper, there can be a plethora of notations, but the conductor is the final say in determining how everything sounds, from the vibrato to the crescendo.
Example: this piece, Jupiter, has a number of interpretations, usually named after the conductors. Levine's has a quicker tempo, with more lively dynamics. Rattle's is more mellow, lacking the brass highs other conductors prefer. Between these "extremes", so to speak, are Karajan, Mackerras, and Previn, to note just a few of the sampling of excellent interpretations. A smart musician always keeps an eye on the conductor.
@somerdaytrumpet He's probably quite nervous, you can't blame him. He's also just expressing feeling, all good conductors do this. Did you see Yo-Yo Ma's face when he played The Swan Solo (carnival of the animals)? That was even funnier. =D
@TheMusicdork94 Moved? Moved, you say??? I am so profoundly moved I am brought to tears! My heart and soul rejoices and glories to the sublime degree!
Okay let me just say this... Im 18... And I've fallen completely in love with this... it completely baffles me how one small...
